Pat Summitt said it best.."You can't coach effort."I played football from the time I was six years old through high school. That’s 12-13 seasons. I’m not sure, it’s been 30 years. It’s probably about 100 games or so. Not once ever do I recall a coach “getting me ready to play.” Yes, they coach. They make every effort to prepare you for anything and everything that the other team may attempt against you. Yes, they try to motivate. But, each player on the team is responsible for their individual effort.
These guys are just getting beat, period. They’re not winning blocks, winning coverage, making plays as receivers, etc.
I suppose it has to be on the coaches, to some degree. Maybe there’s more in these player’s than they got out of them. But, you just can not deny that they get beat to the man for the most part.
Sadly, we as UT fans have had this same end result too much for the past decade. The excuses may be different, but it’s always the same. I’m not sure really what to say anymore. This truly saddens me. Other teams get better while we continue to flounder in a dark abyss. Not sure when this nightmare will ever end but I’m truly jealous of other schools and their success
Coaches never hyped me up for any game. If you have to rely on the coach to hype you up to play a sport then maybe you should find something else to do...like field hockey.I played football from the time I was six years old through high school. You need a guy who can scramble for his life until this o-line situation can be fixed. That is an absolute must. JG will never be that guy and keep getting killed and UT will keep losing until its done.Gator speaks truth. I think there's a lot of transfers coming and maybe those guys quit already on this staff. I know if I was Pruitt I would be looking for a dual threat QB ASAP (Does Mauer qualify?) Pruitt has said this will be the worst year. So let's just see. He'd better beat a down Vandy and Mizzou next year, along with make a bowl (i.e. Show progress) or his seat will be on fire going into 2020.
You’re rightI’m seeing a lot of stuff being written and I’m shaking my head.
Anyone who thought before the season that Tennessee did not have the personnel on campus to avoid getting hammered by Vanderbilt is not being truthful. I know those are fighting words, but it is what it is.
There is NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE, who thought before the year, Vandy is just too good. Tennessee’s going to lose, that’s a given. Tennessee has absolutely no chance. I just hope we don’t get killed.
No one came close to having that thought.
The team I saw today did not bother to play with any effort. Period. Point blank. End of story. Next case.
And you’re darn right, that’s on the coaches. You’ve lost two in a row to Vandy. You’re trying to get to a bowl. You’re trying to end on a good note, so that the season has a positive vibe about it. And you go out and do that.
Don’t give me the talent rationale. One of the reasons Pruitt got emotional after the Georgia game is because the team went out and laid it on the line and played hard for 4 quarters. The end result wasn’t what anyone wanted, but they busted their tails.
They were completely uninterested in this one and that’s a reflection on everybody, including the coaches. Players who care about their coaches don't do that.
I’m not a coach worshipper by any means. But I have a deeper question: WHY’D they quit? You cant put in people things God left out. Heart, determination, fight, passion, pride, work ethic. You either have them or you don’t.
Some who were at the game tonight said the players on the sideline looked disinterested and uninvolved. Where does that come from? I get it if it’s happening to a lame duck coach (ala BJ last year) but this is a new coach with new energy, new vision and new passion. We know the Freshmen aren’t quitting because he brought them in. They’re his guys! We know it wasn’t really the seniors because we didn’t have a whole lot as the ones we did have, played pretty hard all year. So who quit? I’m guessing it was the sophomores and juniors. Those who haven’t bought in to the new way of doing things. They’d rather roll over and get som free gear simply by wearing the T rather than work hard like those who’ve gone before them wearing the T. Their BJs’ boys. Butch ran a lax, come and go as you please, surface level program. Those who had the above mentioned traits, improved and those who didn’t, stayed the same or even regressed. It’s playjng out in front of us.
I think the blame lies somewhere in the middle. Pruitt has said all year tbey need to coach better. That’s actually been refreshing. But it’s hard to coach people who just don’t want to be coached. That’s what it looks like to me. It’s just sad to see guys not give a crap represent the team I love. Here’s to better seasons ahead.
This game sucked no doubt..... still doesn’t change anything..... have to flip the roster and build depth
Not saying this is totally it but how would you and your co workers feel if the one running your show says the place I was at would not have wanted any of you except maybe looked at a couple. That should have been a no quote or at least off season. You are in a situation you need as coach/leader do ever thing to make it better in the transition to your players. He just dissed sophomore through Senior classes except 2 players. Think about where you work if someone said I would have never wanted you, is that a team building tactic or an excuse for failure.
What happened to the old coaches saying, Bum Phillips he can take his'n and beat your'n or take your'n and beat his'n.

I’ll also say this. Who cares if someone said they didn’t want me at my job?? If I still have my job, then it’s up to me to prove that the person who DID hire me didn’t make a mistake. Why would I roll over, pout and get offended by that? I don’t know you champ, but I’d hope you’d do the same thing. Again, the best motivation for me personally is for someone to tell me I can’t do something. I’ll stop at nothing to prove them wrong. Unfortunately, our society of snowflakes is slowly emasculating the male species and removing all resemblance of manhood. Just my opinion.
