Going back for Mel Tucker??

The better question is, if he was white, would the same ones trying to nitpick his NFL rankings while ignoring his great years in the NFL and college be doing the same thing?

I'll bet half these guys don't even know he's black.

Maybe not studs but young and decent. The year before 6 of the top ten tacklers 29+. They were old af. They got younger and more athletic.

they are not decent, trust me on that. younger and more athletic, sure. but also more inexperienced. the ability level was on a similar level to eachother...yet the results were much different. if you dont think fangio is a far superior d coordinator, youre sadly mistaken

We need to hire Venables immediately. Cannot let this guy go somewhere else in the SEC and beat us down on a regular basis.

You do understand there is a difference in being hired as a head coach, and being named an interim right?

You get hired off you accomplishments...

You get appointed interim based on your GM's feelings about what's left after a firing

WTF difference does it make when comparing coaching ability? The important thing is wins and losses.

You win or lose based on coaching. Peroid. Fact is your boy Schiano was a terrible NFL coach, Tucker was mediocre during a brief tenure.

The numbers don't care about a man's race.

Good thing we're not in the NFL...

And might I add the teams listed aren't exactly known for their big spending

LOL, you guys are ridiculous.

Since "good coaches make chicken salad out of chicken ****" I guess Nick Saban made chicken salad at Miami?

Belichick was a bad coach at Cleveland right?

Chip Kelly was a bad coach with Philly and San Francisco.

Dennis Green was a mediocre college coach but went to the playoffs multiple times in the NFL.

Mel Tucker must be just garbage if he stayed in the NFL for a decade and now contributes to a team in the NCAA Playoffs.

It's the fit and the situation + the players + the coaching that = wins.

This definitely would be viewed as an "out of the box" surprise hire. However the man's strength of resume coaching at the highest levels cannot be denied. Also Saban and Smart obviously hold him in high esteem and he was Kirby's top pick to head up the defense at Georgia. Vols' terribly need some recruiting moxie and high energy in the entire coaching staff. Sylvester Croom was a surprise hire a few years ago.
Sylvester Croom - Wikipedia

I would prefer this hire to Kevin Steele by far due to age and upside potential. Venables I am not sure is any better but he has done a nice job at Clemson. If Fulmer hangs his AD legacy on Mel Tucker - I think we have to respect that and for sure give the man a fair chance. Whoever comes in has some extremely serious work ahead.

If it's Tucker, then Fulmer made no effort other than to find a coach that he could control. If it doesn't end well it should be the last thing he ever has to do with this Athletic Department.

I fully agree. This has been my fear with Fulmer from day one.

So ITT it's gone from

"Mel had some monster defenses in the NFL!"
to
"Mel regularly had Top 10 defenses in the NFL!"
to
"Mel had one bad year in Chicago! All other years he was near the top!"
to
"Mel was great in the NFL! stop ignoring his results!"

(actual results and stats being posted)

"Well, good thing this isn't the NFL"
to
"Hey now! Mel didn't have the talent to play with in small market Cleveland, Jacksonville, and Chicago!"

If people want to get excited about Mel because of what he's done at UGA then that's fair. However, some are trying to pretend like he was some wunderkind in the NFL and has a long history of great DC results (when, in fact, it's literally the exact opposite and his NFL DC run was trash with the exception of 2011 in JAX)

I really hate to say anything bad about Tee Martin, but from what I know, there's a real possibility that he'd be in over his head.

But not as OC. I don't mind Tucker - solid resume his whole career so far. Better than Steele or Morris. But it's a tough sell to convince me that Tucker is a better choice than Brent Venables at this moment based on recent resume accolades. If Phil is gonna give a shot to a Coordinator for UT to be their 1st Head Coaching job, then I'd vote Venables. But both a Venables and Tucker hire likely means Tee won't be coming back as OC. Reports are that Tee would only consider accepting the Vols OC job under Les Miles or Kevin Steele. So Tucker or Venables likely rules him out. So it's a hard argument even for convincing me that a Tucker hire is more beneficial at this point in time than a Les/Tee combo. I'm still scratching my head at some of the decisions Currie AND Phil have made. But if forced to choose Tucker or Venables only.....id hafta hand the contract to Venables to feel safer for a risk on a Coordinator.

Of course you would bring this up.... SMH.

Mel Tucker would be a great hire for us. Could get a strong mix of NFL Coaches here.

Would kill to see what Offensive staff he could build.

He had top ten defenses in the NFL. He had two bad years with one of the worst rosters with the Bears. He now has a top ten defense at UGA. He is a great coach.

I see he is going to get the Tee treatment. Lie about his resume to make it look like he is incompetent. Yall cant use inexperienced so I see his record is going to get twisted.

I’m a Bears fan so I member the bad part of his resume. I also can read and watch football so I know the rest is pretty good. Pretty good shouldn’t get you the HC job at Tennessee and nowhere does it scream “great”. Is there a reason you foisted that label on him? :wink2:

Decent point. :) So you’re on board?

Totally. At this point, I prefer the coordinator route for two reasons. He'd build his team around his experience being Defense first.

Second, he gets to build a staff from scratch. I prefer that over Brohm because Brohm likely brings his entire staff, which I think is a mistake on defense.

Rather roll out with Mel Tucker. Very underrated.

I'm sorry for you and your Bears fandom. It may get better.....one day.....maybe slightly. Go Cowboys! Ha

Probably not. But then again, other than maybe Sumlin, there hasn't really been a black head coach at a high profile SEC school to even test the theory.

Yeah, I'm just thinking about any coach at any school. Inconclusive, IMO. However, given the path we're down, maybe it's an experiment worth testing and hope we get lucky,

Fulmer has no interest in controlling the coach. 🤦*♂️

The best coach available is a coach that Fulmer has "Strong Disdain" for.

At least Currie had Mike Leach on the board. This hire would be the most underwhelming in Vols history and a slap in the face to Tee Martin, John Chavis and many other former Vols who we might as well hire if we consider Tucker.

Just because it's underwhelming doesn't necessarily make it a bad hire.
