Gun control debate (merged)

The majority of homicide victims in the US every year are black.

The black population is around 12-13% of the total population.

The vast majority (80-90%) of all homicides are intra-racial.

How can anyone see that data and still believe the problem is the guns? Do you believe black Americans (12-13% of the population) own the majority of guns?

I seriously have no clue how anyone can look at homicide data here and gun ownership and believe there’s a correlation. Especially given that all available data seems to indicate white Americans own more guns

According to this CNN article around 48% of white men own guns vs 24% of non white.

So the demographic committing the most homicides is less likely to own a gun by 50% and yet some believe there’s a correlation here between guns and homicide?

If guns were the problem here you’d see the white homicide rate around twice that of the black rate. Instead the homicide rate is inverted in the direction of the demographic less likely to own guns by about 10x

This is true but the overall ignorance and denial on this issue in the communities is stunning.

Most just have the victim mentality and just like to blame someone else publicly for a fraction of the shootings like the police. It's why it won't get better, most will vote Democrat for the rest of their lives because they've decided they corner the market on compassion and why JC Watts termed the phrase Democrat plantation. The culture is not much further along on diversity of thought since Watts was in Congress back when I was still a Democrat.

Look closer and most move up then out of those rough neighborhoods when they have the opportunity, want better schools for their kids to learn yet keep repeating the same ole tired lines of the democrat party. Why? Because too many black politicians have too much at stake in the party. They don't have the introspection and commitment risk their salaries and power to pull a Vernon Jones. Then many others actually believe the stuff they've been indoctrinated to say.

What that suggests is that while the share of gun owners in the US is getting smaller overall, those who do own guns are buying more and more of them.

Love to see the depth, how is the current trend in breadth reversed?

By current trend you mean what exactly? Decline in gun ownership?
There are more total guns in America than ever before - an increasing depth of ownership.

Those guns are increasingly owned by a smaller % of citizens - a decreasing breadth of ownership.

Why does that trend matter and why would we care if were reversed or not? I'm confused by the focus on what I see as the least relevant aspect.

People will surely stockpile if the supply gets threatened (hello rhetoric from the Left all the way to the WH) but there's been a big uptick in first time ownership as well. From CNN no less.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/06/04/us/us-gun-sales-surge/index.html

"More than 2 million of the March backgound checks were for new gun purchases, according to the National Shooting Sports Federation, the firearms industry trade group that compares FBI background check numbers with actual sales data to determine its sales figures. About 40% of buyers in early 2020 were first-time buyers, according to the foundation."

Now realize the above quote was for a finite time period and this that was published in 2021. I'm having a hard time reconciling general ownership has actually decreased of late and the sort of thing in that article.

Oh it has nothing to do with the point you are trying to make. It was a completely unrelated observation from the article.

If I can only have depth, I’ll take it. But I would prefer depth and breadth.

1 firearm in 1,000,000 American homes.

Vs

100 firearms in 10,000 American homes.

I know what I’d like to see.
