How do we know Gruden could recruit at the level he would need to?

No I'm just not willing to call him our savior & see his resume for what it is. He could or couldn't be worth a damn as a college coach.

I'm willing to call him a major upgrade. As far as his résumé please address the coaching list part of the rest of my post.

You added that after. Not sure I would care for any of those. Jimmy has successful experience in college but we all know what those circumstances were.

Why are you calling him a proven winner? Never coached a college game. Who knows if he can actually recruit. Maybe he can come in & win his first year & go 2-10 in his 3rd.

President clinton at one point had never been the President of the United states either.......just saying.

Gruden might be worth a look. And if not a huge splash then who might you recommend that is currently a head coach that we could sway to come to our university?

Oh i know lets pay Les Miles $24 million or Saban, Then we will win for sure!!!!

Oh I know lets go after Larry Coker....here I got a link for you.

Man he must be the best coach alive 53-9!!!

man reality check there are no other coaches out there that would make the impact that Gruden would from day one.

I'm not lobbying for anybody I'm just saying opinions on Gruden are based on nothing but wishful thinking.

But wouldn't that be true for basically any coach "looking" for a HC job?

I mean we are looking for results from a man making $1. something million.... basically trying to turn a coal into a diamond by just sitting on it.... (dooley = coal) you get my point.

IMO we might want to go after a bigger fish than a DD.
No it doesn't guarntee a winning program quick, but we saw what happened when we went searching for the next big thing (DD) and it hasn't exactly equated into anything.

I mean at some point your track record has to speak for itself, no top 25 wins....streak ending against UK, etc... you already know this.... So why would we go out and get a basically new hire coach from say the WAC, or C-USA that has had one or two good seaons (a la) derek dooley and try to form him into something..... when we (university of tennessee) have the necessary funds to go out and get a proven guy. (well more proven than a dereck dooley).

You do think that Gruden is a more experiencd coach than Dooley right??? and on a much higher level.....pressure??? Gruden??? super bowl???

Its like saying I'm not sure if Lebron can play in college..... I mean he never has.......why should I believe he could???? 1 title = Lebron, 1 title Grunden, ahhhhh. ( LOL!! JK exaggerated comparison, no I don't think Gruden is the Lebron of the NFL coaches, I'm kidding.

but seriously he has more experience and has been on a bigger stage, I def think he is worth a shot IMO.

I won't quote all that but as your first statement goes NO. There are guys with actual college coaching experience. Wishful thinking is always a prerequisite until you see actual results.

Hi, I'm Jon Gruden, this is my super bowl ring. Funny thing about this ring, I won it by taking over a team full of someone elses players and implementing my offense. The team I coached against, my former assistant coach was coaching and he used the same west coast system, and that team was full of my players. So essentially, I was connected to putting 2 teams in the super bowl in one year. Crazy huh? What was that last coach that was in here trying to sell you?....Oh 2 BCS championships in 3years, thats cool.

So you think that dereck dooley is a better more experienced coach?

Should we allow him to continue here and if so for how long?

With his results as of now the only thing he could do worse is drop one to say a Western KY or Appliachian State.....

What would you say of his coaching performance so far at UT?

Just curious....

Will try Wade's for sure next time.

its sort of like being in a burning house and seeing and smelling the smoke, feeling the hot door, but not seeing the flames just yet.....and still sitting there and saying to your self that the house might not be on fire, I'll just sit here a while and hope I don't fall over dead.

(description of UT current situation under current staff, When do we say enough is enough?)

Thoghts......

So if not the terrible football coach and espn analyst Gruden. Who?

cause basically all I got out of your statement is that Saban is selling a better deal. So will Alabama never lose a game for the rest of time??? Dynasties come and go, (Miami 80's/90's), USC, Florida, (point we need to go get someone to try and defeat this juggernaut (Alabama).

It sounds like you think he will get 85 five stars every year...., guess we should just stop playing football. come on man, belly up to the table, lets get a good coach and get after the rest of the SEC, instead of saying oh Saban's got 2 national championships and we can't recruit against that.....no coach in the world can out recurit him............essentially what your saying.

I say BS.

Actually I'm saying that the super bowl is higher prestige than a National championship...I'm also saying that Gruden is a good coach because he had a part in putting 2 teams in the same super bowl game. Essentially I am saying that he can be one of the few people that can negatively recruit against saban. I left out one line because I thought it was kind of classless but at the end of that I originally typed..."I heard that guy went 15-17 as a pro coach before he ran back to college. I mean, if you are interested in learning how to win at every level you could play for me, or you could play for a guy who will teach you only how to win in college." To clarify I am very pro Gruden, I think that is the home run hire that is needed to give Tennessee instant credibility. Go back and re-read the beginning of that where I talk about the super bowl ring and putting 2 teams in that game, name 1 coach you know of in football history that has done that and then come back and tell me I am calling him a bad coach.

disregard my entire comment from before then. I'm totally pro Gruden as well. He will make a splash as far as a name goes.

Is a proven winner. Super bowls don't just happen by accident, if so don't we all think the bills would have won one of the four they were in??

And is so excited about football it scares me and i'm freaking love football!! Def the man for the job IMO.

oh and as for the two teams in one game, i thought you were saying that he had someone elses players...my bad totally misread that. apologies sir.

I'm not going to make this a long drawn out post but I think you'll get the idea.

#1 Can Jon Gruden Recruit in the SEC?
Gruden, just like Saban, will be the closer. If he's smart, he'll surround himself with tireless recruiters that will make the initial contact and warm them up to the idea of playing for Tennessee and Gruden. Gruden will then come in and make an in-home visit and seal the deal with them. Think a highly rated 4 star or a 5 star recruit would be excited about Gruden coming to their home on Monday night to watch some MNF with their family? I remember we were asking the same thing about Monte Kiffin (he's old, NFL coach, he can't go recruit). They used him very effectively as a closer to seal the deal with recruits that weren't completely sold just yet and many recruits were excited about him visiting them (as well as their high school coaches).

#2 Gruden's record isn't much above .500, so can he coach?
Well you can't go off of records only. In the NFL coaches are graded if they can get their teams to the playoffs. It's all about the playoffs. You must get into the playoffs to win a Superbowl. In NCAA, anything worse then a 1-2 loss season and you can kiss the college version of a Superbowl out as well as the looming playoffs so most successful college coaches have great records. Gruden has proven he could get his NFL teams to the playoffs, as well as winning Divisional titles: His teams won NFL Division Titles in 2000 (Oakland), 2001 (Oakland), 2002 (Tampa), 2005 (Tampa), and 2007 (Tampa).

One coach doesn't make a team, Saban has put together a winning formula of great recruiters, great assistant coaches, and one hell of a strength/conditioning coach (that guy is like a machine). If Gruden can put together a good group of coaches and recruiters, he'll give them (as well as the fans) that excitement and the discipline to win close games in the SEC.

What do we have to make us think this would be the case? Sure he has won a Super Bowl and been successful in the NFL. Why is it guaranteed that he would be such a great recruiter and keep up with the rest of the SEC? What is his college coaching experience outside of being a GA?

BTW, I have added a link to his coaching history here and he should have a couple of years of recruiting experience under his belt.

How do we know we won't have to answer this a 1000 over again...if we tell you?

Ainge now confirming on his show (in answer to a listeners question) that "There is a real possibility that Gruden will be offered the position and a REAL possibility he will accept it.

Not news but just saying how open and public this is becoming

Interesting, might want to post this in the Official Gruden thread so others will see it.

what kind of offense does Gruden run? And is he a 3-4 guy on defense? Somebody give me a quick summary of his coaching style.
