Dormady v. Guarantano

Collaros had a great junior season( Jones first as head coach) then fell off pretty drastically his senior season before breaking his leg at the end of the year.

Worley kept getting trampled til he got knocked out with the shoulder injury.

I just don't see much history indicating Jones changes his offense to suit the quarterback.

Worley was a gutty player but hardly an example of how a pro-style QB works in the system, even IF his OL hadn't nearly got him murdered. Collaros fought through injuries way before his leg broke...still flourished til then. I think you're hung up on the CHANGES part (I believe I used CATER). His offense ACCOMMODATES both type QBs and emphasizes their individual strengths. There are areas that aren't being used to ACCOMMODATE Dobbs strengths and whoever succeeds him will receive the same courtesy. Basic standard procedure for any offense really.

If you put a lot of stock in the UA game, then you're doing this wrong. Scouts look at the camp leading up to the game, which wasn't exactly stacked in Jarrett's favor. He played in one of the toughest areas in the country in high school. The kid is for real.

Dormady will be hard to beat out. He has done almost everything right, smart, great arm, and has been in the offense for a full year. However, I WANT Guarantano to win it because a mobile QB is a killer to teams like Alabama, plus it takes pressure off the OL.

Our OL still needs work if we're gonna have a pocket passer. Dormady got sacked a lot in the bowl game, proving a mobile QB helps way more than many on here realize.

Dormady is and will continue to be the backup, after seeing JG in the All America game it seems clear the mental aspect of the game is where he is lacking the most. Sometimes that's hard to fix. Dormady on the other hand doesn't seem to have that issue
TIFWIW

Why are people judging JG off a All star game that doesn't mean crap.Im pretty sure he looked really good during the practice time.JG will hopefully be RS next year and Dormady will be the back up.Heck TN even wanted to RS Manning

He has about 15 offers so far so everyone is recruiting him.

Fans always want the 5 star players.

And just to clarify what I am saying about a true pro style offense.

How many offenses has Jones ran that relies on I formation with a blocking back and play action roll outs along with a short passing game including screens and flares to the RB's ?

There are a few elements of this kind of stuff in Jones' offense but I do't think anyone thinks Bill Walsh era 49ers or Holmgren era Packers when they watch the Vols play.

Honestly think Dormady would fit better in what Cameron has been trying to do at LSU than what we have seen with the Vols the last two seasons.

It's all just discussion stemming from boredom on a wet Saturday morning on my part though.

We saw the changes in the bowl game...expect WAY more of that this year...especially when Hurd is in the backfield. If that happens, designed QB runs will also drop and play action passes emphasized. Best passer emphasized there. DeBord has Butch's faith and that's his comfort zone.

There are many reasons Dobbs starts over Dormady. Mainly him being a way better qb. Dormady hasn't shown in game he can pass any better than Dobbs. He looked mediocre against NU and completed a lower percentage than Dobbs did for the year. Even though he faced only back ups.

There is a reason Dormady was the lowest rated qb we have. He isn't Josh rosen or something. Gurantano could be a Deshaun Watson tough. Similar ranking, skill-set and talent.

I have many issues with this narrative but I'll just highlight one.

Coaches love this kid's arm. He IS a better passer than Dobbs. To say he hasn't shown it in a game is like saying I'm not a good driver bc I haven't won the Daytona 500. We've both had about the same opportunity to shine.

For the record, I'd crush the Daytona 500.🏁

If scouts look at the camp prior to the game, why did JG not get a bump, he was the best QB physically, he even thought he was going to start and didn't know why that did not happen. There were perhaps extenuating circumstances, I don't know, I do know Steve and Herm can evaluate talent.

Hope you are right.

I think our best chance for next season is Dobbs staying healthy. Fewer designed runs should help to that end.

I believe part of his passing problems may have stemmed from an undisclosed injury like a sprained ankle or something else he was able to play through. Lower leg injury and not setting his feet properly may have led to some of those high passes.

Beyond that to 2017 and beyond, it's a question of Dormady being patient enough to wait another year and whether Guarantano has the ability jump him in the pecking order.

Agree...one hunnert.

Because nobody has gotten a ratings bump except on 247 (not the composite but their actual ratings). They actually have Jarrett lower than anyone else And have all season. He's the number 3 overall QB on both rivals and scout.

Even if you took the game into the equation, you still have to look at the fact that he missed the second half of the season with injury and was bound to have some rust.

I'm basing my opinion off of games and practice. What are you basing the myth of Dormady's better arm off of? If he can't look better than Dobbs against back ups or in practice why would he be a way better passer magically when he starts a real game?

Based on what? Dormady hasn't thrown better from what we saw.

He was also the lowest ranked qb on campus.

247 composite rankings
Dobbs 165 overall 4 star
S Jones 254 overall 4 star
J Jennings 167 overall 4 star
Dormady 262 overall 4 star
Gurantano 71 overall #1 DT Qb.

Dormady is the lowest rated qb we have for a reason. He is not some 5 star sure fire pro like some act. Gurantano is one of those type players though.

Do you not believe missing his entire juniors year with a shoulder injury and surgery had a negative impact on his ratings? If he had been able to play his junior year, I bet his rating would have been much higher. The lack of exposure and the uncertainty regarding his shoulder had a significant negative impact on his ratings.

Not a lot of changes and adjustments will compensate or overcome that atrocious of an offensive line.

From reports I have heard JG was very good in the practices but did not transfer to the game.

I like to think of this offense as a mixed pro-spread (Manning Style) offense the need off a running QB is beneficial but not necessary based on the strength or weakness of the o-line. As the year went on we saw less zone read as Kerbyson began to lock down Dobbs blind side. Dobbs feet are his best weapon so we saw more designed runs for him. So as far as Dormady and Guarontano goes if the o line is where it needs to be I think Dormady will get the nod on experience because he his mobile enough to make plays when protection breaks down but if the o line is sub pat still and we need the heavy run that ala Dobbs to keep the defense honest you will see JG.

The coaches say they love Dobbs arm also. They loved S Jones arm. They love Gurantano's arm. They have not once said Dormady passes better. If they have post a link. He was a lower rated player by a 100 spots than Dobbs and 200 lower than Gurantano. He was here for the spring and fall but could not even push Dobbs at all. He hasn't looked better in game against back ups. What are you basing this magical, mystical, mythical great arm on? Coaches praised all three qbs. Not once did they say Dormady is the best passer. You may THINK he is a better passer. He definitely hasn't shown it at all.

The same stuff was said when S.Jones was added to the class late. People informing others how he fit the offense better than Dormady and he would quickly overtake him to he the #2. Dormady never lost the back up job and Jones left for Colorado. Dormady with a couple years in the system and this offense will start over Guarantano. Unless he is injured Dormady will take over when Dobbs leaves and start until he graduates or leaves for the draft.

Dormady may be number 2 next year. He will be the next Peterman. A back up so the future starter can hopefully redshirt. Then he backs up JG after his redshirt season.

You're the only one with the goofy "magical, mystical, mythical great" overdone exaggeration. While you're making crap up YOU post a link where they praise ANY of our QBs arm. They do coachspeak and they don't show their hand. And get over HS rankings...they mean NOTHING. Dan Kendra was ranked higher than Peyton coming out of those ranks. He became more well known for blowing up his dorm room and made the league as a FB. Hate using Manziel as an example but he was a 3 star coming out and Texas recruited him as a DB. Finally, we had a buncha reactionary hotheads on this board declaring Dobbs a failure based on his larger sample of work as a freshman. Good for us that he proved they were full of shizz! Every freaking year! Know-it-all blowhards that know nothing. :glare:

As long as you've decided. :)

Exactly. We have heard coachspeak about all three. Some have used this as a basis to say Dormady is a great passer and a better passer than Dobbs. There is no proof to the theory though.

I think you were one if the peeps who was sure Torrance Gibson was the messiah. You were sure Jones would outlast and overtake Dormady. Forgive me if I don't take your opinion of Guarantano being far and away better than Dormady.
