Derek Dooley......(merged)

Gawd: please don't equate Dooley to Meyer or Tressell. Tressell won multiple national titles at Youngstown State, Meyer pioneered the spread and was undefeated at utah. Dooley was 4-8 at La.Tech last year--playing a bunch of weak sisters. Somebody was saying that la. tech lost a /close/ game to idaho! Boy, that is comforting.

Weak sisters?? Have you looked at their schedule??? Hear are a few notes: at Auburn, at Navy, at Nevada, at Idaho, Boise State, at LSU, at Fresno State. And they lost 5 of their games by a total of 24 points.

Look, I have no idea if he will be successful but given the situation that we are in (time constraints being the biggest challenge), I like it.

Seriously guys. Tennessee fans are ready to crucify the new coach before he has ever coached a game. He's someone most of us, including myself, have never heard of. But let's be real here. He was recruiting coordinator for NICK SABAN when he won the national championship. He can recruit! Which is a big deal to coach at Tennessee. If he is endorsed by a guy thats won two national championships and the defensive coordinator of one of the best football programs in the nation then I'm okay with this hire.

Let's face it. We were not going to get a big name coach. No coach is gonna do to his school what Kiffin did to us. The timing of this is just bad. We may not agree with the hire but he is the coach of our Vols and it is our duty as fans to support him and the team. If we don't give him our support how is he going to succeed?

We need to get over ourselves and realize that this is actually happening. I personally think it will work out in the long run. Is it a quick fix? Probably not. But in the long run this stands to be a fairly good hire for Tennessee.

Who????

I don't think I've ever heard of this guy.

That's why we needed a search firm to find him. Combined with Saban's recommendation for us to hire him, what other evidence should we need?

I'm pretty sure Urban, Les, Mark, and others would give this guy a ringing endorsement as well.

Geez... what's wrong you people?

Does anyone remember who the coach at Tulane was the year (1998) that they went undefeated??? All I'm saying is, to me and from what I've heard, the guy is of unquestionable character, has coached under some pretty stout coaches and is young and motivated. I'll take that over a Cutcliffe any day of the week.

By the way, the coach of Tulane was Tommy Bowden.

Of course I'm not going to remember who their coach was 12 years ago. Florida hired Meyer immediately after he went 12-0. There is a difference there. June Jones, Brady Hoke, Kyle Wittingham, Chris Petersen... I remember them going undefeated during the regular season and know who they are.

If Mike Hamilton thinks Dooley is a better candidate than Kippy Brown, he's not qualified to hire coaches.

Agree 100% Hat. This is a BIG mistake.

Edit: Sorry Hat, i no longer agree with you. This guy is going to be a great hire.
I suggest you read up on the man. I did not like it at first, knee jerk kind of reaction.
Now that i know more about this man, i am behind Coach Dooley 100%

Go Vols!!!!!

He's not that bad, but this deal is not done. Media was going crazy over Cut being hired yesterday.

Isn't is a lose-lose? If he sucks then we lose, if he turns out to be amazing he will just bolt for georgia in a few years.

He has very little ties to GA other than his dad. He is a UGA alum and has spent virtually all of his professional career outside the GA circle. He has a good background. A 17-20 record at LaTech is not a bad run considering what he had to build from. This is not a bad hire if true. If he could sell LaTech and bring it from what it was to where it is, and he has SEC ties, then he could certainly sell UT. He has extensive work under Saban, who no doubt knows how to win and teaches that to his staff. You have to look at this objectively. At this stage of the recruiting cycle, no coach at a large and successful program with no ties to the area or conference, with an ounce of integrity, is going to pull a Kiffin.

I am not so sure Kippy wants the job.

If this happens with Dooley, Hamilton needs to be fired. I know I have been defending him up to this point but I started remembering something Hamilton said during our last coaching search, that UT was not as a desirable job as one would think. I wonder if he is short selling this program?

Is this a sure thing or another "sure thing?" I am still hopeful for Kippy, but looks rather bleak for him.

If it is Dooley...I will give benefit of doubt to him and see what transpires, what the hell else can I do.

I have been through some bleak times before, stayed a fan and will continue to be a fan always hoping for the best.

Keeping fingers crossed for Kippy...GO VOLS
