Gun control debate (merged)

Banning Assault Rifles

Herschel Walker just gave a rambling speech, with a line about "taking your rights away." I always supported Second Amendment, and I still do. I know all of the arguments for it, and I've made them in the past. I still think everything I said was reasonable and right, except for one thing. When it got a lot of children killed, it stopped being right.

So don't talk to me about taking away your rights or "the security of a free state." High capacity, semi-automatic, high powered rifles on the market do not make us more secure. Obviously, they make us less secure. If you do not believe me, ask parents of those dead children. Ask the children who survived. Ask any sensible person. Do I think police should knock on your door and take away your rifle? No, and I want to quash talk of any proposed legislation to that effect, as quickly as possible. I believe that owning high capacity magazines, i.e. over seventeen, should be illegal. But I do not think that possession of the rifles themselves should become a crime. We need to stop people who want to commit mass murder from walking out of a gun store with one of those guns, and the only way to do that is to ban their manufacture and sale. That is what I support doing.

Look-it, I've owned a few semi-automatic long guns. I enjoyed shooting them and learning about them. I used to carry an M-16 rifle as a soldier and thought I had the right to own a high powered, semi-auto rifle if I wanted as a civilian. No, I don't. I have no right to weapons of war when they are the guns of choice to commit mass murders one after the other. Will the murders continue after people are no longer able to walk out of guns stores with assault rifles? Yes, but the murders will not be nearly as bad, and police will be able to respond more quickly and effectively.

I want gun owners to understand that banning assault rifles is not the end of their gun rights, not the end of our country, and not the end of the world. I imposed a self-ban, and I'm doing just fine. I do not need one, and neither do you. I do not want one, and I don't think you should.

I don’t really give a crap about your opinion on what you think I should or shouldn’t own. Move to North Korea. Citizens cannot own guns. Have fun.

Maybe you can help me. If the problem is guns, why do white Americans own more guns but commit less homicides and are less likely to commit a mass shooting than black Americans? If the problem is the guns, shouldn’t white people have better stats?

Yet the white homicide rate is on par with Canada and the UK. How do you square that away with your view that guns are the problem?

I especially like this particular stupid ass rationalization.

Could somebody tell me the magic number of people that can be killed by a nut job murderer that’s ok? Then we could just avoid all the hand wringing… since we don’t want to focus on keeping the mentally ill from killing anybody at all.
Ted Kennedy killed one woman.

Ban Democrat Senators.

That’s why I want to live in Switzerland 🇨🇭
Where they MAKE you own a fully automatic weapon 😂
There is a good reason not even Hitler wanted to mess with those folks 😉

Well we have a military for that now.

You don’t do history much huh ? We didn’t have a military once and if it wasn’t for the free people with their own guns , you would have a British accent today . The United States is a hard target for anyone in the world to take not only because of our military but because , if you put troops on the ground here the amount of gun owners would make taking Ukraine look like a cake walk .

All of them start at zero and will not move off of that zero until the operator decides what speed he wants to drive .. same with firearms .we don’t have a gun problem .
That's such a ridiculous argument.
Look at it this way and then I think I'm done with this nonsensical tangent.
Cars must have mpg ratings posted.
Every car, by your argument, would get a rating of zero, because the car cannot drive itself. It's the driver who is getting miles per gallon and not the car. I know you see how insane your position is.
And granted, different drivers may experience different miles per gallon depending on how and where they drive, but the biggest determinant is the design of the car.

Just as we have put mpg minimums on new cars, we can easily assign maximum and minimum performance standards on the design and manufacture of guns.

If they fire more than x rounds in y seconds, then I certainly think hufflewumpkinnardles should be banned.

Ok. Ban guns that can fire many rounds quickly right? Can you give us a 100% guarantee that after said ban that no criminal will ever get access to a weapon like that? And can we ban those type of weapons for the military and police as well?

Of course I can't give you that guarantee. Criminals break every law.
The military and police need to continue to be better armed than the citizenry.

Lol. You still miss the boat. While there may be mpg minimums on cars, it’s the way the car is driven that determines that. Also you are using a ridiculous analogy. If you are not aware, there exists this thing called the internet. On the internet there are ways to turn most weapons from semi automatic to fully with some simple modifications.

Your argument is stupid. Answer me this. And to preface this, I would not want this to happen. But let’s just say an out of control gunman opened fire at some politicians. Would you and the other anti Constitution people be screaming about gun legislation? Or would you be talking about boosting security?

Because you know that any attempt to actually define something and go on the record would subject you to instant and justified ridicule? 😂
It is easy to argue non specifics.
I do it because you gun nuts are idiots when debating guns. You can't comprehend and discuss concepts without going down some irrelevant tangential rabbit hole.
The fact that there are definable rational and reasonable limitations that could be applied drives you nuts (or should I say, even nuttier).

Criminals break every law. Then your entire argument is moot. Until that guarantee can be given and assured, no person can have any say as to what someone else decides how to best defend themselves and their loved ones.

I own multiple ARs. I have thousands or rounds of ammo. My wife and I love to shoot guns. We are part of a gun club (well semi social club) that gets together on a large private property and shoots. Virtually everyone there owns what you would call “high capacity assault weapons.” Guess how many of those have ever shot and killed someone? Zero.

You continue to show your love of an Orwellian society. And that’s sad.

There will never be a federal level ban. Any and all bans must be at the State and local level. Any push for the contrary is just fear mongering and fund raising.

Also a ban on assault weapons will die in committee.

As an adult who has a comedic figure, a dullard to boot, has his introduction image you sure have little room to speak. No authority and questionable intelligence.
