I think he leaves for the NBA, not because he is ready but because that is the trend. Everyone is scared of these “career ending” injuries, which rarely, if ever happen. College players these days want to get paid NOW. I think going to Europe or G-League is a decent option to get paid fast, but a lot of people in Phillips position can make A LOT more money if they can get someone to draft them in the first half of the first round.

It’s NBA or he’s staying. The people who think he is transferring are just throwing crap against the wall to see if it sticks. Barnes has praised Phillips and the way he practices, Phillips is ELITE defensively and the numbers show that, and he gets A LOT of playing time. There’s no reason whatsoever for him to transfer from such a good program who is probably in the tourney again next season. Also, where he will most likely be the star go to guy.

Springer, a UT one-and-doner and a first-round pick, is in his 2nd NBA season and I think averaging about 2 minutes a game.
Johnson, a UT one-and-doner and also a first-round pick in 2021, is also in his 2nd NBA season and averaging maybe 8 minutes a game.

This is what most one-and-doners actually do after being drafted on potential--sit on the bench. I've never understood why you'd give big, first-round contracts to guys who are not ready and won't be--if at all--for 2/3/4 years--but that's how the NBA rolls.

I thought Springer needed another year here, and being a Sixer fan I've followed his progress. He has elite defensive skills, but is a below average shooter and limited offensive player. He's often been great in the G-League, where he's spent most of his time so far, and is able to bully guards there and get to the rim. His FT shooting is excellent, meaning he has the talent to develop a decent jump shot, but it hasn't happened yet.
Supposedly he's going to get a shot at a roster spot next year, but at this point I don't see him as any more than a bench player.

IMO

If he stays in college, he’ll hit the portal. This enemic offense is not his style.

Tell us what kind of offense Tennessee runs, describe the way it's run, and then tell us, with specifics, why Tennessee should be running something different...and what that different offense should be.

You nailed it…then they are out of the league when they don’t get a second contract.

So many of these players would be so much better served to stay in school until they actually develop and refine real BASKETBALL skills.

I don’t think they would develop any better staying in college than they would in a professional org. Opposite I would wager. Most of them just weren’t going to cut it regardless.

The advantage of developing those skills "in" the NBA is your paycheck allows you to contract with specialists/trainers/tutors to coach up your deficiencies during and after the season.

If you're the (typical Tennessee) guy with great defensive skills but limited offense... then you're kinda the ideal practice player for improving your team's starters on their offense (and rebounding).

He needs to look at Kobe Brown from Mizzu... 5 star that got better each year and prolly worked his way into the first round..Didn't go as well.as he prolly thought being hyped but worked his way into the hype
I don’t think Brown was a highly rated recruit.

Kobe Brown wasn’t that highly rated but I see your point.

He’ll make more money staying another year to work on his handles and get stronger.

All of that plus he needs to learn to finish above the rim

If he is a lottery pick we should all put our name in the hat to be drafted. I don't watch every minute of every game but what I do watch he passes up wide open looks and turns the ball over alot. Heck, I pick him last in a rec pickup game. LOL
He definitely needs to stay in college and learn the game and get better.

Tried to comment in your dumbass thread but it got merged. Stop belittling our players. No one thinks he’s a lottery pick. It’s not bad that he needs another year.

He needs several years, he is the worst player Barnes has continued to play. It gets old watching such a negative impact on our play. Anybody with a smidgen of basketball knowledge can see it. Might as well play with 4!

He will hit the transfer portal moving to a program that can better prepare him for the NBA
He should. I'm not belittling him. It's called constructive criticism and frankly just stating the obvious truth. He is probably a great kid but killing us on the court. People want to baby and blow smoke up these players butts these days.

Needs to stop using Vaseline. That has to be why he loses the ball so much in the lane right?? Lol. He will be back IMO. He just needs to get so much stronger.

The critial 1 point Phillips scored last night actually ended up being a critical 1 point Barnes needed to stay from being embarrassed at the end.

Phillips was a huge liability last night. He was a turnover machine early in the game and Barnes did sit him for it, but should have yanked him about 2 possessions or more before he did....

Where would Phillips go? No disrespect to the kid and he may prove to be a great player some day. But right now he isn't playing D league or overseas.

Are you asking if he may hit transfer portal to a lesser division school? That may be the more likely route at this juncture.

Phillips was not in the game last night mentally or physically.....
