Derek Dooley......(merged)

I'll be rooting for the Vols, and I hope this move looks like a stroke of brilliance in four years, but right now it simply reeks of desparation.

Hamilton was abruptly put in a desperate situation. A desperation move of some kind was pretty much inevitable.

Everyone was mostly relieved when Cutcliffe pulled his name out.

He pulled his name out because he wanted to bring his whole unimpressive Duke staff with him, and since we're still on the hook for most of Kiffin's staff, we didn't want to buy them out and then hire a bunch of new guys who are worse coaches.

how much of the best staff that money could buy is kiffin taking to USC besides daddy and crazy ed?

Someone told me that he's doing a 5 year, 3.7 mil / year deal. That sounds high for a coach from a small school.

spot on

well cutcliff and that staff seem to have a little better record of success than somebody from one of the former La directional schools.

i just see some chinks forming in the mighty checkerboard when yall reach this far for a coach and get shot down by so many others.

No one else so far...he tried to take Kippy Brown (former WR coach/passing game coordinator, current interim coach) but Brown turned him down and I'm not sure who else he asked.

None. He left the rest of them, most of whom have multiple year contracts.

There are still some good coaches on staff, which is why Hamilton didn't want to pay them off and hire Cutcliffe's worse guys.

The most galling one is Kiffin's brother in law. If we dump him, then he's free to take our money and go work for free as a graduate assistant.....at USC.

I'm beginning to think this is like the WWE sports entertainment network on steroids. With the SEC, the NCAA and the media as the scripted protagonists. If my theory is correct Jon Gruden will be named Coach in Prime Time tonight................................

Which is why I think making no move would have been better. Tag Kippy, see how he progresses next season, and see who is available during a more reasonable time frame.

There is no way that is a worse scenario than taking a chance on making a hire that has the real possibility of turning out very badly for everyone involved.

I was thinking more like the football version of Buzz Peterson. But whatever.

Just remember, it could be worse and no one is a guarantee.

I suppose that's the rallying cry because there's really nothing else to hang onto to.

Seems like Kippy would have been the best hire....of course I came to that conclusion when I thought the Roper Bros. were moving back to Knoxville.

I am not so sure Kippy wants the job.

If this happens with Dooley, Hamilton needs to be fired. I know I have been defending him up to this point but I started remembering something Hamilton said during our last coaching search, that UT was not as a desirable job as one would think. I wonder if he is short selling this program?
UT is NOT as desirable a job as some delusional TN fans like to think it is. Late 90's this was obviously a top 5 program. early this decade top 10 and we have been in a steady decline ever since. We can't even attract a military coach for God's sake. It's about time some UT fans get a reality check IMO.

As easy as it is for us to kick dirt on Dooley, please take into consideration that 5 of the 8 teams that beat LaTech last year probably could have beaten us at some point in '09.

I like the hire.

You can't be serious? No way we'd pay LA Tech's coach 3.7 million.

Not to worry ... That's a typo.

It's not 3.7 mIl ... It's 3.7 mDl (That's the Moldavian lei), which equates to about $300k in US dollars.

See, Hammy was thinking (I know - I crack myself up too!) BIG picture. He figured after THIS mess, Moldavia will be about the only place he can get hired in the future, so he went ahead and put Dooley's contract together in the native currency of his future home.

But, of course, he does get a hat :hi: and a free bowl of soup with that!!

$3.7 mil for a losing WAC coach ... Ahh ... If only I had access to Hammy's bong!!

If Doofus was the last option, I wish we had hired the Real Mr. Roper, Norman Fell.

Didn't Memphis overlook this guy earlier this year....?

This is absolutely pathetic.
