It wasn’t a true derecho. There has to be a swath of wind damage that is greater than 250 miles.
It was crazy whatever it was. I was lucky to be able to go inside, because that thing literally came out of nowhere. I’ve never seen so many snapped trees in my life in the aftermath of a storm.

~Severe Weather Alert~

There is a Slight risk for strong to severe thunderstorms across areas along and south of Interstate 40. There is a marginal risk everywhere else.

Timing: This afternoon into the early evening hours. Roughly 3-7 PM is the best window.

Hazards:

Damaging winds in excess of 60 mph and large to very large hail up to Golfball size are the primary threats. An isolated tornado or 2 can’t be ruled out.

VK’s thoughts: The biggest question with this system is will there be enough forcing in the atmosphere for the storms to form this afternoon. If there is, the dynamics are there to see storms become severe very quickly. For precaution, I would recommend everyone keeping their vehicles in a garage or covered area if storms do form.

~Severe Weather Bulletin~

There is a Marginal risk for a few strong to severe thunderstorms across East TN today.

Timing: Late afternoon into the evening hours.

Hazards:

Damaging winds up to 60 mph is the primary threat. There is a very low chance for a brief isolated tornado in southeast TN.

VK’s thoughts:

I’m not expecting too much in the way of severe storms. The instability is decent, but the wind shear is weak. We do have plenty of gulf moisture though, so isolated flooding is a concern.
