Fulmer statement on Warlick

"Final Four appearance" there are better odds that Rosie O'Donnell will be crowned Miss Universe.
I wouldn't bet a nickel that a Warlick-coached team could beat some midget league all-stars.

True. I think Fulmer just said that to throw ppl's mind off on what he's planning to do. They're not stupid, they know how much the school is losing from keeping holly.

If he's silent, the noise grows. If he fires her right now, he puts himself and the team in a horrible position.

He did the right thing: let the people making noise know that he is aware, and give his coach a vote of support at this point in the season. That's the right course of action publicly. As for privately, he should be asking her if there is anything she needs him to do, and otherwise he should just observe and make notes.
Couldn’t agree more.

"Our Lady Vols basketball team is a much younger squad. They’ve battled back recently from some adversity early in the SEC play, but progress is evident — a recent road win at Missouri was a great example of impressive execution on both ends of the floor in crunch time. They’ve won five of their last seven games, and I expect Coach Warlick’s team to continue to grow and gain confidence as we march toward the postseason."

Sounds like a vote of confidence to me.
This is coach speak. Fulmer remembers what it was like to be fired during the season, but do not doubt him. He is a lady vol fan and he hates what has happened to Pat's legacy. He is prepared to do the right thing at the end of the season. He is also prepared to pay the big bucks needed to get a proven coach. Now I am not sure that he will get whom he wants, but he knows that this next hire has to be a good one and he wants to get it right.

I think there are two problems here. NOONE will ever be another Pat Summit. Expectations seem to say we should just keep going just as the past has been but Holly is not Pat. Frankly, no one is Pat and the comparisons need to stop. Holly put herself in this impossible position because she LOVES Tennessee. She knew what would be said and yet she has persevered. I respect her for that. What does anyone think is going to happen to Connecticut when Geno retires????
One thing we can definitely agree on is that Holly is not Pat. We know. Did someone expect her to be? Want her to be? I didn't. But I did expect her to be a decent coach who could hold the interest of a team past midseason.

There's an urban legend that those of us who think Holly should step aside are either stuck in the Pat days and/or expecting a final four every year. And we also have blue hair and are coming towards the border in a caravan. Hell I can barely remember expecting a Sweet 16 let alone a final four. I did not expect a sorry, sad mess where everyone, fans, players and poor Holly herself, were miserably mired in underachievement.

It's also urban legend IMO that Holly was destined to fail because no mortal can possibly follow a legend. Even if you do believe that, its all the more reason she should be lovingly shown the door. Can the can't follow part just end so we can move on to the next coach, who definitely will not be burdened with following a coaching legend?

Holly Warlick's problems IMO are neither legend following nor overblown fan expectation. It's an unfortunate lack of coaching intangibles and team management skills.

I don't much care what happens at UConn post Geno, but I'll bet they don't give their legend follower the better part of a decade to diddle while the program burns.

You mean the part where he arrogantly ran the football program in the ground and then collected millions of dollars?
I would rather him collect millions than that idiot Butch Jones that we are currently paying to kiss Saban's back side. At least he didn't go smoke cigars with bama on our dime. He hung around and was supportive to UT after Lane left out of here.

You hit the nail squarely on the head with your comment: "

That paragraph was taken from a State of the AD letter where Fulmer addressed all UT sports programs and was complimentary of every one of them. It's a PR piece, and those always provide the most positive spin. This one was a general letter to fans, but UT periodically sends them to donors to make sure everybody feels good about the university. It's PR-speak-- nothing more.

The Fulmer statement about the status of Lady Vols basketball was part of a feel good press release about the whole of UT athletics. It was most likely written by an underling, read and approved by Fulmer and published under his auspices. It means nothing in regards to Holly's going or staying.

I have always felt that if you have a Coach who you think is being protected by the AD, or any coach you think should go for the good of your U, you save a step and put presser on the Press/Chancellor/CEO and members of any U Board or Advisory Board. E-mails to Fullmer I suspect are just a waste of time.

Sound like he doesn't know anything about basketball to me. How many years has she been the HC and what has she done? Every year she has singed All Americans and can't coach a lick. The reason he extended her contract is they both have been at Tennessee for long time. Friendship has gotten in the way of good judgement.

Fulmer made the decision to move on from her last year when he lowered her buy out for this season..... He won’t fire her until this season is over.

At this point I think it's pretty clear Holly isn't going anywhere unless the team misses the tournament, and even then that isn't a guarantee. For that to happen, Tennessee has to lose one of their last 2 regular season games or lose in the 1st round of the SEC tournament. Even then it's far from a guarantee that Tennessee misses the tournament since the other bubble teams are all so unpredictable, and a good conference tournament run by any team could push them into the NCAAs.

As far as SEC standings, Tennessee could finish anywhere from 5th-10th depending on the last 2 games. Assuming Tennessee doesn't suffer its worst loss of the year and is able to beat both Vandy and Ole Miss, they'll finish 8 and 8 and will be the #7 or #8 seed since they likely don't jump Missouri and can't jump Georgia. Auburn is a wildcard...if they win one more, they push Tennessee to 8th. LSU and Arkansas are long shots to finish ahead of Tennessee. If Tennessee gets the 7 or 8 seed, they'll likely face either LSU or Arkansas in the 1st round of the SEC tournament with an NCAA bid on the line. LVs should be the heavy favorite on paper but you never know what team will show up.

Get a grip folks. What did you expect him to say? "Yep, I'm firing that no good blankety-blank right after the season ends."

It is clear that Fulmer has no interest and/or viable option for a late season coaching change so of course, he is going to say supportive things at this point in the season. The real assessment and decision will come at the end of the season.

Really, it is not that complicated. Public statements like these are always calculated ones and not the direct expression of actual plans that are going on behind the scenes.

so...why even make a statement to begin with?

Coach Fulmer needs to put the health and future of the Tennessee women's basketball program over his friendship with Holly Warlick and make a coaching change at the end of the season

Seriously, he made a statement thinking he could use it to as a support and drive people's mind not to pay attention to his plans. That man is not stupid, his boss knows what's going on, entire administrator knows what's going on and if he doesn't fix it his job maybe on the line too. TN boosters are the most powerful one trust!
