Getting out of hand!!

Was reflecting tonight and considering this money thrown around. We have 19-21 year old bench contributors leaving because they demand multiple times the money that cardiovascular surgeons make in a year. 40x what police officers or teachers make. It's ridiculous and turning me off to collegiate sports, in general.

I could see Barnes calling it quits in the next couple of years. He's adapting to today's landscape, but with the integrity he has shown toward the sport and it being about the young men this all has to be off-putting.

Be easier to just call everyone free agents each offseason and sign annual contracts. Dunno why we still pretending this is collegiate basketball.
I don’t know why collegiate basketball was ever anything else. It’s not like students were ever held to any penalty for transferring to pursue other opportunities.

Amari Evans just hit the portal and I am tired of all the year to year roster changes. NIL is ruining college sports and something needs to be done.

Maybe if we stop going to the games maybe our voices would be heard and stop this mess
I couldn't agree more. this has become absolutely ridiculous.

Unless we’re in at least the Elite 8 again, I think he’ll be done after this year. If the roster doesn’t materialize it won’t surprise me if he’s gone before the 2026-27 season begins.

I was turned off from Pro sports havent watched a complete game since before the 2000s. At least a Pro would sign a 5 year deal, now you hardly know a player and their in the portal year to year and their agent is putting feeler's out with other college teams as soon as they sign with you. Hey dudes going be playing in a arena close to your location look him over and make a offer we're interested. Hope to negotiate soon the season be over quicker than you think and he will be yours if the "Price is Right". Its a slimy sport with agents and AAU coaches looking for $$$ for steering players along with travel coaches. The slimmest ones are the best at it/ Just look at HCs in college Will Wade big A$$ offers fired but somehow rehabilitated and back, Todd Golden sex scandal and the list goes on and on these are the supposed leaders of men, think about it.

Simple solution.

Stop going to games or watch something else.

It’s not going away.
This is the reality and with Danny White continually increasing prices, it's easy to do.

It would be much easier to pull for the university and not individual players but that is damn near impossible to do. I also think it's difficult as an alum, to see athletes spurn/reject my alma mater simply for money. For them, it's like a summer job, nothing else. We have to realize they don't love UT like we do and that is the bottom line. It's apples and oranges, especially when players can leave after a single year.

I don’t like that pro sports can force a guy to re-sign against their will (franchising) and trade a guy against his will. College is ideal, minus the weird spending cap and sketchy rules enforcement. The players want to continue playing for UT, but we have to let some poorer athletics program pay them what they want so that we can afford the elite players to stay within the agreed upon revenue sharing. UT would retain all of these players if no for the unequal revenue sharing.. We don’t get to spend our surplus because other schools make less.

I don't know how it can be fixed from the "players are being compensated too much" perspective. There's a market rate for players of every skill/contribution tier at the P5 level, dictated almost entirely (revenue split not withstanding) by eagerness of schools to compete and the willingness of deep-pocketed boosters to support that competitive ambition.

Even if boosters/schools/conferences colluding to deflate that market rate were permissible, you just need one team/person to go against the grain and open up the checkbook to upend things once more and have every other "serious" program follow suit. I'm confident that the non player-oriented portion of this arms race (facilities renovations, staff build out, travel standards) will legitimately bankrupt some of the lesser-heeled athletics departments, but that won't really address the issue at top programs. Some mega boosters will get tired of funding these pursuits, but new faces will pop up to take the mantle and there will never be a complete lack of people for whom the status boost is worth a tiny fraction of income/wealth. We already see how silly an "NIL" cap is given how easily they are circumvented, so that's not even worth thinking about.

I can't see how you can put the genie back in the bottle in terms of the amount of money players are being paid, but you can absolutely stem the bleed with contracts (imagine if coaches could just leave each year without any financial penalty!) and a breakoff of ~40 schools. It's not ideal by any means, but the old days of college sports are gone forever.

Many will have trouble readjusting to life after college basketball. The precipitous drop in income will cause some to get involved in crime and drugs if they leave with no useful skillset.

Personally I refuse to celebrate career 12 point scorers in college requesting $250k per year and more when I'm not contributing to the payment.

I was ahead of this years ago when I said NIL would create locker room problems and the transfer portal has made it worse. A reasonable person has to think this is going to make an interesting 30 for 30 one day.

Lmao meanwhile I’m loving it. There’s not a single player that’s entered the portal that we can vastly upgrade at that position.
Isn’t the opposite true as well? We just had one of the most dominant rebounding teams in school history.

We have been to the Elite 8 three straight years and in those years our best players have been out of the portal. Also some of the highest attendance in the country in all sports at UT.
Football just reloaded and will most likely be better than last year.
This is not 1982 anymore, it’s just the way of the world. (Though contracts with buyouts wouldn’t be a bad idea)
Hoping you solved our QB issues......
