Finebaum Talking About OC Search

If Bo was hired my first question to BJ as a sports reporter is how does an NFL QB coach like Bo enhance your offense. It looks to me like Bo's experience is highly influenced by the traditional pro sets of the NFL. I have no reason to doubt that Bo is a great QB coach who might soon move up to OC. Just not in UTs system. That was a great article.

Yes. Disappointing... Butch basically said he won't be relinquishing any of his offense. It looks like more 3 & outs and no downfield passing game.

OC has to call to what can be delivered!!! We couldn't protect the passer early/mid season, so what did we have to do? Run and short pass game. Dobbs not great at passing when under pressure, and short/mid passing accuracy for Dobbs wasn't his strongest suit. OL gelled later in the season, and you saw more results downfield.

Biggest need now is for OC to be able to develop QB on a quick learning curve... OL is pretty much in place, and SHOULD be a strength. Going to miss Dobbs running ability, for sure, so need someone who can pass (do think have a couple on the roster), while also being dual threat to run close resemblance of current offense. Not so sure we need a year of experimenting with an overhaul...last time we had that, Clawson was the cause of Fulmer exit.

As productive as our offense was most of the year, it could have been even better. How many times was Malone targeted, on average, per game--4? Not nearly enough. He was under-utilized. Kamara was under-utilized early in the year. Byrd was under-utilized. At least we began to see that there were better options than plowing with Hurd 15 times a game. We're not going to have a guy like Dobbs at QB next year who can contribute so much with the run, so good play-calling and being creative is imperative. And let's keep this in mind: Dobbs was extremely durable. He ran the ball a lot and stayed healthy throughout.

He dropped a lot of key passes throughout the first half of the year.

"Former Oregon coach Mark Helfrich visited Tennessee during a bowl practice, spawning rumors he might be the next OC at UT. But Helfrich was in Nashville to visit his former Oregon quarterback, Marcus Mariota, and is not considered a candidate for the UT vacancy."

Why would he come to their practice then. What's Mariota have to do with the Vols?

Dormady should need very little development by this point. Look at what Tee Martin did his first year and what OSUs guy did three years ago. If we are landing the "right profile" of guys and have the "best staff in America" he should be able to run the offense. If he can't run the offense by now, he needs to fake an injury to grab a medical RS and go to another school like Petermb did to Pitt to end his college career. And we will be looking at a rough year because that means JG couldn't hang with Dormady and our coaches couldn't develop squat. I DO hope this is not the case and I am rooting for everyone on that staff and team, but our players should be ready to go next year. Period.

A lot of fans watch the game drunk and forget what actually happened. They just kinda remember big plays and the people on the field wearing orange. I take part in the festivities too, but before I comment on a game I make sure to rewatch it sober so I can remember the plays and what all happened.

I just heard that too. Very disappointing...

Once Hurd left the offense stepped up to what it should have been all along. You are not going to change from a read option spread offense to a pro style I formation. You have three QBs who were recruited to run the spread offense. These guys are all good and are all better passers than Dobbs was...you do not want to screw up things now that we have a good pass-run attack with Jennings, Byrd, Johnson, Callaway, Williams, Smith and Wolf at receivers and Kelly, Fils-Aime and Chandler to run the ball.our offense is fine.

34 points should have been enough to beat Vandy. Giving up 45 to them, hiw did out defense shut down Florida in the second half and then give the game away to Vandy?

I think you need to see who was playing defense for the Vols in the Florida game v. The Vanderbilt game. It was the difference between night and day.

Injuries built up.

Time of possession is the most overrated stat.

Yep, Penn State scored 28 points in about 40 seconds during the Rose Bowl. Their time of possession was terrible:ermm:, I think their OC is now on the hot seat.:)

I read the title. I read the thread. I admit I'm not very smart, but I missed it. Will some kind soul recap what PF had to say? Not that I truly care. I'm just curious. 'Tis the silly season. I love the Vols, but I read coaching search threads for pure entertainment.

I mean would Helfrich's offense be light years different? Butch is known for his coach speak so by saying not changing much could mean getting an offense similar so there are no big "jumps".

I think Griffith is completely out of touch with Tennessee. He knows nothing about what went down between Butch and Tee. Randy Sanders, maybe, but he resigned from UT after losing 3 games in a row and blamed it on the players on the field. Finebaum pretty much called out Griffith on the Randy Sanders drop on air.

Thank you for replying with this. Quite frankly I am tired of having to post the same thing over and over. Still amazing that even casual fans don't know this simple fact that actually changed the outcome of our season. Makes me wonder did they actually follow the season at all or just do a drive by....🤔🤔

Griffith seems to be one of the few locals in the media left that are trying to butter up to Jones. Been throwing a lot of puff pieces his way lately.

I think he and anyone else is completely off base bringing up Martin or Sanders.

They aren't running the Butch Brand of offense and everyone knows the Butch Brand is the best in America.

I've been listing Swain this morning. He about has me sold on promoting Larry Scott. He also mentioned how big a loss it was losing Coach Elder last year and how well he worked and knew this offense. I know he is a head coach now at a smaller school but would he possibly consider coming back as the OC. He should be a "good fit" as Butch would say allowing us to keep our current assistant coach. I would assume we could pay our OC as much or more than he is making as a head coach. If it's not coach Scott or Z, could or should Elder be a legitimate candidate?

Most that ignore it are just flat out CBJ haters. You can't argue with hate and delusion.

Randy Sanders......every time I hear his name I see him sailing the ball over Terence Cleveland's head at the Miss St game. We mountain folk can hold a grudge!
