Defending Fulmer

Yes.

That's a little over the top. If pf stays, then goes. 500 and is fired, we save embarrassment and attrition is controlled, so already weak OL and DL aren't thinned even more. I don't think you are being objective on this point. I think pf should have been gone a few years back, but kiffins blaze thru ktown was tornadic.

What departed OL or DL do you think would have helped? The OL we fielded in 2008 was about as upperclassmen-laden as you could ever hope to find. They were horrible. Think how that outmanned 2009 OL performs not only without capable coaches like Mitch Browning, Jim Chaney, and Jim Cregg, but with an oaf like Greg Adkins. Think about 2008 Crompton. Think how awesome our running game was with one of the NFL's top rushers and how great it would be without him. Consider that we lost 3 of the top 4 receivers from 2007-2008. I don't think 2009 would have been .500. When you think of the level of uproar and absolute fan revolt, it would have been a downright nasty season, possibly culminating in UT's first ever eight loss season.

As for recruiting, the 2009 class had its share of busts, but when you look at who would have been here otherwise, the alternative isn't better. 2010 recruiting would have been Vandy-esque.

If Fulmer stays, we have Tajh Boyd/Bryce Petty/BJ Coleman as our QB depth chart instead of Bray. We have Aubrey Phillips, Carson Anderson, Darius Myers, Preston Bailey, etc. on our OL instead of JaWuan James and Zach Fulton. Prentiss Waggner probably starts at safety because we don't have Janzen Jackson. Zach Rogers starts. How is this so hard for some of you to understand?

I doubt Aubrey would make it here very long.

I understand talent, but you don't understand that the high attrition with the kiffin hire/departure will take another 3 yrs to get a full scholarship team.

How many scholarship athletes do we have now, and what exactly are we missing out on?

We are really close to 80 at the moment. Not sure if a couple of guys are on scholarship or not, but I'd say even if Alex Bullard doesn't have one he's a scholarship quality player.

2 years probation for each year he coached here seems to cheapen it a bit. Kiffin did alot of damage while he was here, specifically to our reputation.

I think its 70. DD said it would be 3 yrs of recruiting classes to build the numbers back up, which is needed for sec depth. You name various players as hypotheticals, but what if we have some decent football players on the team instead of the dozen or so kiffin recruits that have amounted to nothing? Its all a guess, so I'm going with the option that allows the team to recover faster. Pf one more year would have been a low point, but the kiffin saga took it deeper and made rebuilding more challenging.

We have at least 76. We aren't taking the max size recruiting class this year and I presume it's because of the 85 man limit.

That reputation damage didn't seem to torpedo the last two recruiting classes.

You must have missed Dooley's comment when he said that the NCAA investigation was killing recruiting. It has caught up with us.

Its not my made up number of years to catch up. It came from Dooley.

Odd that a week later he accepted around eight commitments. And Dooley's MO doesn't seem to be pushing for early pledges.

Well I suppose the 2010, 2011, and 2012 classes will have us there. So technically he is correct.

LOL. I wonder where our class ranks with the rest of the SEC right now. We are hardly killing it right now, that may change, but as of right now we are not exactly making national news with our signees.

I imagine the NCAA issues surrounding Auburn have them paralyzed. If the NCAA is the big problem perhaps waiting on them would be preferable to accepting boatloads of guys we evidently don't really want.

Are you claiming the program is better for hiring Kiffin than if Fulmer had stayed one more year?

I'd say so, assuming the sanctions won't be too bad.

The only question for me is if we could have gotten a better coach holding Fulmer one more year.

If Dooley turns out to be the guy, then I certainly think hiring Kiffin was better than another year of Fulmer.

Auburn hasn't stood in front of the NCAA already, Tennessee has. We have already placed ourselves on probation before the NCAA delivers it's penalties. I don't know why you think UT and Auburn are in the same boat right now.

Not to mention they just won a freaking NC.
