Getting out of hand!!

The value of high school recruits is dropping as players become 1 year only assets. By the time you get a recruit capable he is out the door and the next team benefits. Boozer brothers and a few others are exceptions and the Omari Evens types are the norm. I hope as they pull players from the portal they go for full quality, if you need a big man get a 7' or bigger guy don't fill the spot with a 6'9" underweight guy who is easier to get. All guards must be 3 point capable no exception. The point guard must be able to penetrate and hit foul shots. There is no time to build lock down defensive players or find them in the portal. Plan on a little less defense and a lot more offense. 1 year then flush, if you can do better great. Hope for the best best plan for the worst.

Let other schools spend the recruiting dollars, save that money, then just turn around and rent their players with that money

Isn’t the opposite true as well? We just had one of the most dominant rebounding teams in school history.

We gotta have shooters to win a national title. Think that’s been proven time and time again

You actually need a long list of components. I think we were way further than a couple of shooters from beating Michigan. But, is anyone going to be able to put together a roster like that one next year? I think we could have managed an upset against any of the other 1 seeds.

Gillespie was a great shooter until he had so many other things put on him. He shot 40.7% his Junior year. That’s a 7% drop. So, what happens to these players when they have to grind in Barnes’ system? It reaps benefits in other areas, but shooting isn’t one of them.

So we have a lack of players with those components which created an over demand on Gillespie's skills.

You have to have complete players and several components. You also have to have an offensive system that cultivates those skills. You also can’t catch the top seed in the round of 8. Carr wasn’t a cultural fit, but there has to be some happy medium. For a guy to go from the bench and complete obscurity to a 1st round pick? Carr, even with his baggage, is better than anyone on the Vols list of transfer hopefuls. The kid at Belmont is a shooter, but I don’t see the complete skill set needed to start in the SEC.

I love how Barnes developed Okpara. Estrella flashed elite potential, but was inconsistent. I think we’re going to miss out on the fruit of that development. Sure, Michigan recruited a starting 5 from the portal, but look where those guys came from. Other top programs. UConn on the other hand was essentially devoid of portal players.

Cardale Jones former Ohio State QB football player quote
"why should we go to class, if we came here to play football"
"We aint come to play school"
"show me da money"
It is finally here Cardale, just 15 years after you aint playing school.
What Carson Beck stated he hadn't been in school in two years. Go figure.

Not just shooters but consistent scorers. Teams that win games and championships in basketball have to have them consistently making shots.

I'm curious if players jumping in the portal every season is hurting their development.

Thanks. I mistakenly thought he was visiting today.
I think the zoom calls is what most coaches and players in portal have been doing prepping for visits. Weeding out the ones they feel are only going to use the recruiting to get free getaways out of it and no interest in enrollment.

Guys, portals are a two way orifice pie hole. As long as the goes in and goes out are about equal, we can live with the outcome.
I didn't exactly FYP.
Making that part more anatomically specific just makes me feel better about the rest of your post.

Amari Evans just hit the portal and I am tired of all the year to year roster changes. NIL is ruining college sports and something needs to be done.

Maybe if we stop going to the games maybe our voices would be heard and stop this mess
Why would any real fan of the Vols and the game itself, stop going to games? Relax and accept it. We will have better players next year than we did this year.

Actual game revenue is minuscule compared to the other sources of revenue the university is getting. It might be embarrassing to the university to have an empty arena, but that’s all. The televised games would be treated like most of the bowl games. They simply wouldn’t show the stands.
