Does this make up for a disappointing season?

Just want to hear from all the doubters. Does this change your view on Martin's coaching philosophy?

Not going to address his coaching philosophy as I think he had some stinkers during the regular season however to address the topic thread:

"Does this make up for a disappointing season?"

I will step up (front and center) and say that in my opinion this sweet 16 appearance does in fact make up for a disappointing regular season!

I have really enjoyed watching the last three games and I am excited that the Vols will be playing Michigan in the Sweet 16. This is the way UT Basketball should be!!!!

The team is playing its best basketball of the year now! They are firing on all cylinders - J Rich and Stokes are in full on beast mode.

Go Vols!!!!

IMHO, Yes, it makes up. But it pisses me off on how much we under performed during the regular season. I was all for rehiring Bruce, but no one else. I'd rather stay with Conzo if it wasn't Bruce. I'm excited for them. Go MFBO!

Bruce is coach of the Auburn Tigers so why is he even being mentioned any further on this board? All of the Pearl discussion is now irrelevant. We should just be concerned about supporting this team and our coach (and perhaps worry about keeping this coach!).

I agree, It's time to move forward and support the Vols even if your still not sold on Martin.

Well honestly, I liked Pearl.

You need to crawl under a rock. What do you mean disappointing season?

Have you ever thought about thinking before you type?

I will speak for my own doubting. This run is great and I'm all happy for it, but as I posted elsewhere, it's not about this one year. It's about the consistency of the body of work. With two talented seniors and another talented big man, this was a year primed for Tennessee and they barely, _barely_ made it in. Barely. And then they almost lost to Iowa. Then they got a good break playing UMass (not the strongest 6 out there), and another break when Mercer beat Duke and also lost a starter. But that takes nothing away from the run, either. This is turning into a good postseason and I put that as a plus in Martin's column. But. BUT. What will happen next year when Maymon and McRae are gone? That's what I want to see. As I posted elsewhere, I think UT is too good a program to be going to the NCAA tournament once every 4 years. We've already whiffed years 1 and 2, and this year was supposed to be a great year for UT before they almost collapsed (but didn't - again, props to them for that run). But next year, when the last of "that guy's" recruits are gone, will UT still be competitive? Has UT done enough recruiting to field a good team next year and beyond? As I said, it's about consistency. That guy we don't talk about anymore went six years in a row. Every year. I think, with the facilities and money and passion UT has for basketball, they should be going dancing more often than they're not going dancing. So, next year is what I want to see. Will we be 2-2 on invites, or will we be 1-3? And is once every four years good enough? I don't think that it is. Not for UT.

This is where I'm at...as proud as I am at how well the team has played in the tournament, I'm still skeptical of Martin over the long term.

Congratulations to the TN players and Coach Martin for making it fun to be a TN fan again in anything. It's been a while now. Good luck against Michigan. TN is due in this tournament to finally do something.

And I will add that I liked seeing CCM show some emotion in the post-game interview. Been waiting and wanting to see that.

One other thing, it's painfully obvious coaches and players look at these boards. I was always hopeful they were too busy to do so but obviously I am very naive. Quite the tongue lashing we got from the broadcasters.

I am extremely happy he has turned the team around and showing some emotion during the game. Cuonzo had criticism due him until 4 weeks ago. His team did not show up fired up and ready to play. He was a terrible game coach, made some very questionable calls and timeouts. A coach dont wont critized he/she should do their job. He has been doing a great job the last month. Why did it take him so long to get the team playing to their potential? Could it be with all the negative publicity he was getting he realized his job may be in jeopardy?

I don't care about Pearl. I'm not going to argue this. It is my opinion. I'm not going to change your mind and you won't change mine.

McDman444 I agree with you. I credit CCM for this run but in reality we've not beaten a top tier team in this run. But the team has played very well of late.

There are only 16 teams left...in the nation. U.T. has effectively eliminated all other teams by winning the games placed in front of them. This includes upsetting a higher seed in the second round.

This run has been great. It doesn't matter what you do in the regular season as long you make the tournament and do something once you get there. Everybody in the tournament starts 0-0. I still have some remaining doubts about Cuonzo's coaching but he's got the boys playing hard and peaking at the right time. He's 3-0 and nobody in the tournament can say that now.

Actually I prefer "Moral Victories" during the season, and no post season!

yes, this makes up for it. The way they are playing and attacking. The attitude. The wins. I expected sweet 16 this year, was pissed because I didn't think it would happen, and here we are.
I'm happy for CM, the team and the fans.

Were you paying attention to the last year of UT basketball?

Regarding the title of the thread, the only that matters is how you play at the end of the season. The previous games don't matter at this point.

I think questioning coaching decisions is okay. It's part of the fan/coach relationship. All coaches should expect it. What bothered me was the BBB petition. That took it to a new level. That, IMO, was a step too far.

This Sweet 16 run absolutely erases the misery imposed on fans during the regular season. Great job and congratulations to Zo and the players. Is this a one year aboration due to a very talented team gelling at the right time? Can Zo get this kind of cohesion and production from players during a down year in talent? We will certainly see come next season. But for the time being, this has been an excellent run. Proud of their fight during a season where the fans (myself included) had packed their coach's bags for him. Keep rolling Big Orange.
