Please stop!!!
Spurrier lucked out to voters for second chance to play for NC after FSU beat them
Meyer lucked out against UT after a bogus penalty against leak which resulted in Called back TD
Saban lucked out on blocking a last sec kick to win for sabans year. In which I don't call luck but skill
In 98 fulmer never lucked out but had some close calls but their skill level prevailed. Even against syracuse it was a blatant call which transferred to our win. Not luck but skill.
In 98 there is not 1 controversial call that can't be scene as a right call
The coaching sucked from day 1, but the recruiting was otherworldly and the competition suited to our winning.

Simply doesn't stand up to the facts from the real world outside the back door.
His record against quality competition is comparable, and proudly comparable, to Spurrier and Saban. He was, as we know, the master of the double digit dog.
In addition, he kept us competitive in the league at a time when Tennessee becomes one of THE most difficult coaching jobs in the country because of:
1. Expecatations
2. Heavy recruiting disadvantages relative to rivals
3. Parity in league between facilities and AD budgets
And yet, we were competing for the SEC crown every three years, and, unfortunately, got very unlucky in two of those games (against eventual NCs).
Why, after repeatedly saying he wants to get back into coaching, three years after he left Tennessee, has Fulmer STILL not been hired by anyone? Not South Florida, not Louisville, not UConn, not (hahahaha) Notre Dame...he tried to insert his name into all of those coaching searches and I don't even think he's gotten an interview yet. Why?

His "mediocre" end included three SECCG appearance which is what every Vol fan should want at the start of every season.
Yes, it is important to get over, but we happened to hit three eventual NC in those games. In 2001, we actually fell victim to the terrorists whose murderous actions moved the Florida game to the week before the SECCG.
In addition, what most of us realized was Phil Fulmer was the best coach for Tennessee at the time. Without the Hambone Experiment, 2008 is still mediocre, but a winning season. We also realize that 2005 and 2008 were aberrations with the worst QB play ever in NCAA history from two NFL QBs - survivable in the ACC, deadly in the SEC. And yet, we still would have had a winning season. All the coaching in the world could not slow the game down for Crompton, who had five different OCs. In addition, the landscape of the SEC changed in the noughties - with four different NC - which makes coaching at Tennessee one of the most difficult in the country - and still we were competing for the SECC.
Subsequently, we have been proven right as rain. After all the machinations, Hambone appoints Lane Kiffin if and only if his Daddy is part of the package. In essence, he hired a septugenarian coordinator to replace our 2nd greatest coach ever. Foolishness could not be writ more large. When we had the great fortune of the "worst SEC coaching hire in 60 years" dashing to the Left Coast, Hambone still could not secure a proven winner.
I have said many times, I have some sympathy for the FCF crowd. Phil did let his foot off the gas for a couple of years. I personally think it was like Michael Jordan playing baseball. I think Phil was returning full circle, ready for one last "decade of dominance" push. He got unlucky in 2001 and 2007 (nothing he could do about 2004). I feel the fire was back. He had a better recruiting class lined up than the eventual Kiffin class (now the most epic bust class in 60 years of SEC football), and one that fits needs. The players we would have had under Fulmer would have had us in contention for the SECE last year.
But Hambone exhibited all the foolishness of the GoF on this board. This board was thrilled with a coach because he was mentioned (pejoratively, actually) in Lil Wayne songs. This was "the way forward." This was "The Plan." Meanwhile, the core was alienated, and that coach - well, is a symbol of market failure and the End Times of Capitalism. He will stay at his "dream job" only as long as they have penalties to pay.
The foolishness could not be more alive in vivid technicolor today.
Callig that load of crap delusional was very kind.Delusional. And you're relying on data Vegas provided (and interpreted like an idiot) that he won't give us a source so that it can be checked. The most likely reason for he nomdisclosure being that we've found every single set of numbers he's posted to be false.

We could have easily been 8-3 in the regular season in '98. Syracuse, Florida, Arkansas. Would you make the argument that it was great coaching that won those games, or one great play by one individual player that turned the tide in all three?
Go back and watch the games before you respond.
Go Vols.
I was at the Florida and Arkansas games, I dont have to go back and watch them. Simply put we won the damn games. Theirs a Crystal Trophy in Knoxville. We are and always will be the 1998 National Champions coached by Phillip Fulmer of Winchester, TN. He recruited the team, he went undefeated and WON the NC. I dont give a damn who on here likes him and who dont the fact of the matter is he was 152-52 with (2) SEC titles and a National Championship. YOU CANT CHANGE THAT....SORRY. There are breaks in every championship season by every team that wins a NC. You want to put 100% of the blame of the losses on CPF and then not give him an ounce of credit for the wins. 152-52. 152-52.
Is there one honest CPF hater on Volnation?
Come on gang. Im asking this question to all CPF bashers, lets see who will be honest. If I told you CDD would coach 204 games, win 152, struggle against Florida, beat Alabamas brains out for 8 years, win 2 SECCG's and a National Champioship over the course of the next 15-16 years, honest to God, would you take it? Honest answers only please.
Think about it.
Putting on ignore = can't run with the big dogs.
It's as simple as that.
But what I'd like to know is 1. what was the incorrect pop culture reference, and 2. misguided econ lesson.
Well? Still thinking about it? Maybe you're watching :
"Decade of Dominance"?
The Fiesta Bowl?
The 96 Bama game - "Jay Graham 79 yards TOUCHDOWN Tennessee!!"?
The 98 Florida Game?
Who knows maybe the 2008 Vandy and Wyoming games?
There are no wrong answers. I just want honest ones.
I don't think anybody here hates him. I imagine that the majority simply take issue with people lile Vegas and gibbs, who talk about CPF like he is General Neyland. Along those same lines, Vegas and gibbs present erroneous information, and when asked for sources, they disappear.

Would you take CPF's career for the Gamecocks? I dont talk about him like he's General Neyland, but I also realize that there were alot more fond memories of the large Orange than there were bad during his tenure. I've never stated that I didnt think it was time for a change. But, I will never understand the bashing, the "he ran UT into the ground", "a big fat Failure" and all that crap. I'm probably older than many on here, used to Tenn's season was one game. No one talked about championships, it was all about beating Alabama.
Still waiting on some honest answers guys.
You are a little late to this party. Gibbs and Vegas have spent months arguin that Tennessee is a third-rate job with little history and no future. Basically, Phil is the beginning, middle, and end of Tennessee football for them. I guaran-damn-tee you they have taken more than a little pleasure in each loss over the last two years.
To answer the question, I would be very happy if Dooley could replicate the first seven or eight years of Phil's career. I pray he's not allowed to sleep on the job as Phil did for the second half of his.

I would take his career between 94 and 01. In truth, Hamilton should have acted sooner than he did. By allowing CPF to hang around and 'work like heck,' he was allowing CPF to run UT football into the ground. Don't misconstrue what I am saying; Fulmer did some great things for UT. But he lasted long after his expiration date.
