How Stupid Is Governor Ron Desantis?

Tried to outflank Trump on MAGA social issue outrage and fell rather flat. Hard to see him getting the nod by the powers that be next go 'round while they ride the MAGA resentment train.

Will you vote for Desantis? You know he has been a steady hand for Florida.

Depends on who he runs against and that's true of Senator or POTUS.

Last time he was up for Governor I could not vote for him due to the Disney nonsense, which in our view down here was so obviously concocted to create a social wedge issue out of thin air. BUT, I also did not vote against him. Did not vote in that particular office because the Dem was Charlie Crist and I could not vote for him in good conscience either. I just skipped that on the ballot.

Ok.

But Florida property taxes generate over $40 billion a year, for a budget of about $110 billion. Where that $40 billion going to get made up?
the state can cut spending 40 billion. Bring in DOGE and find waste and corruption.

I have always tho't the little town I live in should get rid of property taxes and implement a car tax...live in the city limits and own a car..pay $200 tax for each car owned. I have not seen the town's books but I'm guessing this would raise more money than what they are taking in on property taxes...everybody pays it...everybody pays the same...don't pay the tax car gets towed and impounded and sold if tax and applicable fees are not paid in 30 days.

Great question but there are better alternatives than taking at gunpoint an annual rent on peoples property.

As I say, I get the logic.

Any politician can decry taxes and give a good reason for it, and get applause.

But then you have to actually manage the budget.

Its about a third of the budget. I don't see DOGE having anywhere close to that kind of impact.

And we have trouble enough down here just catching people driving uninsured. Its rampant. How you are going to tax cars seems really difficult.

Yes, you're correct. The budget has to be managed, if FL can't cut the budget enough to forgo the loss of property taxes they will have to find another way to raise that revenue. Almost any other means of govt theft is better than taxing property.

when people renew registration every year pay tax at that time or car does not get registered.

For retired fixed income people, $200 is far less than what they are paying in property taxes. It's a fair tax where all pay and all pay the same.

Still it's a tax on property. People shouldn't be forced to pay a tax to keep and use property they own.

Yes I realize vehicle registration is nothing more than a tax.

true, but it's more fair than property tax, everyone pays and it's affordable. No one then can be put out of their house and onto the street.

I just seriously doubt enforceability given our poor track record as is on even more serious problems.
