Disgusting scenes from the student section

Instant gratification generation. If they don't get their way they throw a tantrum..or in this case really hard plastic bottles.

From a newspaper dated October 6, 1989. I remember my cousin and his friends, UT students at the time who attended the game, boasting about how they had misbehaved. They bragged about several Auburn fans leaving, the Auburn band having to cover their heads to keep from getting pelted, and Pat Dye getting on the security guards' cases for not doing enough.

This is nothing new. It doesn't excuse it, but it's inaccurate to blame this generation, as though they're any worse than the ones that came before.

You'd probably be the first in line crying if you got hit in the face with one of those bottles.

So you're telling me if you see some student in the heat of the moment throw a little plastic water bottle he should be arrested for assault? That's completely stupid.

I'm not sitting here saying people should be throwing stuff, but charging them with assault is way over the top for a plastic water bottle or a plastic cup. Now if it's glass, that's a different story.

There should be cops near the student section and anybody caught throwing stuff on the field should be booted and/or arrested. Getting drunk is one thing, throwing bottles or anything on the field or at the opposing bench is dangerous and should not be tolerated.

Actually I'm telling you that if anyone throws a bottle or anything really from a section and it hits someone, yes they should be arrested for assault. It pales in comparison of stupidity to someone throwing a water bottle from the stands at people.

VN has embraced mediocrity in athletics and become the moral compass for the rest of the sports world. Starting to feel like Vanderbilt a little bit.

On one of my first trips to Neyland we played Army and there were fans (not students, just regular adult fans) throwing junk at the cadets...I would have to say the behavior of our crowd is better than it used to be from what I've witnessed.

I think a stadium chair got tossed in the 1983 Ole Miss game. Did some damage to the pour soul that got it in the head. I've seen big ole 32 oz plastic cups half full of Skoal coming out of the upper deck, drunk frat boys would burn you with their ciggies back in the day when smoking in the stadium was acceptable and saw some kid blow chunks on the hair and down the back of some girls dress at the 84 Bama game. Nothing new about immature, drunken behavior in the student section.

I wondered why Maty Maulk kept his helmet on after the game. Smart move.

Be thrown in jail for throwing a plastic bottle down a couple flights of stairs? That's ridiculous. Some of ya'll are so sensitive.

Throw a plastic water bottle at a cop and see how sensitive they are when they taser your ass and put you on the ground.

Verbal abuse, profanity, etc are classless but fine I can understand that a bit. But there is zero reason for this type of behavior which is dangerous. It starts as something like this and evolves into even more dangerous behavior. What if your kid gets hit in the eye by an opposing fan just throwing a water bottle down a couple flights of stairs?

I used to be an usher in the student section everything your describing went on while I was working over there in the mid 2000's. One time I saw a big GLASS jack bottle rain down from somewhere in the rows above me and came a few inches from nailing a LSU fan in the head that was walking by.

I hate to lose more than anybody but I really hate to be sore losers. Ribbing opposing fans and players is all in fun but when it turns violent, in example throwing objects, degrading and cussing, etc than that isn't called for in my opinion. I for one want opposing fans to enjoy their experience in Neyland stadium WHILE LOSING. We have the greatest stadium in college football let's show it off not drive people away with bad experiences so they can go tell all their friends how they were treated horribly in Knoxville and they don't want to return.

Seems like our student section thinks that if they behave like FL we will play like FL......oh wait.

It is an assault. No way to claim that it isn't. To claim it isn't is what's stupid.

First let me start off by saying that I am a student. Not sure if anyone noticed or saw, but towards the very end of the game last night many, many bottles and other objects were thrown onto the field towards the Missouri bench. It was pretty ugly. A couple players were hit, including one with a half full bottle of water, which exploded on impact. This caused the Missouri bench to turn and begin to mock our students, which they had every right to do. A just punishment imo would be if every imbecile who threw something had to line up at midfield and received a punch to the face from the Missouri player who was hit, number 56 I believe. The student section has been a disaster all year. From all of the "F you *Insert team*" at the end of every loss to the countless drunk-beyond-ability-to-function kids falling over themselves as they "cheer" on their Vols. These actions need addressing and not just via a email from Jimmy Cheek which everyone will just mark as read and move on. I truly believe Butch needs to address the student body in its entirety on these matters.

Happens at every student section in American, especially in the SEC. Just as bad at Ala, LSU, AU, Fl and GA. Those are just stadiums I have been too..Heard SCe is the same way. They are drunk 18-22 yr old kids..Promise you it's not just UT.

I'm 24 and even I recognize the need for patience with this program. Don't lump us all together. :)

The 'instant gratification' **** gets brought up every so often, yet most of the people on here crying after losses and calling for coaches to be fired were born pre-1980.

There are clowns in every generation. It doesn't make it okay, but it's not any worse than it has been in the past.

What was thrown at the Mizz players while they were huddled on the field during a TV timeout? It came from H or I (beside the band) and it shattered/crumbled at their feet. I would guess it had enough weight to travel 50 yards. Possibly and Apple?

Those making excuses for stupid actions are laughable. This is the blame everyone else nation. Kinda reminds me of the excuses the NO saints fan made. No one is at fault anymore. Never say sorry or it's wrong. Just redirect.

Well I'm not going to apologize since I didn't do it and I'm not responsible for the actions of 18-22 year old drunktards. Hopefully they can catch anyone that does it in the future.

Big deal.

Go put some keep off the grass signs in your front yard or poison some neighborhood dogs. Or something else that bitter blue hairs find enjoyable.
