Heupel Talks With Media Following Second Scrimmage

I have no idea how the Heupel era will be, but I like this guy. He seems genuine and comfortable in his own skin. And let’s be honest, we haven’t had that since Fulmer.

I think he may just be exactly what this program needs.

IMO he is without a doubt the most all around qualified guy we’ve hired in this decade plus fiasco we’ve all been living through...it’s a shame it took so many whiffs to land on a guy like him...I think there would be a lot more excitement about him and his staff if there wasn’t so much apathy and “fatigue” in our fan base right now

We literally said these same things about Pruitt before he coached his first full season.

I think this is a totally wrong way of looking at it.

You pre-judge a player who might, just might, have a lot more talent than you believe.

Then, as if that wasn't bad enough, you pre-judge a coaching staff based on your pre-judgment of the player.

You're building a house of cards. Any one place where you're wrong, and the whole house comes down.

Better way to approach it: acknowledge the potential within all the unknowns. Potential for good, potential for bad, we just don't know.

And give the guys, the players and the coaches both, a fair chance to show what they can do before judging them.
Im with you on this. How tf do we know who is really good or bad until we see the 1st game?? Its a new system that presents new oppourtunity for all the players. Who knows, the new staff might actually know how to use the talent we have. Heupel's QB coaching resume gives me confidence in whatever QB that trotts out there. We should all expect to see guys we havent even heard of earn PT. A clean slate does wonders for competition. Ive heard the names of Dayne, Garland, & Joseph alot this spring. 2 of those guys would have been afterthoughts with the last staff. I will say that the new staff sounds alot more exicted about what they have seen this offseason then any point in Pruitt's era.

If Maurer is not an SEC Qb but is out in front of the competition with the other two Qb’s, does that mean we do not have SEC level talent at Qb?
I want to know wtf is a SEC level talent QB?? I know diehard SEC fans that couldnt name 10 starting Qb's in the league without research. Matt Carroll didnt look like an NCAA QB his 1st 2yrs, then all of a sudden gets a QB guru at HC, now he will go into 2021 as the top returning QB in the league.

Id take 3 td and 2ints over 0 tds...completed passes are nice but do no good if your not scoring
You really can’t make that call in a vacuum. I’d rather have the ball than give it up by turnover. While there may not have been any td passes, did we move the ball consistently down field, ultimately leading to a running td? That’s far more preferable, in my view than throwing 3 td and 2 interceptions.

4 years we haven't had more then 2 TDs passes in a game...maybe we are just in shock..this offense will be very different then before
Our passing game is one of the worst in the nation. So if we pass for say...2800 yards and 30 TD, it will be one the most improved in the nation. That should get us some recruits.

I fear some of your expectations are a little too high. What are we looking for? All SEC or just improvement at the quarterback position? If we’re looking for all SEC we’re never gonna get it this year and will be disappointed without a doubt. If we’re looking for improvement, Then three touchdowns and two interceptions is a drastic improvement from what we’ve had. Completed passes and no scoring is no different than we’ve seen the past 4 years and we couldn’t wait to move on.

What you gotta take into consideration is the fact that the one throwing 3 tds and 2 ints WILL IMPROVE with experience. How a qb plays today is NOT an indicator of how successful he’ll be in the future. Let’s not forget, he’s only got 4 starts under his belt and even less opportunities to truly succeed. In terms of experience, he’s still a freshman learning the speed of the game. Give an aggressive qb time in an aggressive system and watch him get better as time goes by. It’s not a stretch by any means to think a qb with little experience that’s throwing 3 tds and 2 ints will improve to a 4 td 1 int qb by the time he’s in his second year.

I think this is exactly right. And no one can be blamed for being apathetic, at this point. The fans have done their part. There isn’t another fanbase in America that would have stuck around like we have through this.

If he's the QB, we MAY beat Vandy. The thunderchickens becomes a toss up game, and we lose to UK. 1 SEC win if he's back there. He's not an SEC talent level QB, period. If Heupel puts him there, we'll find out Heupel is not a SEC level coach IMO.

I have no idea who Heupel will select as our starting QB, but from what I have seen out of Maurer is he has that intangible trait called Moxie.

Bailey seems to be a tactician on the field, which is a definite asset to have at QB.

I don’t know enough about Hooker right now to categorize his skill set. However, it doesn’t bode well that he didn’t complete a single pass in the last scrimmage, but apparently he can motor when he needs to.

The good news is we have a very good ex-QB as head coach evaluating these guys.

Ask @Remy . He is the one stating Maurer is not an Sec Qb.

Someone posted a few days ago that on the NC campaign Heupel QB'd he had 30 TD's and 15 INT's, I mean just for sense of what may be tolerable to Coach.
Achieved in his second and final season at Oklahoma with his second OC in the second season of the Bob Stoops era. In retrospect, it’s beyond interesting that Stoops coached up John Blake’s players and Heupel delivered him a championship when Stoops recruited even greater talent in later seasons but not even 3 Heisman winning QBs and a generational RB could duplicate Heupel’s achievement.

A lot of posters on this board, declared Dobbs as a non-SEC level QB after his freshman season.

Who cares what "we" say??
Heupel has an overall winning record as a HC, and proven offensive producer.

Don't even try to compare the two. Because there is none...

I'm not comparing the coaches. I'm just saying we've been here before. We'll see how everyone's feeling about our coach by December.

Mauer will start because he’s the best throwing on the run...He’ll be ok if he learns not to do 180’s when he’s trying to do 360’s!

Him being a huge part of a NC his freshman season makes me want to say yes.
But couldn’t hit a bull in the ass with a palm leaf fan. Let them finish their career to see if they’re an sec caliber qb

He was an SEC QB. An Elite one.
The term "SEC" caliber is dumb, period.
