This OP also started the "concern meter" in the Recruiting forum. Some posters are negative because they are genuine fans who are disappointed but then others go negative because they think it's fun to kick up dust on a message board.

I will give you more credit than you have earned here today. I do not believe that anyone on here is truly ignorant enough to judge a coach's recruiting ability based on the class signed after he was hired on December 8th in the first year of an early signing period following that team having a 4-8 season.

No, But I Did Expect a lot better. Figured We Would Have Gotten Walker, Young, and ITS. Along with a surprise, or 2. At This Point, I'm surprised JJ held strong

Think about it like this. Pruitt in year one has a better recruiting class than our previous coach in year one, and Pruitt can actually coach football.

Walker, Young, and ITS We're Not That Far Out Of Reach. Walker Was Thought To Be Coming. Young Was Committed. ITS loved it here. If Asking For 3 More guys and a surprise is crazy, then hand me my meds.
IDGAF who is coaching, what the previous season held. Finishing 8th/9th In recruiting, In Our conference Is Not acceptable. And You and anyone else saying it's ok, wait till next year, blah, blah, blah, is exactly what's wrong here.

Pruitt was not the 6th choice. The coaching candidates sought by the past joke of an AD should not count. Pruitt was in the top one or two contacted by Fulmer.

Outside of Dobbs, I don't remember anyone else being a contributor from Butch's first class. We had a 4 star DE from that class named Jason Carr who almost immediately quit football altogether.

Yeah, all leads to the coach and player development. I find it kinda funny that the one position with the most freedom for improvisation is the QB and we had Dobbs who could create momentum with his legs. We lost that and coaching discrepancies, that we for the most part already knew, glaringly started showing through the cracks.

More to consider regarding High School ratings and how it relates to the Vols current recruiting ranking.

Alabama 2018 champions had just over 30 players ranked
4 or 5 stars on the roster. Georgia,Oklahoma and Clemson combined had one more than Alabama. How were they competitive with Alabama then ? Certainly not the rankings. Maybe coaching or game plans ?

Also did you see on Rivals the high school rankings for the starters on the Eagles/Patriots teams ? I bet close to 50% were not over 3 stars.

Some of our posters not only haven't learned anything in the last five years, but I believe they are incapable of learning, period. The same guys that touted jones as the "greatest recruiter in the history of football, not just at UT, but in the world!!" made excuses for him, for five years. Remember when jones had "OK" years, he wasn't playing with "his recruits", the further he went along pulling the wool over the eyes of the UTAD ( and getting very well paid for it) the worse our seasons were? His followers claim, he WAS a great recruiter, he just wasn't that good of a coach!!! How will we ever know? If you label a coach as a poor recruiter-but his teams beat yours, is he really a bad recruiter, or is he just a super-duper coach?:hi:

Pruitt had 11 days to recruit before 70-75% of 4 and 5 star recruits signed.

What exactly were you expecting?

I'm more than sure Butch has never been called the greatest recruiter ever at TN. Most of Butch's recruiting classes were given too much credit for being great classes. His only top 10 finishes were when he signed 33-34 players in those classes. Those days of bringing that many in are gone. He also benefited in his best recruiting year in having a lot of legacy players. When you really look at the players in every class and not just the surface( ranking), he was an average overall recruiter. And the staff he brought in as a whole didn't help either. 2 things we know about Pruitt. He can Recruit and He can develop players. That's his reputation and he's one of the best in the country at both. The only unknown is can he handle the stress and the CEO part that comes with being the HC at a school like TN. Also, How long will it take to fully transition to being a HC and learning all the ins and outs of being the HC. He does have the advantage of seeing how Saban did it, his dad being a lifetime HC and having Fulmer to help shorten the learning curve. He's gonna make mistakes, he's gonna make bad calls at crucial times that most likely loses a game because of it. But he has a high football IQ and he eats,sleeps and breathes coaching football. Every first time HC goes through it and makes huge mistakes in the beginning. But I believe he wouldn't keep making the same ones over and over and will learn the first time. Something Butch never learned or figured out.R event example is Kirby's first year at GA. He made a few bad in game decision's that cost him a game or 2 that first season. Obviously he learned from it and now knows how to be a HC. Fully expect JP to do the exact same thing.
