How do we know Gruden could recruit at the level he would need to?

You do realize TB gave up their first round picks in both 2002 and 2003 as well as their 2nd round picks in both 2002 and 2004 in order to get Gruden? Not to mention $8mil in cash. That's a lot of assets that they were without Gruden's first three years there. You'd like to think that 4 more top 2 picks plus money to spend on free agents could've changed things.

Very informative post.

What do we have to make us think this would be the case? Sure he has won a Super Bowl and been successful in the NFL. Why is it guaranteed that he would be such a great recruiter and keep up with the rest of the SEC? What is his college coaching experience outside of being a GA?

BTW, I have added a link to his coaching history here and he should have a couple of years of recruiting experience under his belt.

For one thing college QBs fall over themselves to get onto Gruden's QB Camp show.

Under Gruden, the Raiders posted consecutive 8–8 seasons in 1998 and 1999, and after being the AFC West dweller. Gruden led the Raiders to the top of the AFC West and made the playoffs two straight seasons Oakland finished 12–4 in the 2000 season, the team's most successful in a decade, and its first division title since 1990 and lost to Baltimore in the playoffs.
They finished 10–6 and won a second straight AFC West title but lost to NE after the phanton BS tuck rule play was called. Oakland has been irrelevant every since Gruden left. After compiling a 40–28 win-loss record (including playoffs) in four seasons with the Raiders, Gruden replaced the fired Tony Dungy as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002, via a high-stakes trade that included Tampa Bay's 2002 and 2003 first-round draft picks, 2002 and 2004 second-round draft picks, and $8 million in cash. He re-tooled the Offense and TB won the Super Bowl. TB lost multiple draft picks, injuries, and salary cap issues that caused the demise of TB. Knowledge is power. Listen to this guy break down schemes on MNF. If the SEC could get any better, guess what it will very soon. SEC coaches will s---- in their pants. Saban will head to the NFL more than likely. A--------- whippings are coming soon. Enjoy the f=========== ride.

Raiders went to the Super Bowl right after he left. Like I said he enjoys hearing himself talk.

So a couple rookies would have made that big of a difference? Doubt it.

So 4 top picks (usually implies better players, think we all agree that's common sense) wouldn't have helped 3-4 years down the line? That's like saying a top 5 recruiting class is pointless because they're FR. Of all the things you've argued in this thread this is by far the stupidest defense against Gruden. If he has less draft picks than others but still has to field a roster of 58 where are those guys coming from? Probably undrafted free agents. Hence a reason why they went undrafted.

I'm indifferent towards Gruden, but I'm not willing to discount the handicaps he faced in his time at TB. You clearly are.

Gruden will have to turn elite players away period. Fulmer Pass will be changed to Gruden Expressway.
So all of a sudden they are going to jump all over Gruden and not go to Bama, Florida, LSU, So Car, Oregon, Oklahoma, Michigan, OSU, FSU, and whoever else the good players go to?

But he's a good coach. To say he had 53 players with no talent in the NFL is absurd. He won his first year there. Luck maybe? Recruiting & the draft isn't close.

He can only take 25. ;) There will be plenty left to go around.
The dynamics of the SEC will change. This seven year debacle will be over soon.

Since Gruden left TB,
19-35 ouch
Facts don't lie.

Like I said you're opinions are just stupid after a couple of other posts. You just keep adding to them. Btw he was 57-55 while at Tampa. Sounds like a winner there huh? I'm sure everybody is looking at making a monumental hire with a coach barely over .500.

My argument has nothing to do with recruiting vs drafting. You've consistently said he got worse (record wise) in his career yet adamantly refuse to attribute any of that to the fact he didn't have the ability to get 2 of the top 60 collegiate players for 2 years in a row. I guess younger, better players have no impact on a teams performance. I guess having an extra $8 mil laying around to "invest" in more good players has no impact? You see how retarded that sounds and how dense you're being?

It sounds retarded to pay for a coach & use not having players as an excuse as losing especially when he wins it all the first year. You see how absolutely moronic you sound?

First of all, the players left on the table as a result of the deal to get Oakland to give him up would've had an impact, positive or negative, after his first year. Winning it all with players that wouldn't have been there anyway had no impact. Secondly, you assume there were no changes in personnel or injuries that ensued. Well let's look.

In 2003, nine starters from the Super Bowl team ended up on IR and Keyshawn Johnson was deactivated and later traded due to off field dissent with coaches and players. After the 2003 season Warren Sapp and John Lynch were both released and Keenan Mccardell refused to play unless given a new contract, he was subsequently traded. Charlie Garner was signed as a FA and went on IR after three games and never played another down in the NFL.

Sounds like a recepie for winning doesn't it? Don't let facts get in the way though. If you're going to troll come with more than your weak a$$ attempts thus far.

Gruden would be the continuation of a downward spiral. Living in Tampa for the last nine years, I have heard many counts of the behind the scenes behavior with players. He single handedly drove off tampa studs and has a low reputation among the ones that were still here. He never developed a single quarterback and only sought talent that was already identified (veterans). If you think this guys is good for TN, you're wrong. I won't argue the man knows Xs and Os. But, you better hope they find one hell of a recruiting staff and someone to interface with the kids.

He is an NFL coach in my opinion. No way will he fit in the college world. Just too many variables.

I recommend watching his interview on real sports with Gumble. The man is super competitive and talks about trying to find a competitive edge to "win" the interview. It's just the way he is wired. Still wakes up at 3:15 everyday breaking down film and studying trends in football.

I think he would apply this same work ethic and competitveness to the recruiting trail and anyone would be hard pressed to outwork him. And you don't win a Super Bowl by accident.

Win an interview? Just dumb. He likes to hear himself talk, that's the way he's wired.

An NFL head coach does not necessarily make a good college coach and vice versa! Gruden was a GA under
Johnny Majors. And that's his college coaching/recruiting experience??? Like I said earlier, if that's the best we are willing to do, let's keep Dooley!

You have some serious hate for the man. Did he bully you as a child?

He has statistically similar winning percentages (within the range of +\- .03 points) to the following nfl coaches:

Jeff fisher
Brian billick
Tom coughlin
Mike ditka
John fox
Jimmy Johnson
Chuck Knox
Marv levy
Chuck knoll
Bill parcels
Love smith
Dick vermeil
