Gun control debate (merged)

To me it sounds like he shot the deer, deer went down. He approached, deer got back up and effed him up. Muzzle loaders are terrible weapons for antler ranged combat, beside being wooden clubs.
sounds like he approached a downed animal incorrectly and unprepared. Reload and then go check and be prepared for him to jump

Sidearms?

I am thinking a .44 or .45 for bear or other predators if dealing with the carcass.

I always carry a sidearm when hunting, especially if on public or someone else's land whether it's ML or bow season. Dude back home in VA had his rifle and ML with him while hunting since the seasons overlapped and the game warden popped him.

No, being a bad shot should bar you from owning one. Plus there is a reason for muzzleloader season. If he needed multiple shots he should have waited to rifle season. It's sad he didn't reload and take his gun with him when he was checking his "kill".

Cmon man, the boldened makes sense but the rest is absurd. You realize these aren't static targets, right? You realize there's generally a bigger margin of error with ML equipment in the first place, right? You realize the vast majority of people, even expert shots, aren't Francisco Scaramanga, right? He hit the deer and put it down sufficiently to approach to hand to antler combat range so he shot well enough. Again, at that point you are correct in he erred in how he approached closing the deal.

I think this varies a lot depending on exactly where one is hunting. This is for TN:

Handgun Carry General Regulations

Persons with a handgun carry permit pursuant to TCA 39-17-1351 may possess a handgun the entire year while on the premises of any TWRA refuge, public hunting area or wildlife management area, including the North and South Cherokee. Nothing in this subsection shall authorize a person to use any handgun to hunt unless such person is in full compliance with all wildlife laws, rules and regulations.

For all other Federally managed properties such as refuges and military installations (example: Oak Ridge WMA and Enterprise South Park WMA), contact that specific facility or location.

You shot at a person from distance while they were running away from you? That will likely get you in some trouble if you do hit them since they aren't a threat at that point

Depends. Was that individual returning to a vehicle that had a weapon available to use? Too many variables either way here

Not at all. You shoot someone running away and you're getting arrested. You can't shoot someone who isn't a threat just because you're mad

Detained....possibly. Being charged, again...depends on the DA office and which state you live in. As I said, a lot of variables here.

About the only obvious scenario where that could still work is if where the person is running could be considered a 3rd party defense. A person that's already adequately acted in a manner to be considered a genuine threat headed in the direction of, say, one's children could garner no small amount of leeway. (in some jurisdictions more than others obviously)

Still your point remains...posterior perforations of a person during obvious egress can lead to a lot of unwanted guano.

True story, younger cop was the one who got angry with me. I'll admit I shouldn't have done it, but like I said, had I not been awake he may have likely killed us. Me and him got into it, and was separated by the older officer. He made the young guy go sit in the car. He then told me "if it ever happens again and you do hit them, drag him to your door before you call us".

Well, the good thing is that you and your family were unharmed. That older officer is definitely speaking with experience and wisdom.

Posted a story about guns at a school. Ends as well as it could, no one hurt. Not a peep from the people looking out for lives. But the evil gun owners were the ones to like it.

Typical do what I say not what i do from them.
