Gun control debate (merged)

Beto actually went to Kent State and argued that only the government could be trusted with high powered rifles. He’s so stoned/stupid that the irony never dawned on him.
Not shocking actually. There’s clearly a lack of knowledge of history in this country. I’d be willing to bet the current people on the planet have access to more information than anyone in history but use it so damn badly. It’s sad.

It’s the system we have. The alternative would not be better for anyone. In fact it would be far worse

What alternative would be worse? A world where we abolished the Federal Election Commission and 6-7 parties got their candidate on the debate stage? A world where Thomas Massie was considered mainstream and not hated by half of his own party? There are hundreds of better alternatives to this **** show.

The United States has the 59th highest homicide rate in the world. A lot of the countries above us do not allow civilians to own firearms. So.............
Don't worry about the link - I'll provide it.
It's an interesting ranking.
There are 120 counties with a lower homicide rate than the US.
So we have the 121st lowest homicide rate in the world.
All 120 countries below us have much stricter gun regulations........so..........
There are 88 countries with a homicide rate less than half the US rate.
Look at the list. Look at who is above us and who is below us.

Banning Assault Rifles

Herschel Walker just gave a rambling speech, with a line about "taking your rights away." I always supported Second Amendment, and I still do. I know all of the arguments for it, and I've made them in the past. I still think everything I said was reasonable and right, except for one thing. When it got a lot of children killed, it stopped being right.

So don't talk to me about taking away your rights or "the security of a free state." High capacity, semi-automatic, high powered rifles on the market do not make us more secure. Obviously, they make us less secure. If you do not believe me, ask parents of those dead children. Ask the children who survived. Ask any sensible person. Do I think police should knock on your door and take away your rifle? No, and I want to quash talk of any proposed legislation to that effect, as quickly as possible. I believe that owning high capacity magazines, i.e. over seventeen, should be illegal. But I do not think that possession of the rifles themselves should become a crime. We need to stop people who want to commit mass murder from walking out of a gun store with one of those guns, and the only way to do that is to ban their manufacture and sale. That is what I support doing.

Look-it, I've owned a few semi-automatic long guns. I enjoyed shooting them and learning about them. I used to carry an M-16 rifle as a soldier and thought I had the right to own a high powered, semi-auto rifle if I wanted as a civilian. No, I don't. I have no right to weapons of war when they are the guns of choice to commit mass murders one after the other. Will the murders continue after people are no longer able to walk out of guns stores with assault rifles? Yes, but the murders will not be nearly as bad, and police will be able to respond more quickly and effectively.

I want gun owners to understand that banning assault rifles is not the end of their gun rights, not the end of our country, and not the end of the world. I imposed a self-ban, and I'm doing just fine. I do not need one, and neither do you. I do not want one, and I don't think you should.
Oh good grief 🙄 use the ALREADY EXISTING thread for Pete’s sake.

I'd bet donuts to dollars that the countries with lower homicide rates have a much more homogenous population than we do.

Some do and some don't. Same with the countries with higher homicide rates.
I provided the list. Take a couple of minutes and look at it.

I looked at the list. The countries with the highest rates seemed to be in the ones in **** hole countries or countries like ours that allow those people to freely walk across our borders. Well done Luther.

To clarify, I was under the impression that assault rifles were already nearly impossible for non-military or LE to obtain. Has something changed?

It became fashionable to lump damn near any semi-auto with furniture of a certain look into the term "assault rifle". It's a kind of newspeakish approach for demonization purposes. It segues nicely into the even more newspeakish "assault weapon" which many attribute, at least in really bringing to the fore, to a Josh Sugarmann who had this to say.

"Assault weapons' menacing looks, coupled with the public's confusion over fully automatic machine guns versus semi automatic assault weapons anything that looks like a machine gun is assumed to be a machine gun can only increase the chance of public support for restrictions on these weapons."

To their credit it's been a pretty successful campaign. There's untold numbers of people out there that genuinely believe the AR in AR-15 mean "Assault Rifle".

Why don't you just provide the definition you would like to see people use?
If you can't, or don't, then your request is overruled.

lol.....You almost got there.

Ok, I Chose to not define the term, because like unicorns, they don’t exist. It is a made up designation with no real world relevance. And if YOU are the one calling to ban something, the onus is on YOU (not me to define it).
Let’s try this….I think we should ban hufflewumpkinnardles. Do you agree? Why not?

If they fire more than x rounds in y seconds, then I certainly think hufflewumpkinnardles should be banned.

Are you and Luther rolling with the “ if it saves one life “ theory?
I'm rolling more with gun nuts are getting nuttier and are being increasingly viewed as a societal pariah.
I'm convinced nothing will be done, things will get worse, and gun nuts will use the worsening conditions as proof that their position was correct all along. (part of their nuttiness)
