Dear Bishop Boswell,

Boswell had a good game tonight, with a team high +12 plus/minus performance. He made it a point to hold on to the ball and be the one to take some vital free throws. I give him a lot of credit for helping get the win tonight and am happy to eat some crow.

At the same time, while I think it is great to give him credit, I also think we need not overhype his performance as well. He has to develop an outside shot or else he will get the Mashack treatment. In fact, I think Houston eventually caught on and at the end of the game it was clear Jakobi was the only threat to shoot outside the paint.
Mashack actually developed into a damn good outside shooter and it paid off nicely last year

To be fair, this opinion was shared by practically the entire fanbase until about two hours ago.

Not me. I caught a lot of slander last year for saying he needed heavy minutes in blowouts so he can get ready to be an anchor in the post ZZ era.

He wasn’t ranked that high coming out of high school for sh!T’s and giggles

Great irony in postgame comments by Sampson, questioning the one sided free throw attempts in the box score in favor of Vols. Watching the replays as the game was in progress to any neutral observer it was absurd some of th calls against the Vols.

There were scrums under the basket in second half where there was no whistle when multiple fouls could have been assessed both ways. The inconsistentancy in college basketball referree calls in this era just a built in hazard of the game IMO.

I love being wrong. When we had our incredible defensive run in the 2nd half, Boswell was not only spectacular, but his play energized everyone else and made each of those guys play incredible defense. My brain is trying to tell me that I’ve never seen a better defensive run than that span in the 2nd half. Could it be true that what we saw was the best ever?

Great game last night Vols. Can't wait to see how this team continues to gel. We are good.

I was wrong. I'm sorry.

You play with that level of energy and effort every night, and you'll have a fan for life, here.

Great game!
Ditto. I was so wrong about him based upon impression from last year. I sent my apologies after the first game. This guy has embraced his role.

The post game had me saying "they look like babies!" bc there are some young ones. I love this team already! I didn't criticize Boswell, but I'm a fan already!

Is it just me or does Barnes look more relaxed???
Yes, you are so right! In his pregame talk with Kelvin, Barnes' back was to the camera. You could tell he was talking for at least 30 seconds and all Kelvin could do to get a word in was nod his head and say yes/yeah. It was clear that Barnes was in a good place pregame.

It's up there, for sure. You hold any team without a point for 7 mins and 24 secs, you've done something impressive. To do it against a top-3 team on a neutral floor is entirely different, though. We only scored 10 points, ourselves, in that stretch. Just really good defense by both teams.

From the 15:46 mark to the 7:41 mark, Houston didn't hit a single shot from the field and still shot 46% for the game, which illustrates the impressive nature of that defensive stretch. It wasn't like UH couldn't throw it in the ocean from the jump or that they struggled scoring the ball. In fact, the game dropped us from #4 in adjusted defense to #10 in KenPom. We just put the clamps on them for that really long stretch, and it is what allowed us to climb back in the game and grab the lead for good.

I usually try to avoid inept officiating discussions HOWEVER last night officiating was inconsistent at best. So much hacking and physical maneuvering and sometimes it was called and sometimes it wasn’t.. Rick was working them pretty hard. That’s usually how you can tell it’s not being officiated effectively. Rick doesn’t argue…just to be arguing!

Inconsistent is a good way to describe it. The things they let go on vs some of the stuff they called had me tore up. Each trip down the floor was a guessing game as to what would/wouldn't be called a foul. Jaylen Carey got clobbered by two Houston defenders going for a layup, no call. Nate Ament’s 3 fouls were about as light as it gets in a game like that.

Houston’s guards made some incredible guarded shots. If they can score like that all season then they may have the most impressive collection of shooting guards I can recall. I tend to think they were very high on the luck factor with tough shots falling, but I was still impressed.

Yes, Flemings had Boswell in his shorts all night and hit multiple contested shots from both inside and out. I can immediately think of two 3s and two layups that he hit where Boswell couldn't play better defense.

I think Houston game was great opportunity to get some big game experience.... Houston came out aggressive and physical.....
These games are needed for the young
Players like Ament, Boswell, and Carey to control mesh as a team...
Ament was roughed up 1st half but came back late in game and played well
Go Vols!!!

I never criticized Boswell because he so clearly bled orange, even last year, and epitomizes everything great about this program. And the way Barnes spoke of his improvement and work ethic, it was clear to me there was more there than we had seen.

I'll admit that I believed his lack of offense would limit his playing time, but this kid brings the Mashack 'dawg' attitude that has been the hallmark of CRB's teams, and he is clearly a money player. Amazing that after two FT bricks early, Rick trusted him as the inbounder down the stretch, knowing he would be fouled there.

Gotta give their guys credit for converting in those situations. They were toughies and they made the plays. So many I don’t know how we won. They will be contenders as their young newbies mesh.

Loved the GENUINE togetherness our guys demonstrated post game. All seem comfortable with their roles and celebrated each guys effort. That may have been the most intense 40 minutes of executing a defensive plan I have ever seen and that takes willing bodies.
