Explosion in Boston?

it seems the US has inadvertently advanced terrorist techniques faster than they could have predicted

Solid and classy move by the Chicago Tribune:

Would have preferred the tribute if it read "We are Boston Bears, We are Boston Blackhawks, We are Boston Bulls" and whatnot. Empathize with the city, not the teams.

ANDREA MITCHELL, MSNBC: Congressman briefly, do you think that this will lead to more cameras? I know it's controversial, there are privacy issues. Boston does have a lot of cameras. European cities, led by London, have the most. Are Americans going to have to get used to more surveillance on a daily basis?

didn't see that coming

Not to Obama!

These type of bombs are just not limited to AQ;

Counterterror officials are surely well aware of these facts and studying any related leads. But it’s important to bear in mind that the ability to make these bombs is hardly unique to al Qaeda and its sympathizers. Members of at least one prominent white supremacist website have shared terror tips from Inspire, which one called “highly recommended reading.” Pressure cooker bombs are also discussed in detail on this anarchist site, which describes how to build what is “affectionately known as a HELLHOUND.”

Nor do these devices require much money or special training. As DHS put it in 2004:

Did not stop the London bombings.

And it's unlikely to prevent an attack beforehand anyways. It's still just about money

Peter King:

I hope also that members of Congress, both parties, including my own, will realize that the war against terror is not over. And it's foolhardy to be making cuts in Homeland Security, especially to cities, whose police departments need this to train and to be ready to take on terrorism.

Department of Homeland Security was concerned enough about pressure cooker bombs to issue an alert to federal and state security officials: “A technique commonly taught in Afghan terrorist training camps is the use/conversion of pressure cookers into IEDs,”

Pressure cookers have been used to hide IEDs in Afghanistan for years!

Curious, VM, why you left off the following tidbit:

I loathe her, too, but that article is just making up the claim that she says it was Boston cops. It seems like the complaint she is making is that they were doing a bomb ploy exercise that day and didn't manage to stop the bombing.

There is no support for the claim that she is saying that the cops are the suspects.

But of course the blog spouting that nonsense is amongst the most discredited in even the brief history of the internet, so no real surprise.

Why are you still asking this? Jesus Christ, drop it!

We understand that you have an unhealthy obsession with bashing Obama, but he's done nothing wrong in the handling of this tragedy.

Eggsactly. I'm not a fan of the Pres., but any criticism aimed at him over this is dumb.

It's a simple question. Why did he have two press conferences? You seemed to be worked up about this.

Just heard on the Dan patrick show that families from newtown where there and they were honoring one child for each mile.

If I ws one of these parents right now I think I would be in shellshock mode the rest of my life.

Imagine having you child killed and then a bomb goes off on the mile it was honoring your child andyou are there and see this.

It is a tragedy. If would be hard to imagine the pain the parents of the Newtown children are going through. There was also an eight year old boy killed during the bombing.

My prayers go out to the parents of Newtown and the people of Boston. We live in a sick world.

We don't live in a sick world. I hate when people say that as its a cop out.

Good people outweigh the evil. Just look at the people who went running into danger yesterday to help victims

Tragedies have occurred throughout history. This is nothing new but it's not a sick world we live in.

Good post. Unfortunately the good things are always outweighed by the bad. We tend to remember those more but maybe because they are more rare.
