Helton back to USC?

It's not likely with Clay on the hot seat, but should it happen, I can see them tapping Will Friend as OC, moving Weinke to QB coach, and elevating Montario Hardesty (currently a quality control analyst) to RB coach. Someone mentioned Osovet (also currently quality control, and something of an offense guru) as another option. It wouldn't be a total reboot.

How much OC experience does Friend have?

I’m softening my stance a little on Helton. I hope he sticks around, mainly for the reasons BOT mentioned, and to give him the chance to perform with a few better pieces to work with.

Alternatively, maybe we could hire Clay Helton as an "Analyst" for our staff if he gets fired at USC.

I've been a fan of Tyson Helton since the West Virginia game. Given the situation he inherited on O-line, he's done very well as OC. I wouldn't mind having another Helton on staff.

or.....HC brother gets fired from USC and comes to UTK as analyst ala Steve Sarkisian, etc.

You must be one of those who wants to stay in an endless cycle of rebuilding.
Just the opposite. Our offense is ranked 113th in the country. This is unacceptable by any standard and any excuse. The defense is headed in the right direction and we have momentum. I dont want to see it fall apart because of the "stability" of sucking.

With the HC brother taking away Tee’s play calling any chance he comes after his brother to come back and make him the official OC?
Sure hope not. I think Helton is doing a very good job, especially lately, with the offense and play calling. Plus, we need the continuity that he would provide by being here the next 2-3 years or so. JG and the rest of the guys don’t need a new guy coming in next year and changing things up yet again.

To the Helton haters let us take a moment to actually THINK this through...

1...Helton, as OC, is seriously limited by what our players can and can not do.

2...Most of the time our TE's must stay in and help block so that take out all plays to use our TE's to catch the ball.

3...Do I really need to mention how bad our O line has been most of this season?

4...Just because of the O line woes that removes all long pass plays because JG doesn't have time for the WR's to run longer routes so throw out all those pass plays.

It's a total guess on my part but when Helton, Osovet and Will Friend sat down and put together our entire playbook for the O I seriously doubt if we can even use 50% of the plays they designed.

Every OC in the country is limited to the plays they can call based on what their team is able to execute well.

IMO it would be sad and a HUGE loss if we were to lose Helton as our OC and QB coach.

Anyone that seriously wants our beloved Vols to keep learning and getting better had better hope and pray that we can keep this coaching staff together for as many years as possible.

5 weeks ago Helton struggles to coach his way out of paper bag seemed to be the general opinion here.
Fast forward to present day and there is a thought that he could dart back to USC.

5 weeks ago this Saturday was the Auburn game, so I don’t think your timing is quite correct, seeing as how the offensive plan that day was very, very good. Although I understand your point in calling out the fanbase’s incredibly fickle nature. It’s truly something to behold.

Personally, I’ve not been one, at any point this season, to come out against Helton and suggest he needs to go. Like all the other coaches, especially Pruitt, he’s had to deal with a completely “broken” team, only he’s had it worse than anybody else because of the complete and utter incompetence of the soft OL. Not sure what you can confidently call if you’re an OC knowing you have that OL blocking, especially as a relatively inexperienced OC and playcaller like Helton. He’s been predictable at times for sure, but I suspect some of that is Pruitt trying to dictate that he “establish an identity” for the offense, even if the offense isn’t really suited for it.....primarily because of the awful OL, so he’s back to square one again, which is the bad OL.

Bottom line, I sure hope he’s back for the players’ sake next year. They need the continuity that it would provide. We’ve seen, at times/several times, what the offense can be with some execution from the OL and it’s good, even really good. Last thing we need is a new OC and what has been a really confused, slow to learn OL group having to start over next year in a new system. Not to mention that JG and the other skill players don’t need a 3rd or 4th OC in their 3rd or 4th years here.

Was just a thought I had. I think he’s done a good job and is growing. Hope he stays.
Agree, and think you could say that about alot of our assistants. We win 2 sec games and folks worried about Pruitt going to Bama, Helton going to USC. If we win enough, we're for sure going to lose some assistants...but we haven't, so they won't...at least for this year, unless Pruitt chases them off. Pruitt put together this staff pretty thoroughly and quickly, so I'd imagine he's got a few others on his list, and do agree that a guy like CCW has potential in the future.

Yes we consider it....That would explain 40th or 50th or maybe even 60th in the country. There is absolutely no reason for an OC with an offense full of 4, 5 and high 3 star players to be ranked 113th....ever. Not strength of schedule, not butch, not injuries, lack of stability, or "system players". D is in the exact same position and is ranked around 43 I believe. Helton has been exposed and is a glaring weakness on this staff. We will never be a championship team with him as oc.

And it has no effect if Pruitt doesn’t agree with message board think tankers...he’s been pretty consistent on that angle.
It would be hard to get rid of any of our position coaches no matter how the next two games turn out. It's year one with all new systems for the team. Next year we should see a huge improvement.

More likely that big brother comes to UT looking for a role on our staff

edit: and I say we find a spot for him & TEE

Tyson is in a better spot than USC, so I don't know why he would. USC will be scrambling for new coaches within 2 years. Pruitt is here until Alabama comes knocking.

Considering his brother won't be there next year, I doubt it.

And even if he is. Your ass is on fire before the season even starts, so you are gonna go straight nepotism and rehire your brother? Yeah, they won't like that.

Not saying he isn't qualified. But still, not a good look for big Helton.
