Even More Obamacare Follies

Andy and Amy Mangione of Louisville, Ky. and their two boys are just the kind of people who should be helped by ObamaCare. But they recently got a nasty surprise in the mail.

"When I saw the letter when I came home from work," Andy said, describing the large red wording on the envelope from his insurance carrier, "(it said) 'your action required, benefit changes, act now.' Of course I opened it immediately."

It had stunning news. Insurance for the Mangiones and their two boys, which they bought on the individual market, was going to almost triple in 2014 --- from $333 a month to $965.

One week from today we will be able to tell exactly what the rates will be and what each of the plans pay.

which is absurd. Something like this should be spelled out so simply and clearly that even a congressman could understand it

1) The GOP have championed the mandated benefits in here, such as coverage up to age 26 for dependents. In fact, many mandated benefits in various state coverages, were proposed by Republicans.

2) I wonder if this family has bothered to apply for the Kentucky exchange? I doubt it. And when it comes back with a really good policy at a great rate, I wonder if Fox will run a follow up piece? Doubt it.

looking at the .pdf "fact sheet", I don't see much for the Mangione family to be optimistic about

I can't wait for this to be a massive success. Wether that's due to it being a working policy or when it brings about better changes to our absolutely failing system of caring for people. Wonder why so many rebubs are afraid? Because people will love it and vote democrat. The common people might finally realize what a sham our political system is.

Agreed,LG should read sjit before he posts it.

Read and watch.

He watched one episode of breaking bad and has told us all how the series finale will end.
Lmao.

He obviously practices the same way when it comes to politics.

We'll violinbham we shall see soon enough. Keep on guessing until then. I really don't care what anyone on this board thinks or what any representives from Texas has to say about it. Americans deserve better care and it's as simple as that.

How'd you know I play violin?

Americans do deserve better care - that in no way justifies crap legislation with goodies and giveaways for political allies.

We would need to compare their current plan, and what they pay for it, adjusted for premium increase into 2014, and compare that to the rate and plans available under the exchange.

From the article originally posted on this family's Kentucky plan, the problem is that their current plan appears to be incredibly bare bones. $ 333 a month for a family of four? It must have had ridiculous deductibles and copays. And according to the article was missing a lot of coverages.

So let's make sure moving forward that we are comparing apples to apples.

And indeed, according to the Ky website, for $634 a month, which is right in the middle of the two premium numbers they currently have on their old plan, they can get the silver plan from the exchange for a family of 4 making up to $80k.

I wonder what the extra $300 buys them. Based on the comments in the article, could be quite a bit.

you need to compare what they choose to have now to what they will be forced to have in the future. The fact that plans like that are being removed from the market is completely relevant

Thats basically what I pay for my family of 4. It doesnt cover pregnancy, the deductible is $2000, and normal copays

Also I thought if you liked your plan, you could keep it. Doesnt sound like it for this family.

My guess is the extra $600 covers pregnancy, which may not be needed for this family

They don't want the silver plan. Why should they have to settle for silver. They should have gold. Right? Like all the rich folks??

It is relevant, yes, but its part of the reform that we can't have people opting for coverage that omits key things just because its cheap.

If you want to suggest a proposal in which people can buy a catastrophic plan, the problem is that it does not cover the basics up front, and so what happens is they underutilize efficient basic primary care ... until it reaches the point where we taxpayers end up paying for it.

I'm a single guy and my plan, which is probably int he silver type area, is close to $600 as month. If I get sick, I go to the doctor.

But with these stripped down plans for $300 for a family of four, they are getting basically nothing and its the taxpayers that end up paying the freight. The whole point of the individual mandate is to prevent freeloading in that manner.
