Former players post ad supporting Fulmer

Fulmer is going to have to look himself in the mirror at some point and ask himself if this is really how he wants to go out.

What pisses me off about this ad is it's a built in excuse. If UT gets beat by Arkansas then Hamilton can say, "Look at all the Fulmer supporters. We can't get rid of him. My hands are tied."

Both Fulmer and Hamilton come out looking good (or bad depending on your point of view)

The timing is everything.

It takes more than a couple hundred former players to fill the stadium...........

Yea I don't think the article affects Hamilton's decision at all.

Fulmer wins the East he isn't getting fired.
If he doesn't win it there is plenty of reason to see why he should be fired.

Thoughts of a Noob:

1 .This article is an indication of a legitimate effort to replace Fulmer and this must have been known in advance by MH and CPF. While they didn’t sanction it they probably were aware of it and could have killed it. It’s of interest to me that they didn’t and places special importance to winning the AR game. If we lose to ARKY it could now be very ugly…and especially if another loss to KY or V'bilt follows.

2. The timing of this letter is interesting. The only outstanding game the Vols played was GA and it was at a critical time, when there was a high fear-factor with serious discussion for letting Fulmer go. (CPF’s reaction following the GA win validated this to me.) Most felt it was a motivating factor in the teams’ performance in that win. Is this letter intended to have the same motivational effect going into the ARKY game (another critical game)? Problem is---it looks to backfire and create a real firestorm…should TN lose.

2. I agree that this letter is an act of desperation and not good for the program.

Correct on all counts.

Very good points. Welcome to the board. :hi:

Here is the pdf file. Glad to see that most of my favorites were not on the list! One of you engineers or math people get some percentages from us. How many people on the list actually played under CPF while he was a head coach? Looks like those that did are in the minority.

Looks like it came from the Tennessee Letterman's association active roster list. So it came from whoever the president is at this time and his staff and not nessesarly the players themselves.

Must be a mighty big mirror!:)

Is it me or does his head appear to be shrinking?

ROCK ON PHIL!

The last line in the letter states that it would wrong if the "University" lost CPF.
Just a thought, but could it be a letter that is asking him to stay in the front office if he chooses to step down, or is asked to step down?
I, as a long time fan, want CPF to be a "part" of Vol Football as long as he is alive, he has certainly earned that. But, just maybe, the veterans are letting him know that it is OK to step down.

Don't you think printing that many names without permission would be a little hazardous to his health?

Look at it this way, or at least i do. We are not gonna get anyone any better to come in here next year. When we do get someone they are not gonna be near as good of a recruiter as CPF. If you look at the full body of work he ain't that damn bad! We have struggled at times but alot of that is on the players. He can't make them tackle someone.

No, CPF can't make the players tackle someone but he sure can teach them how or better yet bench the ones who can't tackle and put in those who can.
:good!:

Douglas was one of nearly 200 former players who signed an open letter this week to Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton expressing their support for Fulmer. It was the brainchild of David Moon, who played under Fulmer on the offensive line in the 1980s and is now the president of an investment management firm in Knoxville. Among the players who signed the letter, which appeared in Friday's editions as an advertisement of the Knoxville News-Sentinel, were Peyton Manning, Bill Bates, Jason Witten, Dale Jones, Albert Haynesworth and Todd Kelly.

Guess the culprit is known.

Re the letter, I would bet it began when Pennington wrote the article quoting other former players and regarding the math on the potential number of signers, you made a bad assumption when you began to count in 1982, the first name on the list and many others (more than 50) are from a time prior to that year.

true orange, Johnny Rodriguez's goat could do just as good a job at playcalling and the members of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity at Western Kentucky say it's one heck of a recruiter. Plus, it works for hay.

if you really stop and ponder this ad/letter it's kind of embarrassing.

For all of us.....this matter would have been much better left alone. Who knows, CPF could win out and all this would have been totally unnecessary. They have brought the issue back to the forefront, and have given the those in the blogosphere reason to continue their efforts. Apparently those efforts are not in vain.

Come to think of it, I am sure some of this was a response to the crowd at Neyland last Saturday.

it reeks of desperation and is there anything more unappealing than a desperate girl? or in this case coach? You know the type Im talking about, the one that will go home with anyone because she just wants to feel loved..well, Phil, you can thank your former players because you've offically become that girl.

I agree. It's a nice gesture I guess, but I think it was unnecessary.

Not only was it unnecessary, it adds a great deal of legitimacy to the efforts of CPF's detractors. The only thing more damning would be the "vote of confidence" from the AD.
