Hahahaha

I don't know but I think it's is blonde hair and blue eyes. Everybody's wife will be a little more into the game...maybe?

Maybe it is because we would be raking in 4 and 5 stars like crazy. Our talent alone would have us in all ballgames. To say he couldn't coach at this level is silly. He is plenty of good enough coach.GBO!!!!

I think you can add Harbaugh to the list. Whoever had hung up to listen I hope he has his ears open. GBO!!!!!!

People really under estimate how close this actually was to happening last time, till Cheek and Hart saved the day with Butch.

Nick Saban
Steve Spurrier
Jim Harbaugh
Chip Kelly...once we hire him.:)

All of those guys came up through the college game first and ascended to a collegiate HC position, went to the NFL, and returned to college.

I think the post was more referencing guys whose experience was exclusively, or almost exclusively, in the NFL.

'Name the coaches who've retired/been fired from the pros who've come back to successfully coach CFB? I'll hand up and listen"

"Who've come back"

Jmo.

Freak shouldn't we give this a Gruden with the next Roman numeral number from last time? ..Just to stay consistent. What number was the last one before it all ended?

Love the Gruden threads! I like that no matter who we get as a coach, they will always have to live in the shadow of the legend of Gruden.

He would be a great hire IMO...Maybe he was waiting on Peyton to retire to take the job so Peyton could be OC for him..GBO We can always dream big.....

Yes. You are right. But, comparing the resumes to any of those coaches to the resume of JG is a bit absurd. All of them had extensive experience at the collegiate before going to the NFL.

Does anyone ever really think of Spurrier or Saban as an NFL coach? I'd wager that may casual fans don't know that Saban coached in the NFL.

People trying to say a NFL coach can't come out and coach college are now trying to split hairs. Bottom line it has been done, all of the guys mentioned were NFL coaches no matter how you slice it. Spurrier, Harbaugh, Carroll, Saban. They are all examples provided to his question. Now go back to splitting hairs if you must. GBO!!!!!

Well if he would take it I would gladly take the chance on Gruden all day long compared to who we have taken chances on the last 3 times. I think almost everybody thinks he could recruit, at least I hope folks aren't that naïve. At the worst we are loaded with talent at the end of the day. The NFL hired the man to do x and o's on the NFL so I think I would put my stock in him before I would mid major guys. The merchandise sales would go through the roof, the tickets sales and donations would go through the roof. If I am taking chances I take them chances over mid-majors all day long. It takes money to make money. Not saying he would come, but we are crazy to not even try, and yes there was more to it last time than some can to admit. There was some interest, at least some. GBO!!!!

I get all of that, but to be fair, he asked a question and got an answer.

I would love to find out if he would be as good as I think he would be. I told you why I thought he would. I could be wrong. We'll never know.

My sources said that Gruden is willing to be a QB coach...solid source check my stats

No to HC, no to OC.......but somehow yes to QB coach. All of the hassle, all of the recruiting, but none of the glory and none of the $

Chris Weinke needs to be the next QB coach

Well I'll say this. I in no way believe that Gruden will be our coach. I let myself get caught up in it the last time but not again. That being said I'm going to have fun with it...

He's waiting

. . . I would love to find out if he would be as good as I think he would be. . . .

So would I. I would be pretty excited if UT could some how attract him to the job. He would definitely be able to recruit in the short term for the reasons you and others have stated. He could be great. But, I think there's enough elements of risk out there as I pointed out that he might not be either.

The biggest down side, IMO, is there is no doubt that you'd have to pay him an exorbitant amount of money and offer a very pro-JG contract. So, if he did bomb, the setback would be FAR greater than any of the others we've had since the parting of ways with CPF.

Can anyone name a recruit that said "I'd go to Tennessee if Gruden was coach"?

Keep in mind the last time he had anything to do with recruits he was handing out pager numbers

I see no problem in picking up the phone and see if Gruden is interested. If that happens and Gruden says no I really hope he tells Currie to make a public announcement. One that says, while I appreciate the offer and love the Vols, I have no intention to ever coach at Tennessee in any capacity whatsoever.

Maybe that would stop all of the Grumors.

Even if this was true, he'd never want to say this publicly because it would undermine his negotiating leverage with ESPN. Same reason why Chip Kelly and most coaches never explicitly shoot down job rumors. Except for Nick Saban, who did shoot them down publicly then jumped ship from the Miami Dolphins anyway.

He won a Superbowl in his first year in TB with a roster that was mostly intact when he got there. His overall NFL HC record is 95-81 or .540. That's not awful for the NFL, but it is not exactly gang busters. Belichick is .673 overall and .739 in New England. Andy Reid is .608 overall, both having coached far more games than Gruden. Mike Tomlin is .644, having coached roughly the same number of games. In fact, there are 18 active HCs in the NFL with a higher career winning percentage than Gruden.

He has never ran a college program. He hasn't coached AT ALL at the collegiate level in 28 years. He's just going to walk in and start winning? There's more to it than X's and O's. He has to recruit. He has to run the program. He has to deal with the NCAA rules and regulations, etc.

I am not saying he can't be successful, but, IMO, he's at least as big of a risk as many of these "up and comers" that so many seem to be afraid Tennessee is going to hire.

And how did Spurrier or Saban do in the NFL? :pepper:
