Explosion in Boston?

That's what amazes me. Is that since this is such a popular event, how in the world were the people responsible able to plant those explosives.

It's not hard to see how at all. It's not something you'd (the average American) would expext at this type of event.

27,000 runners. All the volunteers along the route. All the family and supporters.

It's a 26.2 mile course along a major thoroughfare in a pretty large city. The roads that make up the course route are not even shut down until around midnight the night before (then, there is a huge and unsponsored midnight bike ride along the course). But, the entire 26.2 miles is not guarded. Now, maybe the finish line ought to be and it might be easy for outside spectators to make such a claim, but then this attack would have just occurred at any point along the route, which is just as crowded.

Why? That's great news.

Great news that they were found unexploded but upsetting that they were able to be placed near a high security sporting event.

^^^This. Especially considering DHS had a fairly large presence there. We've lost enough of our freedoms in the name of security as it is - how much more will we be forced to give up because of this?

I suppose so, I guess it's not as simple as it looks to me. Just so many police, security, even the national guard. I know none of that matters but just trying to think how it could have been prevented

Because so many runners have friends waiting at the line with backpacks with changes of clothes, shoes and etc....backpacks are like the Chinese at marathons....a whole hell of a lot of them

Right, but not nearly as important as the lives saved from the incompetence of the bomber.

Certainly is not what I would consider a "high-security" event. Probably will be in the future, though.

I'm not sure if this is accurate or not, but I read a report earlier that bomb sniffing dogs had been used earlier in the day. 3-5 explosive packages were planted and no suspicious activity was reported. Post 9/11, you hope something like this would never happen.

I have to disagree. As much as I hate the thought of life lost, the cost of freedom is high.

The cost of freedom is always high, but Americans have always paid it. And one path we shall never choose, and that is the path of surrender, or submission.

Pure speculation at this point.

No different than someone saying that this was perpetrated by a tea partier or Al Qaeda.
