Former Player's Opinion on Current Program

Here's a concept: that's the point I've been making the entire time. We have no decent upper classmen. Why is that? Because no one recruited any. Nice job making my point.

Exactly ... Jr/Sr Leadership is needed to mentor the young'uns; coach em up; and keep them from getting freaked out when something bad happens on the field.

No, it's called being realistic. We held them to their lowest output of the year with a limited roster. I'm sure you predicted the score in he prediction thread. How many points did you predict Uga to score.

i dont do that... i use to but everytime i did we would lose.. lol..but dont forget, their stud running back was out a good bit too..

well if you blitz once in a while, you just might get to the quaterback and hurry him, instead if letting him pick our defense apart

Don't know if you were at the game where you could see the whole field, but part of the reason that it looked like we never blitzed is that most of the time when we did bring an extra pass rusher it got picked up with ease or it got nullified by UGA moving Murray around.

Teague and Lanier was beat all night on the long post patterns, just lucky they didn't connect on more of them.

Agree, we miss JJ bad and our defensive team speed is just short of atrocious.

nope, i wasnt at the game... wanted to be there, believe me.. so no i didnt see the extra guy get picked up... oh yeah, and if murray was on in the first half that 20 point might of been worse..

Can you still call them blitzes if no one ever gets in the backfield? What do you call it when you are too slow to ever chase anyone down?

I think that's referred to as a harsh reality. Our lack of team speed on defense is hard to watch.

According to the NCAA website...

Eligibility Breakdown: 44 Freshmen, 38 Sophomores, 19 Juniors, 13 Seniors

Freak really needs to embed this on the masthead at the top of every VN page for the rest of the year.

I can't say I'm thrilled with everything I've seen from the coaches, but this is an incredibly young team. Everyone who's compared this to the situations that Saban and Meyer took over is a bonehead.

Part of the reason he wasn't "on" was that he was on the move, and he was having to move some of the time due to pressure, however modest its effect may have been.

Every time he threw long Saturday night his receivers were running wide open, but he was only able to hit one of them. We really are thin at DB. No Janzen Jackson sure does hurt alot of the time.

oh, i know it does.. believe me. im not down on the players at all.. not even dooley. just his coordinators..

Everybody always says that. The problem with exotic blitzes is you have to play coverage in behind them. Did you notice what we looked like trying to play man coverage with no help Saturday night? We were losing guys in space all over the place.

A blitz by definition is a calculated risk that you'll either sack the QB or force him into making a poor decision and throw in just a few seconds....like the one Murray made that hit Vereen in the side before he got called for PI...if he'd only have turned around it would have been an INT...Other possibilities would have been to rush only 2 or 3 and play zone with 8 or 9 guys...like Penn State did to Testaverde a long time ago--but that was with a real DC....

ANYTHING but allowing the QB to stand back there a bomb away on an overmatched secondary...:salute:

I can't say I'm thrilled with everything I've seen from the coaches, but this is an incredibly young team.

Florida has more freshmen and sophomore starters than we do. Georgia is very close as well. The youth shows up in the 2010 class having to play more players than the 2009 class, but otherwise, our numbers are on par for the rest of the SEC. We're not that much younger compared to our competitors.

Part of our recruiting has apparently been to go with size over speed; it's not often a great strategy for a 4-3 defense in the SEC.

I would actually argue that bigger defensive linemen in this league are better than smaller, quicker guys, which is what we've had over the last few years.

Florida had top recruiting classes every year of Urban Meyer's tenure while we've been wandering in the wilderness. Georgia's been in the top 10 percent of classes as well. They're starting freshman and sophomores because they're talented, not because they're desperate. I don't think you have to be a Dooley sycophant to understand how awful the talent situation was that he inherited. There's a reason so many coaches turned down the job and we had to hire somebody from LA Tech.

I'm not even down on the coordinators. I simply do not think they have as much experience and talent to work with as more than half the teams in the SEC. We have a severe talent and experience deficit right now. There are some bright spots playing for us, such as Hunter, Bray, Rivera, Rogers, Maggitt and an out-of-position Malik Jackson. However, that is were we begin to drop off. Injuries are twice as devasting to us because of this.

And if everyone thinks that 2012 is going to be alot better, think again. There may be marginal improvement in the record and that is about it. It will at least be 2013 before we are even being realistically talked about as a contender for the East.

Exactly. Maggit is incredibly slow. However, Austin Johnson, a Failmer recruit, must run a 4.3.

Alabama won an NC with a large group of sophomores and freshmen in Saban's 2nd season. I guess someone forgot to tell him they were too young to be good. I think Urban Meyer did the same thing in his 2nd season.

Wrong and wrong. Saban lost three games last year with probably the most talented team in the country. Meyer lost four or five games Tebow's sophomore year with a very talented team. Great players make great teams. Our best players are sophomores and a transfer. The talent on the team is mainly Dooley's recruits and if he continues to build the roster as he is doing we will be very good. Experience and depth of talent is what matters.

Talent is the issue, I agree, but Dooley is the one who recruited all of the freshmen and most of the sophomores, so the talent differential in the youth is a reflection of losing recruiting battles, not youth itself.

Our team can get as big as elephants, but we need at least a few who can keep up with opposing backs and receivers.

Exactly. Their offense is clearly going to be improved next year when they lose Brantley, Rainey, and Demps. Look out. They are just like us. All of their main contributors are freshman and sophomore just like us.
