HBO's "Game of Thrones"

So I just finished the first book - I thought the series was pretty close until the battle at the end. Also, not sure why they made Tyrion's participation in the battle so inept in the series when it didn't go down that way in the book.

Also not sure why they changed Ned getting injured by his horse to one of Lannister's men doing it to him.

Finally, the book was more grim - Ned's experience in the dungeon, Arya's life after the overthrow of the hand, etc.

I will say, the character playing Tyrion seems to have nailed the sarcastic personality in the book. Likewise, good casting for Joffrey, Baelish and the Varys.

I've heard the ages of characters in the books are quite different from those in the show too. But I think the casting for pretty much everybody was great.

Side note: there's obviously quite a few Song of Ice and Fire readers in this thread. I have chosen not to read the books. I want the full effect of the surprises in the show so please no spoilers on this thread.

I think the difference in age was due to the fact that there was so much sex and nudity by characters that were young.

I think Daenerys was 13 or 14 when she wed Khal Drogo in the book.

The treatment of that battle and the change they made in Tyrion's role in it is one of my few complaints about the HBO series.

Who is with me?!!!

I'm pretty sure the reasoning for Tyrion getting knocked out during the battle is because they didn't have a large enough budget to show it. This season won't have that problem from what I've heard.

The other change with Ned's injury just seems better for tv.

First episode:

I anticipate it being very easy to keep up with now that I have a good foundation. Season 1 they're like, "here's 25 characters with weird names...good luck keeping up." Now that you know them, adding new characters here and there isn't confusing.

the first episode was pretty good. Setting stuff up mostly. I'd like to have seen more of Danearys? and her situation with the dragons. That was like 8 minutes of the whole episode. And I'm liking how people are apparently turning on the Lannisters and their incestuous ways. And Joffery needs to get b**** slapped, like soon.

Good episode.

I will say that I went back and watched the last 2 episodes this weekend after I'd finished the book and it is remarkably close to the book and as was mentioned above, I clearly missed a lot in my first viewing.
