Going back for Mel Tucker??

At least Currie had Mike Leach on the board. This hire would be the most underwhelming in Vols history and a slap in the face to Tee Martin, John Chavis and many other former Vols who we might as well hire if we consider Tucker.

FYI- there has still not been proof that Currie had a deal in place with Leach to come as Davenport was never involved with any MOU or offer.

Currie clearly floated Schiano to the media to see if they would defend the hire.

No doubt he floated Leach to UT. However, there has been zero proof from UT, Currie, or Leach's end that an agreement was ever reached.

Totally. At this point, I prefer the coordinator route for two reasons. He'd build his team around his experience being Defense first.

Second, he gets to build a staff from scratch. I prefer that over Brohm because Brohm likely brings his entire staff, which I think is a mistake on defense.

Rather roll out with Mel Tucker. Very underrated.

Along with the NFL roots I’m intrigued by his Wisconsin background. Those boys know how to coach em up offensive linemen. Agree that he’s flexible and not locked in on his staff. As long as it’s HIS call on who he brings in and he’s not Fulmer’s version of a Jerry Jones puppet. Sometimes these kind of hires rise up out of nowhere and become great. We don’t usually get that outcome tho. :)

Meet Mel Tucker. My first impression....is a good one. I can see why he's so successful as a recruiter. Well spoken, genuine and not a cliche kinda guy. I'm warming to the idea of seeing this guy lead UT. Suspect this is how Fulmer is feeling, too hence another meeting/interview. This might just be our next coach.

I'll bet half these guys don't even know he's black.

I had never heard of him before today. After looking at his history I see nothing that gets me either excited or not. I would honestly have no opinion of the guy coming in. That might not be a bad thing.

I am glad Coach Fulmer is back in the leadership role. Just needs to make the hire and sit back.

I would be really curious to see what his offensive staff would look like. Have no reason to question his defensive staff.

I'm sorry for you and your Bears fandom. It may get better.....one day.....maybe slightly. Go Cowboys! Ha

I live in DFW...have for 22 years. I pull for the Cowboys and actually work as a contractor at their HQ. See Jerry and his kids every week, Nate Newton every day and fist bumped Dez last week. Yeah...Go Cowboys. :)

I'm not sure about this. this steele decision has to be fueled by his alumni status. we all know the leach/currie move was fueled by previous endeavors/pettiness. the lead candidates are currently three coordinators, not head coaches. this is a mess and i just feel like this hire is going to be let down of epic proportions...

I'm sure the loudest critics do.

Of course you would bring this up.... SMH.

Mel Tucker would be a great hire for us. Could get a strong mix of NFL Coaches here.

Would kill to see what Offensive staff he could build.

I didn't bring it up. Someone else did. Implying he was only being considered cue to race. I responded.

It's funny you felt the need to respond to me and not the one who brought race into the conversation.

that is the better question, i do agree. as one of the "nitpickers" you mentioned, i can say i absolutely would still feel the same way. i saw it up close for 2 years and i was highly unimpressed. i may have a bias of watching 2 of his worst years, but thats the only bias i have

That is fair, but there was roster he had vs the next guy.

I also think his years in Jacksonville and college trump the Bears years.

I’m a Bears fan so I member the bad part of his resume. I also can read and watch football so I know the rest is pretty good. Pretty good shouldn’t get you the HC job at Tennessee and nowhere does it scream “great”. Is there a reason you foisted that label on him? :wink2:

I think he has been "great" as a college coach and was good as an NFL coach. Since we are a college program and with his recruiting and college results I think he is a great college coach.

His teams create a lot of turnovers and have great secondary play.

I also think Venables is a great college coach. Even though he has some terrible years at OU and fans were calling for his firing. Overall he has been pretty great.

Tucker literally went he same route as Sunseri but he was good as a DC from UGA.

People need to get smarter with their Football IQ. Tucker would be a solid hire here.

we were talking about sunseri.

just saying if tucker (who was the DB coach not LB) brought the current LB coach from bama with him to tennessee...

I'll bet half these guys don't even know he's black.

Legit.

I didn't realize it til I googled him.

Also would not have known he was UGAs DC if it hadn't been attached to his name when he was first mentioned. Of course unlike you I don't get much UGA news and info.

Being black didn't ring a bell either way.

wrong. vic fangio took over the next year with the same lack of talent, even minus peppers and briggs, so you could say even less talent, and yet fangio was able to make the defense respectable again

That's exactly what I said. I said they replaced the front office and coaching staff the next year and only elevated to 20th in points. Also they added Lamar Houston, Willie Young, Eddie Goldman, Jarvis Jenkins, Pernell McPhee, Tracy Porter, Sam Acho, and got Kyle Fuller back from injury. There was a massive infusion of talent.

Fair enough. I wouldn’t call him great but respectable and seems to excel at every opportunity. No reason to think HC would be any different.

He has another Sunseri quality, their defenses set records in the negative.

they had to bring in new players....fangio plays a completely different style of defense than tucker did in the NFL. guys like houston, young, mcphee, and acho didnt fit in tuckers system. they lost guys like peppers and briggs, etc. from tuckers defense to fangios because those guys didnt fit fangios defense. the talent level was the same...just different styles

JUST LOL at the retarded idiocy of a lot of people on this board talking themselves into a "durrrr Mel Tucker would be a good hire, I would be okay with that hire, durrrr look at his resume, durrr." just STFU...seriously. What Greg Schiano accomplished at Rutgers, turning that complete TURD of a program in a TURD of a state into a winning program is MORE IMPRESSIVE than a single ******n thing Mel Tucker has EVER ACCOMPLISHED IN HIS ENTIRE LIFE, lol....but yeah, s ure, just keep talking like a bunch of retards about how Mel Tucker ONCE had a Jacksonville defense barely ranked in the statistical Top 10 one time in his life years ago......lol. AAAAND if Tucker has SUCH AN OMG IMPRESSIVE RESUME then why hasn't ANY OTHER SCHOOL EVEN BOTHERED TO INTERVIEW HIM over the course of the past 2-3 years for ANY OF THE OPENINGS< both big and small, which have come up?! Seriously, just STFU already, lol. If CURRIE was the one about to hire Tucker this board would be losing its mind "DURRR CURRIE IS AT IT AGAIN, COME ON GUYS OFF TO TWITTER TO PROTEST, TUCKER IS UNACCEPTABLE DURRR!" but now that it is Phil making the call, you retards are desperate to talk yourselves into thinking that Mel f*ucking Tucker is Buddy Ryan or Bill Belichick, lol just die already lol.

Get off VolNation Greg, let it go. We don't want you.

If Schiano is so great, why he is not getting other offers. Secondly, why has Rutgers been horrible even after making a jump to Big Ten.....
