Devrin Young....do you really think?

Freshman Devrin Young is expected to be a full-go in practice this week. The 5-foot-8, 165-pound Knoxville resident missed most of preseason camp after suffering a broken collarbone in August. He returned to contact in practice last week for the first time and simulated Florida's Chris Rainey on the scout team.

Dooley said Young is a "hybrid guy" who will play some at running back and in the slot as a receiver, as well as returning punts.

"It's not going to happen overnight, but hopefully he progresses in the next two weeks where we can put him in the game and see what he can do," Dooley said. "He's got really good ball judgment, so he can catch those punts pretty good. He's a natural and he has a lot of elusive ability."

how fast is devrin?

He was runner-up in the 100-meter dash at the 2010 Class AAA state track meet, losing by 0.01 seconds.

Explosive lateral movements and power complement Young’s north-and-south speed. Quickness and juking ability mask what he lacks in size.

Maryville High School football coach George Quarles, who has won seven state titles in the last 10 years, said in 2009 that Young “may be the most explosive guy I’ve seen on this (Maryville) field.”

4.5 40 on rivals. Lattimore ran a 4.46 and the biggest knock on lattimore is his speed, (not quickness). So take that for what its worth. A guy 5 inches taller and 60 pounds heavier runs faster than him. He may be quick and elusive which is why the coaches want him in the punt game, but he isnt going to out run anybody

Ran a laser time 4.39 at UT. Rivals time wrong. Also ran a 10.70 in the 100m. I don't see what is so hard for people to see that the kid has speed

Ive yet to read anything on him running a 4.9 at UT. I remember Mckeefery having everybody run the 40 and he wasnt even in the top 5. All i know is ESPN has him at 4.63 and rivals has him 4.5 so i guess espn and rivals are wrong. The only place to give devrin a 4.4 was bearden.

I would love to see him on punt returns/ screens passes. It could not hurt and we need something now on the offensive playbook now since Hunter is out. I read somewhere that we had designed 20plays just for Hunter to get the ball. That is a huge chunk of your playbook out the window.

At two camps he ran a 4.39. UT and Ole Miss I believe it was. People there verified during recruiting. Do you honestly think a kid that has run a 10.7 100m can only run a 4.63 forty. Please

Lattimore runs a 10.5 so yea i do. Maybe not a 4.63 but definitely along 4.5. Lattimore was about 2 milliseconds faster than DY on the 40 time and the same for the 100 time so it makes sense to me.

Well I guess he is slower than Lat. Forget what insiders at UT camps say...you are right. You have decoded the speed chart and figured up his speed. Well done. The amount of mis-informed posters on this board baffle me

lol sorry you were proved wrong. I mean i have sources for my claims unlike yours and even i proved that he is slower than lattimore from his 100 meter you were bragging about.

I will say i made an error and it was actually Trent Richardson who ran the 10.5 and not Lattimore, but the point remains the same that DY doesnt have good top end speed.

Lol. Stop. Your killing me. Your "sources" of the recruiting sites. Will the kid ever do anything at UT? No person on here can know that. He may never do a single thing at this level. I watched him multiple times at bearden. It was comical the stuff he did. Should he against inferior competition? Yes he should have. The thing is he did and with relative ease. Multiple times having 200+ yards rushing and 4 or 5 tds in the 1st half and not play the second. Is he going to carry the load 25 times a game at UT? No. Is he going to be as food as Lattimore? No. However the kid is fast. Clocked at UT camp on laser time at 4.39 and 4.41 on his two runs. I was heavily involved in helping one of his teammates at Bearden through some things in his life. He and Devrin were good friends. Devrin is a good kid. Never really bragged about the different things he did either. I heard a lot of things about him and his recruitment through this other young man. Whether you want to believe it or not the kid is fast. Plenty fast for SEC and plenty quick. But keep trusting your "sources"

I never said he was a bad guy or he cant help us. The coaches obviously see something in his punt return ability. That being said, if your expecting him to be a lamicheal james or jeff demps than your going to be extremely disappointed. I hope im wrong, but with the way east tennessee has produced talent, i always have my doubts. I see how Espn and rivals would just mess up on his 40 time on purpose. He is a fast guy, but people are acting like we found our chris rainey or jeff demps.

He is fast but he is not Rainey or demps. No argument here on that.

Dooley said its time to add some competition to fire some people up. DY will bust his ass thats for sure. He may not be as good as the other two but he will have more want to than either because hes got a chip on his shoulder. Might be a good thing.

He better be careful about having a chip on his broken shoulder!jkg

What makes this guy different is acceleration. Watch his highlights - he hits full stride after two steps. He may not be the fastest guy on the team, but he would be dangerous on a toss sweep. I hope they give him a chance against Buffalo.

If DY is taking reps at running back we are in serious trouble. I assumed he was strictly special teams.
Posted via VolNation Mobile

Why just special teams? Not sure I understand this reasoning. He is nearly identical in size to Chris Rainey who chewed our defense up last weekend. I see no reason we can't expand a bit, drop a little pass off to DY a couple yards past the line of scrimmage and see if he can make some people miss like Rainey does.
