ESPN/Chris Mortensen report

No, he's coaching at a school that hadn't had a losing season in 15 years when he inherited it and he's driven them to three. A school that was a consistent top 25 school when he inherited it. A school that won the ACC 5 years before he became their head coach.

And Groh has never taken a team to a BCS bowl...I don't know where you got that idea.
And he's driven it into the ground. The only reason UVA is in the bottom of the ACC is their coach.

Hmm--UVA has won 10 games once in 1989. They won 9 last year. They have had many losing years including 1-10 years in the 80s. Yes, they have been a 7-5, 6-6 team recently but they are not a powerhouse program. They are a Vandy but playing in a weaker conference. So he won 9 games last year and he blows? He may win 6 this year but it was supposed to be a rebuild year for a traditionally weak team. He is a good coach again not changing the world but a good coach.

If Hamilton doesn't get a big name, and the coach struggles next season, Hamilton will be fired.

Go 3-9 or worse and see of he still has a job after next year.

no he won't. Being an athletic director of a major university means a lot more than just a football program, no matter how strong those football traditions reign supreme. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Mike Hamilton only has one blunder as athletic director and that was last year's extension. It should also be noted that some have said that was an essential verbal agreement for reaching the SECCG. Every single other move has turned to gold. His fund raising abilities alone attest to that. For proof see all the new facilities and facility upgrades since his arrival.

There's a whole lot I don't know about, but I do know how management of sports franchises or athletic departments work. Hamilton will not be fired because a coach fails his first year here. If he is, the entire board of directors need to be canned because no half witted AD prospect or better would dare set foot on Rocky Top.

UVA had a 1-10 season in 1981. Under George Welsh (1982-2000), UVA had 2 losing seasons and 2 conference titles. They've had 3 losing seasons and zero conference titles under Groh.

I missed the Mort interview - since we're getting transcripts today (thanks from those of us who missed it),

What were the comments on Gruden?

Did he say, "flirting" as in, just stringing Tennessee and everyone else along, but that's all it would be.

OR

Did he say, "flirting" as in, "flirting with the idea / considering it".

Did he act like Gruden was really considering it, at all?

your answer... except the discussion was only about Tennessee

He has two both 5-7. The ACC is far more competitive than it was back in the day. In fact, a school who is it that gets A plus recruits was not even in the conference. They are and always will be a mid tier or below talent level team in the ACC. He has been doing well with them. If you expect more from them then you are doing something into the wind, I believe that is the saying.

you are actually a lot closer than most people would believe.

I've been reading about these "clues" for two days, but think that I've missed a few.

Could someone summarize them for everyone, so that we can take an honest stab at this - if, in fact, it's not a hoax, which many believe it to be.

I am also assuming that you will confirm the answers we provide, if correct?

Lastly, I am also assuming that you are asserting that this coach, or package of coaches, is a done deal - or that there is a greater than 85% chance that your mystery candidate actually materializes as the new coach. Is that also correct?

Give us something to do instead of argue about our respective coaching candidates.
So, let's hear the clues, please.

Edit: Don't forget the Tremors clue. It actually ties into the Yancey Thigpen clue as well.

I'd say MH will try to do a great job with this hire. All the guys on the SportsSource this morning seemed to think MH would be gone with the next coach if it isn't a successful hire.

thumbing thru the posts on this thread, a few names mentioned made me cringe......Wandstedt....yikes!!! As a serious Dolphin fan, it was obvious this guy is an uber idiot. The Big East is a crappy conference, and his teams floating near the top is luck at best. The other name mentioned as a long shot was Malzhann at Tulsa....yikes again!! He was coaching high school 3 years ago. Do we really need a looooong shot like this @ UT? My personal opinion...throw as much money as it takes to get Butch Davis. He is the only name on any list that can potentially go toe-to-toe in recruiting and X's and O's with Saban, Meyer, Richt, and others.

Well I like that we are approaching guys like Lovie. We need a big name. Kelly is not the answer. So why not approach Billick and others, maybe even some OCs or DCs in the NFL.

Why does UT need a big name? I thought they were looking for a good coach and Kelly is a good coach and so are other candidates that were mentioned. Just because someone has coached in the NFL doesn't mean they're gonna be guaranteed success in college (ala Sherman @ Texas A&M).

I have reviewed his recruiting at Cincy compared to what it was before and already know he is a disaster nothing else is necessary but that fact he is a prick certifies it.

Where did you do your research? According to their stars on Rivals, UC's recruiting has gotten BETTER under Kelly.

One upside to recruiting at UC, though, is that the Cincinnati-area is very rich in talent. But, the obvious downside is the presence of a certain Big 10 school about 100 miles to the north.

We deserve both-an NFL guy can recruit generally by his name brand recognition--If he can coach then you have a winner. Kelly has proven he is a good coach and bad recruiter in my mind not the fit here

Give Sherman time. It's his first year at a crashing program inherited from Franchione. Not exactly an ideal situation.
