My poor attempt at a point was that banned ā€œassault style weaponsā€ and magazines wonā€™t prevent criminals having them. Only the law abiding citizens will be affected

I do own one of the .223's but for anything other than target practice and killing groundhogs, It's not practical. I may need to upgrade to a .30 cal upper.

Your angle is that not enough mental checks are being done. The APA is saying these people arenā€™t doing the shooting. So what will a deeper check do?

They're not saying that, they're saying 4 in 5 of the mass killers have no prior mental health record. They did not opine on HIPAA and background checks. Could've mental health reporting prevented that one from purchasing a gun? Possible.

Dr client privacy may not apply after their death or a mass shooting. Some of those reports may not even be factual. I don't know, do you have an example?

I've seen various reports online listing the prescribed psych medications mass shooters were on but like you I have no idea if they are factual or not.

I think someone posted a chart listing them in one of the threads. Hopefully they will repost it.

The overwhelming majority may not be violent, but people who shoot up places are f*****g crazy.....period.

I think there's a distinction to be made between what some descriptions call "mass shootings" and the kind of big media events we see. I might have missed something but of the 12 US shooting I found with at least 15 dead the majority (7) had a mental health component with the Edmond, OK post office shooting debated by some. (though the incident coined the "going postal" phrase) Nobody knows what the hell the Vegas shooter had going on in the attic so that's up in the air.

You bolded it like you're shocked by that statement. Just think if there was mental health reporting to the BGC system, they would be able to make recommendations about which people are violent and shouldn't own guns.

Saying "mental illness" is a pretty broad brush. What diagnoses should we include?
