How long is Pruitt’s leash ?

Year 4 is when that leash gets pretty short. Gotta be competitive with everyone on the schedule and beat some we haven't in a long time.

I think if he doesn't make a bowl next year, he's kind of teetering. Could go either way. It might depend on who he loses to next year and how the team looks in those losses. Either the trigger gets pulled November 2020, or 2021 needs to be some huge improvement (e.g., 8-4/9-3) or he's fired. I really think this "give him 5-6 years" stuff goes out the window if he's here 3 years and his best record is 5-7. Even Dooley and Butch did better than that.

I think there's zero, absolutely zero, chance he's fired after this season. Even if we go 1-11.
I agree, Fulmer has given him a second honeymoon....

If Pruitt still hasn’t made a bowl game by the 2021 season but is still recruiting decently how much longer should we give him to get it turned around I’ve heard some fans say he needs 5 to 6 seasons minimum.

I get confused on turning around time. It always seems that the new coach must go out and recruit 4 and 5 star talent in abundance in order to compete. What ever happened to winning with the weaker team? Spurrier had the weaker team on the majority of games versus Fulmer but almost always came out on top. If you don't hire the head coach because he can out smart the coach on the other sideline why pay them the big bucks, just hire the top recruiter in the country?

I just hope they wait till after the 2021 season to even think about a raise or extension. My guess is he wins 6 next year and they give him a 5 year extension with a few more mill on his buy out.

The only problem with giving him 4 or 5 years is you’ve got to either give him an extension or you basically are saying after 4 years I’m still not sold. Tough to recruit. After a coach is hired, they hold the cards. If you extend, you better be sure he is the man for the job. Otherwise, right back to large buyouts.

Tennessee was better than Florida almost every time from 92-2001? I only remember 2 times in that period that we were ranked ahead of Florida when we played? 1996, was one of them and Florida won the national title that year. Fulmer won 3 of 10 against them and they were ranked higher each of those times, and in 2001 they were an 18 point favorite against us when we won. I know he had trouble winning against them, but when looked at it in that time frame, they were considered the better team almost every year.

Remember boy butch? As long as he was a "super duper, none better, greatest of all time" recruiter, he got an extension and a raise! Now, if we have learned anything from the boy butch years, winning should be far more important than "building brick by brick- no matter how long it takes", GS/BYU type -L- should never happen again. Good news, we have some real cupcakes next year, but we have to play some of those pesky SEC teams....

Good news? Georgia State was the biggest cupcake they have faced in the last ten years, and they let them beat us. I am afraid to watch them play cupcakes.

We're not really recruiting that great. We are currently No. 23 on the composite, which is good enough for 11th out of the 14 SEC teams. Last year, I think we finished No. 12 but 7th in the SEC. We were in it for some really big names and seemed to have some momentum with several in August but then this turd of a season was laid and most of that went south. If we finish in the Top 15 again that would be amazing under the circumstances but we still won't be able to out talent a lot of the people on our schedule.

I meant on paper, if you believe recruiting rankings over the last 4-5 years. On the field, you are correct, we certainly don't perform better than 9 of our opponents.

I brought that up because I've seen many places (both here on VN and from national media types) that Tennessee is struggling because of a "lack of talent." Every time I hear that, my next thought is "Well, relative to who?" Lack of talent explains why we aren't competitive with Georgia, Alabama, and you can argue Florida.

It doesn't explain why we lost to Georgia St, BYU, have lost 5 of the last 7 to Vanderbilt, and have consistently lost to teams like South Carolina and Mizzou over the last several years. Tennessee has more talent on the field than all of those schools. I totally agree that we've lost LOS battles when we play those schools, but my question then is "Why?" We didn't lose a LOS battle with Georgia St because Georgia St's lines are more talented.

This
and I've seen on paper after attrition and portals UT was still 14 or 15 in recruiting stars/points as a whole team. 1 behind UF and also behind in no order Bama, UGA, LSU, Auburn & T A&M.
Just hard to understand how the Star system works for these 6 SEC teams, shows up on field but does not for us. Two of those teams have recent HC changes also A&M & UF.
Looking at our next 3 schedules this year was probably the easiest but things can change.

The only measuring stick during that time that favored UT was the Vols sent quite a few more players to the NFL than UF or any other team in the SEC. Where recently we have come up with goose eggs and are an after thought for the NFL.
We are un-drafted free agent U.

It amazes me how many people are so bitter they want us to lose to validate their wish for him to be fired rather than be happy if he improves greatly over the next few years.
Yeah this is the biggest issue I have with a lot of posters. They take all this so personally and almost find their self worth in how well the Vols are in a given year. It’s absolutely silly and immature. The name calling of former and present coaches is a huge indicator of that type of individual and I’ve learned to scan past most of them. Now I realize a lot of those folks aren’t really Vol fans but inevitably some are. It really wears old and CPF is not going to fire CJP this year or next (barring unforeseen non football related issues). I find myself visiting this site less and less because it never changes with the usual characters. I’ll still be there supporting the Vols win or lose. Let’s hope the winning comes soon!

Every coach should be afforded to let his first class run a cycle (4 years) bc you don’t know until he has his players for his system. At that point, all praise or criticism falls on his shoulders, no excuses. That said, if next year year is similar to this year, he’s gone after 3.

I think it is very clear.

The roster and two deep will have the overwhelming majority makeup of Pruitt's recruits by the 2020 season opener.

If he doesn't win in that year, and I am talking 8 or more games (8 wins minimum with or without a bowl win), I would 1000% fully support letting him go if there was a significant upgrade that wouldn't be a google or G5 coach that would be hired......

I think that is fair and rational logic that is shared by the decision makers.

Realistically I do think Pruitt gets 4-5 years here..... But year 3 is when you have to make moves.

So wrong and misguided. Butch had the only 8+ win seasons (in fact they were 9-win seasons) in the past decade+. He also went to three bowl games and won all three. That is why he got extended.
