Gruden?

I agree a good AD should have a list. That doesn't mean the list is all encompassing. Don't forget, the job isn't even open right now. Currently, like it or not, Butch is our coach. Who's to say when and if the job opens up, certain coaches interested in the job but not on Currie's list give a call. It's called the coaching carousel for a reason.

He won a Superbowl in his first year in TB with a roster that was mostly intact when he got there. His overall NFL HC record is 95-81 or .540. That's not awful for the NFL, but it is not exactly gang busters. Belichick is .673 overall and .739 in New England. Andy Reid is .608 overall, both having coached far more games than Gruden. Mike Tomlin is .644, having coached roughly the same number of games. In fact, there are 18 active HCs in the NFL with a higher career winning percentage than Gruden.

He has never ran a college program. He hasn't coached AT ALL at the collegiate level in 28 years. He's just going to walk in and start winning? There's more to it than X's and O's. He has to recruit. He has to run the program. He has to deal with the NCAA rules and regulations, etc.

I am not saying he can't be successful, but, IMO, he's at least as big of a risk as many of these "up and comers" that so many seem to be afraid Tennessee is going to hire.

Don't forget that the Super Bowl he went to during his first year with a team that was already "in tact" as you put it played against.... Yep- his team from the previous season, the Oakland Raiders

In all seriousness, might Jon Gruden still be interested in coaching at UT? He said in 2015 that "Tennessee is a dream job for a lot of people, me included," but that the "timing wasn’t right" back in 2012.

Jon Gruden calls Tennessee dream job, says Butch Jones is 'right guy'

Well, maybe the timing's right now. John Currie should pick up the phone and gauge Gruden's interest. It would be a legendary hiring if it happened.

Name the coaches who've retired/been fired from the pros who've come back to successfully coach CFB? I'll hand up and listen.

This should be a sticky.

It's not a problem he signed a contract about 5 years or so ago, it's still sitting in the AD's center desk drawer. We had people swearing on their children and grandchildren's lives so just pull it out, send him an email reminder with a copy of the signed contract and give him a date to report.

Nick Saban
Steve Spurrier
Jim Harbaugh
Chip Kelly...once we hire him.:)

Add Pete Carroll, Lou Holtz and June Jones to that list. Maybe Bobby Petrino as well. Butch Davis could be argued for inclusion.

Thinking Dawg didn't put much thought into that post...

Gruden would probably be a great Xs and Os coach. But he has never had to recruit, and has no obvious ties to any current college assistants. What kind of staff would he bring? What kind of classes will he bring in? How many 18 year olds see him as a great coach these days? He hasn't been on the sidelines in quite a while now. He is definitely a splash hire. But, he is a risk as well. Especially when you consider the likely obscene amount of money involved in getting him here. He is worth a call but you don't break the bank on him.

No Jim Jones please........he will make you drink the kool-aid

Gruden would be an epic hire but his job at ESPN is waaay too cushy. He loves his name being out there though....feeds off it and in fact likes to egg it all on. He gets off on everyone wanting him.

You ABSOLUTELY break the bank on him if he's the right guy. That's what Bama has done with Saban and it has paid off with monumental returns. Saban is everything at Bama. We make more revenue in football than Bama does and there is no excuse if they truly want to win NOT to break the bank on the best HC. Is it Gruden? I don't know...but whoever it is you cannot let money be an object.

He wouldn't have to try very hard at recruiting. Kids would be committing just for the sole fact that he's Jon Gruden

Kids know he knows football. Especially NFL. People would call him for a job. He has celebrity status . He will pick a staff that know their stuff. He won't gamble on newcomers. Majority might be NFL staff. His brother is currently a head coach . You don't think he has connections? Kids will eat up /buy in instantly.

Along with his X and o's prestige, I think Gruden would recruit like hell. He's adored by players and coaches on the collegiate and professional level which obviously lends itself well to recruiting high caliber players.

Having said that, I don't think he'd coach a college team. He explained why back in July:

From rockytoptalk.com

"I was very determined to be a college coach. Then I realized that if I became a college coach I would probably have you on probation within four or five weeks."

“Too many rules, man. I mean I like to work. I don’t like to be working 15 hours a week with players. The recruiting, Facebook, texting, e-mails – all that stuff. Yeah, I’d probably have you in real deep, deep trouble if I was your college coach.”
