I'll bite. Give me Gruden all day everyday! His X's and O's are superb. Also, with his connections in the football world with other coaches I have no doubt in my mind he would assemble a top notch coaching staff. Lastly, the kids might not remember him as a coach with the Raiders and Bucs but they know him from MNF and Gruden QB camps. It's wishful thinking but why not shoot for the stars!

Barry Switzer was an excellent college coach in his day :)

It feels like the time has passed where Gruden would be a realistic choice, but he's still only 54 - which is shocking to me. He could coach for at least a decade and still be reasonably aged for a head coach. Currie should at least give Gruden a call.

Supposedly Gruden would have been the coach years ago had Tennessee met his demands for control over the program and salary for assistants. Of course, I've also heard that Gruden made those demands knowing full well the administration wouldn't hire him under those conditions. I have no idea how true any of that is.

A lot of people deny that Gruden was a candidate, but official info has come out that he was. Apparently the breakdown was over staff salary as he was going to bring in a hand picked staff and they couldn't agree on that amount. FWIW. Gruden was in for $5mil. Seems cheap by today's standards.

If he came, just the residual effect of his TV career would land UT at least four or five top five classes.
The pressure wouldn't phase him. He built a super bowl at Oakland and won one at TB.

I told my wife the other day that if Gruden ever wants to get back into coaching now is the time. I think he would prefer an NFL job though. Who knows though, sometimes crazy s*** just happens. This place would go nuclear if he took the Tennessee job.:fireworks:

The NFL would afford Gruden no privileged like a college job would. His celebrity would be recruiting gold. In the NFl it could be a detriment.

Paul Finebaum just talked about it openly and directly on his show yesterday. Paul is deeply ingrained in the SEC and wouldn't just say it to say it.

while I don't think it's likely at all... and UT wouldn't pay him what he is making now... media isn't as thrilling as coaching... and the NFL has it's own set of issues right now...so if he still has the bug... it's possible he would consider coaching again one day.

Whether or not that would ever happen or even happen to be in college and at UT is unlikely... but not completely impossible either.

For the love of Pete, why does everyone think that Jon Gruden would be a homerun hire?

Gruden isn't coming, but the guy can coach. I believe everybody thinks he would be a great recruiter because every kid in America knows him and seems to be a players coach from watching him on TV

We would get the top QB recruit every year but I don't think he wants to deal with the grind of being a college coach. Who knows, he might enjoy having control over everything, but he seems pretty happy calling Monday Night Football and in a way he still does get to coach when he does his Gruden QB Camp. With how much ESPN is paying him I'm sure we would have to pony up about 10 mil/year and that's a lot to commit to a college football coach. I just don't see it happening.

This article and quote are over two years old. Had some truth then, not now.

Hypothetical question. What if when Saban decides to retire in 5 years, Gruden decides to take the Alabama job? I would lose all hope.

Every NFL job except the Patriots has been open since he left Tampa Bay and he has not taken any of them.

I'm saying if he wants to coach again now. Maybe he does want to be a college coach and is interested. He may be happy with MNF. I think he makes over 5 million a year doing those games. We could call that hotline of his on Sunday and see if he's interested.

It isn't always about the money.

Gruden hasn't coached anywhere since 08, and hasn't coached in college since 1989.

Could he recruit......probably.....and prob would do it well
could he develop QB's......well sure

Could he coach in the college level and do it well........no one knows
could his D and O philosophy do well in college now.......no one knows.......heck things in college football have changed greatly just since he stopped coaching in 08.

Gruden is not coming, if he did it certainly would be a splash "name" hire; however I'm not sure if anyone would know if it would even work out or not.

Chip
Peterson
Patterson
Shaw

Vanables
ect.

These are much better options (and a couple viable options)

Gruden is not coming. I know that. I'm just answering your question the way I see it. So I don't have to repeat it after every sentence, I'll say it now, I could be wrong on all of it. Its just how I feel.

He won a Superbowl. He didn't just take over and put the team on auto pilot. He did it.

Less than 50 men in the world have done that as a HC.

He is and has been a Football analyst for the NFL for a long time.

The NFL and College are different, but its still American Football. I think he can figure it out.

He knows a lot of people in Football. I think he could build a solid staff. To say the least.

I think his name alone would be a force in recruiting. A lot of people believe TN can recruit for itself. With Jon Gruden at the helm, I just thinks it would be crazy.

Theres probably more, but that's my main thoughts.
