Derek Dooley......(merged)

Sumlin has succeeded using a very gimmicky offense. Could he succeed in the SEC? I don't know, but I don't think he is ready yet. Just my opinion.

Sumlin has a better record than Dooley and a lot more upside.

Great, I just received an email from a client of mine who happens to be a big Louisiana Tech support. He asked me what we were thinking... a question to which I didn't have a good answer. He added that Dooley is a "below average coach." Not my words, just passing along from someone who knows Dooley better than probably any of us on this board.

Go to YouTube to see last year's "highlights"......trust me, nothing stands out.

Nothing.

Please explain yourself. Dooley is the AD as well as the HC at LTech. He obviously is smart and can handle a heavy workload as well as pressure. Kippy Brown is nowhere near as qualified as Dooley. NOT EVEN CLOSE! Anyone who would make the grossly unqualified Kippy HC has no business being AD.
Yeah, because a 4-8 record in the WAC is a much more impressive resume line than having called plays in the NFL.

Seriously guys. Tennessee fans are ready to crucify the new coach before he has ever coached a game. He's someone most of us, including myself, have never heard of. But let's be real here. He was recruiting coordinator for NICK SABAN when he won the national championship. He can recruit! Which is a big deal to coach at Tennessee. If he is endorsed by a guy thats won two national championships and the defensive coordinator of one of the best football programs in the nation then I'm okay with this hire.

Let's face it. We were not going to get a big name coach. No coach is gonna do to his school what Kiffin did to us. The timing of this is just bad. We may not agree with the hire but he is the coach of our Vols and it is our duty as fans to support him and the team. If we don't give him our support how is he going to succeed?

We need to get over ourselves and realize that this is actually happening. I personally think it will work out in the long run. Is it a quick fix? Probably not. But in the long run this stands to be a fairly good hire for Tennessee.
Best, most well thought-out post today. Thanks, UF, for keeping us grounded. Just might be a SUPER hire. Hope springs eternal. GO VOLS!!!

Because Dooley's getting so many offers. Whose idea was this? They should be expelled from Tennessee.

Yeah, it is, when you consider the fact that Dooley has also coached in the NFL under Saban, been a HC and AD all by the age of 40. There are a lot of people who have called plays in the NFL. That doesn't mean they're HC material.

If we hire Dooley, I'm afraid we have to go through 15 years of coaches Alabama/Notre Dame style

Note to Mike Hamilton:

Ruston LA is a fine place to go when looking to schedule next years out of conference game.
However.....it is not where you go to secure a head coach for the University of Tennessee.

There have been a lot of people with four wins in the WAC. None of them are HC material for UT.

The OU staff speaks in glowing terms about Sumlin. Is he ready to be an SEC head coach? Not sure, but I'm pretty sure he's better than a guy who finishes 4-8 in the WAC in his third year.
Any truth to the Lovie Smith rumors?

He deserves consideration for the soon to be open AD position at UT. I'll give him that much.

Why is he screwing this up so badly? What is wrong with Brown? WHY was Cutcliffe ever even considered. This is absurd.

Hyams just said he left La Tech without telling any of the staff he isn't bringing to UT he was leaving. Great.

is there no one upset because cutcliff turned ya'll down?

don't ***** about offering him the job, ask why he said go away?

What's so bad about Dooley? Is he that bad a coach?

He has absoluetly nothing in his past that demonstrates he will be successful. Could he work? I don't know. I did not know the man existed before yesterday, which is pretty much the point. If you can't make a more impressive hire than this, why hire anyone at all? Leave Kippy in the post and see how things shake out.

I'll be rooting for the Vols, and I hope this move looks like a stroke of brilliance in four years, but right now it simply reeks of desparation.

Not unless you want to hear 70,000 fans chanting Rammer Jammer in Knoxville next year.

I know the UT job isn't what it once was, and that the timing is the worst thing possible, but Derek Dooley is not UT HC-quality.

Everyone was mostly relieved when Cutcliffe pulled his name out.

He pulled his name out because he wanted to bring his whole unimpressive Duke staff with him, and since we're still on the hook for most of Kiffin's staff, we didn't want to buy them out and then hire a bunch of new guys who are worse coaches.
