So I just finished the first book - I thought the series was pretty close until the battle at the end. Also, not sure why they made Tyrion's participation in the battle so inept in the series when it didn't go down that way in the book.
Also not sure why they changed Ned getting injured by his horse to one of Lannister's men doing it to him.
Finally, the book was more grim - Ned's experience in the dungeon, Arya's life after the overthrow of the hand, etc.
I will say, the character playing Tyrion seems to have nailed the sarcastic personality in the book. Likewise, good casting for Joffrey, Baelish and the Varys.
I think the difference in age was due to the fact that there was so much sex and nudity by characters that were young.I've heard the ages of characters in the books are quite different from those in the show too. But I think the casting for pretty much everybody was great.
Side note: there's obviously quite a few Song of Ice and Fire readers in this thread. I have chosen not to read the books. I want the full effect of the surprises in the show so please no spoilers on this thread.
The treatment of that battle and the change they made in Tyrion's role in it is one of my few complaints about the HBO series. So I just finished the first book - I thought the series was pretty close until the battle at the end.
