Hendrix opens up about transfer

Have always been a firm believer that practice should be harder than a game and you'd better be able to concentrate and execute when your opponent is trash talking, commenting about mother's heritage, etc.

Practice is where you learn to put the crap (out of anyone's mouth) out of mind and focus on executing your assignment.

Hard A$$ Coaches

Papa Bear Halis(sp)
Bear Bryant
Mike Ditka
Vince Lombardy
Barry Switzer
Nick Saban

all the good ones were hard a$$es , same with the players! I want the players that growl at the coach that "dog cusses"them and then goes and makes a play! Helm is homesick and has said nothing (Wolf) Scott knows he's been recruited over (Kamara) Hendricks is the only one with his feelings hurt (Barnett/Butcher). Sorry he didn't enjoy his time on the hill, I looked forward to seeing him develop. Best for him to decide now then after 2-3 years as a backup. Wish him well and hope Butch continues to give them hell! GO VOLS

I grew up playing for old school coaches my whole life and thought I had heard it all. That was until I went to college and had a coaching staff that primarily from up north (mostly PA). These guys took foul language and belittlement to new heights. It was a shock at first. and physically they pushed me beyond what I thought my limits were. This was how we were treated on the field. Off the field, they would do anything for us and talked to us in a completely different manor. College football is tough on any level. They are trying to develop boys into men. Life is tough and nobody is going to coddle you whole life. This is a matter of soft kids. Everyone is not mentally ready for big boy football. Just like when many move out on their own they are not ready for the real world, real life. Their is no blame to be put on the coaches here. No, everyone doesn't respond to this style of coaching same, but that goes for anything in life. Some kids are ready to "man up", and some aren't. I think this is definitely the case with Helm and Hendrix. Scott on the other hand has more to do with not wanting to sit behind Hurd and Kamara. I can't argue with wanting to play sooner rather than not having a legitimate chance to start until 2017. But this happens at every college across the country. If they all hadn't been 4* recruits no one would really care.

Maybe it was "updated" when Hendrix realized he didn't have his release. Or maybe that was what Hendrix was talking about in his tweet when he said don't believe everything you read.

Plausible either way. His HS coach was involved with the story as well and it wouldn't be shocked to learn that he did everything possible to have that remark removed.

The legend of Ferguson the Swashbuckler never dies on VolNation:cool2:

Just like the legend of Jim Bob Cooter. That boy could climb through a window like none other!

If only Phil had mentored him for four years..could been the next Uncle Rico..er Peyton..er Jim Bob?

These kids come out of school and everyone is kissing their butt. They go to a competitive program and are surprised when they aren't treated the same. You have to earn your place among the elite. Some people just aren't "coachable" and rebel against it. It won't affect any major thing. It happens at every school, every year.

and you are on the other extreme...

Prove it. When things have not been good or their results have been questionable, I've said so. When they've done things well, I've praised them.

That's about as balanced as I can be.

You probably missed it so here are a few things I think they have done well, very well, or elite: Overall recruiting, offseason development, QB development, alumni/fan/former player relations, discipline off the field, discipline on the field (minimal mistakes with young players), overall strength and conditioning, motivation, secondary improvements, media relations, and... if you really need more I'll come up with them.

Things that are questionable or not good: game day coaching/playcalling, OL play/coaching/development, DL recruiting/retention, RB depth development, and overall WR play. Those are the major ones I can think of.

I know many of you do not believe that ANYTHING should be questionable much less "not good"... but that seems pretty reasonable and balanced to me.

There is a difference between questioning some things, and constantly questioning all things. You act as though you seem to have all the answers.

That seems like a BS statement. I think you knew that when you typed it.

Absolutely UNTRUE. The rub and conflict comes because so many refuse to question ANYTHING. So when I praise the staff... some don't notice and none are "offended". But when I criticize them, the mob attacks and we end up with lots of posts.

I don't think I have enough info to have many answers. You can look through my posts and there have been only a few times where I've said "I think they should...."

I DO have enough info to have some questions though... and for many that's just way out of bounds.

You seem to be a reasonable guy most of the time. So take a look at some of the posts in this very thread. Some posters just absolutely cannot ask themselves "Does Hendrix's complaints have any merit?" For too many it MUST be because of some flaw HE has... because the staff just can't bear any blame.

So when I differ with those types of people, I am accused of being too critical of the coaches for simply saying something isn't good and suggesting that part of the problem could be with the coaches.

You guys are idiots and I say that in an affectionate way. Not everyone fits in with the culture, here. Some of that is on the player that can't handle mental adversity, some of that is on the coaches for pushing too hard at times. It happens and is not exclusive to Butch Jones or UT. Do you honestly think that coaches like Saban, Spurrier, etc pamper players? Wish the kids the best of luck and don't freaking panic like a bunch of morons every time a kid isn't happy about the situation he is in.

Try hanging around and reading for awhile. I wish it was hyperbole... but for many it isn't. Any suggestion of fault for the coaches is met with the wrath of the mob.

In the abstract, they'll claim that they know the staff isn't perfect. But when it comes to concrete, respectful, objective criticism... they can't stomach any.
