Gus Malzahn

It would be nice to think outside the box and stop targeting retreads. Why would another team's failure be Tennessee's success ?! Malzahn is a good coordinator. What did he win without Cam ?! Is the standard 7-8 wins ?! If so, sure, go get him.

Nah, the guy is no better than Butch Jones. Runs only a handful of plays. Gus's offense declined once defenses picked up on his gimmicks.

Gus has to have a good run/pass QB like Fields to make his O work, as has been said by several posters on here. His tricks and smoke/mirrors works well when he has the D on its heels on what to defend. Nix, other than his dad played there, has no business running Gus offense. He must have been made to start him. Cost him his job.

If we hire Malzahn today you can make the case he’s the best coach in the SEC East. It’s to me an absolute no brainer.
I have no idea how you would make that case. Kirby Smart has beat Gus 5 of 6 since he's been there.

Dan Mullen beat them in his one opportunity last year as well.

Zero people would believe Gus is better than the 3rd best coach in the SEC East.

The limited success Gus has had in the last few years have been 100% on the defense.

If you want the team Auburn has had for the last three seasons save their fans the trouble and just go get Kevin Steele right now.

1) Make the case, not guaranteed.

2) Third best coach in the SEC is way better than what we have now. He’s won 8 games every year he’s been a coach for a full season.

3) Tennessee has to walk before they can run at this point. Getting Gus stabilizes the program and he’s accomplished a hell of a lot more than Freeze while also not getting fired for calling hookers on his work phone.

No, unless he comes cheap with a dynamic staff. Otherwise, why hire someone that just got fired? He's probably a little better than Pruitt, but not a big splash. If we can't make a homerun hire, then keep what we have until we can. We already have a bad rep in coaching circles because we have high turnover. We don't need to just "settle" and have to repeat this same nightmare in three or four year. Too much at risk.

I think he would be an upgrade from our current situation. But I kind of put him in the same category as Richt at Georgia. Great guy, good coach, just not going to win the big one for you.
What's wrong with just getting out of the gutter?

Let's not highlight the context in which I made the comparison. With that said, Gus's record doesn't scream top tier coaching, he is middle of the road. You can also argue the fact that Gus did less with more talent. JMO though.
