Defensive staff set

Chop is out. Somebody needs to be taking a hard look at the not-so-special teams coach.
Totally agree! This doesn't get talked about as much as the other issues. Also, Ekeler was the only coach on the sideline that had any fire about him. The team doesn't play with much intensity.

does this mean we’re losing an offensive on field coach or special teams? Maybe Alec Abelin or Evan Crabtree? Thought we could only have 10 on field assistants.

Halzle - OC-QB
Knowles - DC
Sims - RB
Pope - WR
Abelin - TE
Elarbee - OL
Garner - DL
Jackson - Edge
Inge - LB
Hunter - CB
Poindexter - S
Crabtree - ST

That’s 12 people. How many are we allowed?
There’s no limit anymore on the number of on-field coaches that a school can have. But, there is a limit to how many people can be on the road recruiting.

Inge is a solid coach and may already have a guaranteed contract. He is a superb communicator. I think Chop and Ernest Thomas are quality coaches and recruiters but trust Knowles to bring his core team and extended auxiliary staff in and upgrade the program considerably. Absolutely retain some SEC veterans like Garner who I bet will be super motivated with the new group.

Our LBs have been bad… real bad. Slow, unathletic, and terrible at reads/angles. I’m surprised they kept him.

I know that Penn St had a "letdown" year. Although it would be nice to get 3-4 of those dudes to help this transition.
I’d almost take Penn St’s entire defense over ours. At least they ranked in the mid 30’s in total defense in Knowles first year. Just think of how many more wins we’d have if our defense wasn’t straight garbage with a total defense ranking around 90th to 100.

So right now defensive staff is:
Rodney Garner - D Line
Andrew Jackson - Edge
William Inge - Linebackers
Michael Hunter Jr. - Cornerbacks
Anthony Poindexter - Safeties

Chop Harvin - either gone or demoted to analyst.

Does this mean we’re losing an offensive coach too? Maybe Alec Abelin?

Only way we could add one of these more as an on field coach is if we get rid of an offensive coach or special teams coordinator

The best defensive news I hope to soon hear is that Heup has hired a great OC and has decided to finally try this being-a-head-coach thing.

Some laugh, but Ryan Day has been head coach and play caller for exactly two games in the last two years...loss to Michigan last year and last weekend against Miami.

Maybe some merit to the thought...

Good question. Could we see the special teams job divided up to multiple position coaches? We had that before I think. Not a whole lot on punting anyway. Get Fuad out of the booth part time for the new kicker. Coverages????

Ok. I looked at PSUs scores over the past 5 years. I didn’t realize Poindexter was at PSU for 5 years. Their points against were actually pretty solid before this year (I know, it’s just one set of data). Surprisingly, PSUs points against got worse this year when Knowles joined, especially giving up a ton of points to UCLA and Rutgers of all teams. Maybe there was a lot of defensive turnover this year and they tried to implement Knowles more complex system. Of course, the previous year for Knowles was fine at OSU, but they (like PSU) play so many cupcakes it’s hard to make assumption. Not really arguing anything here, but I am kind of glad these two coaches are coming together as a random to perhaps speed up the learning curve. One thing is for certain, both the OSU and PSU defenses look better, at least on paper than ours.

Now that the defensive staff is set. Has anyone heard anything about the S&C coach? I have watched a few podcasts mentioning Tommy Moffitt. That would be great. I really wish Heupel would make a huge offer to Scott Cochran.

Inge would’ve been part of Bama’s staff if we hadn’t stole him. I think it’s possible that Banks system was holding him back some. We also have a lack of speed at the position.

This!!!! Watching pavia and altimeter running for huge gains and our linebackers chasing him like he was desean Jackson was infuriating.

The kickoff return for a TD by Dodson was the first since September of 2021. Almost 5 full seasons. We seem content to just fair catch punts or not take a chance on kickoffs. The punt team and Ross was pretty good, but we never have any wrinkles or ever try a fake punt. The FG team was not good, especially in clutch moments. Special teams can change a game and we don’t seem to be interested in making them a strong point of the team. When is the last time we blocked FG or punt?

We had a punter in Jackson Ross that can supposedly throw the football well and can kick with either foot and we have never once tried a fake punt with him. In 2 full years never once. Go figure.

I’ve tried to, but can’t figure it out.

When Heupel first got here he was daring and knew he had to out score teams to win. Last year he didn’t trust Nico and did the defense and got too conservative. This year he played not to lose and bit us several times. He is going to have to be a better game day coach and quit playing so scared or he won’t be here much longer.
