Davenport Fired

This thread seems to have legs. A little deviation from the Davenport discussion- would like to throw a hypothetical out there.

I’m liking the rapport I see now with Pruitt and Fulmer. It appears he likes what he sees in Pruitt and has taking a mentor role as Pruitt is a first time head coach. From my chair , the chemistry of this relationship can help Pruitt flourish if Pruitt has what it takes to be a great head coach.

So what if Fulmer gets fired in the near future? Would Pruitt give up on this place? How would the fan base react? Me: a season ticket holder since the 70,s. At this juncture, I see the Fulmer / Pruitt relationship as symbiotic at this stage, and the recovery of Tennessee football is in its infancy at this stage and depends on these two working together.

As a season ticket holder, I’d be done. Love the Vols, but the dysfunction is too much.

Maybe 4 years from now Pruitt could survive an AD change, but not now. My fear is Haslam may already have an AD replacement hand picked and this is the first in a series of steps to get that person here. A real conspiracy theory, and I hope it’ll never go down like that.

Thoughts?

If I remember correctly, there were significant concerns when she came to UT that she was just an attempt to #metoo with a woman in charge so as to mitigate UT's recent Title IX questions. There were rumors at the time that she was more the social justice warrior type at her previous school. If that is true and she pushed too hard, too often, that could have alienated a number of people. I must say, some of the VERY progressive stuff coming out of UT is a shock to me and I am sad that the institution I remember seems to have lost the culture war.

But the thing is, people like the Haslams wanted a progressive in that position. Her progressivism is being used as a scapegoat here because of going against the Haslams.

How can you justify saying CJP is better than Frost or Kelly? I mean I like Pruitt, but as a HC, he hasnt proven a single thing yet. Frost and Kelly have.

Many coaches have "proven" themselves one place and moved to another place and disproved their prowess. Hiring successful coaches seems more to do with the alignment of the stars than performance based selection. In the SEC I'd take a good SEC DC as HC over most successful non SEC HCs any day.

About time she got the axe...does this mean butchna won't be around here anymore either? since his mom got fired? win, win!

UTK doesn't indoctrinate anyone. Being exposed to new cultures and becoming educated makes most people more liberal in their ideas.

College education in general is very liberal. What typically happens is that most graduates end up getting jobs that are not associated with the university and find out a lot of what they were told and taught is not reflective of the real world.

If that’s a Gator fan’s opinion, we definitely need to keep him. Gator fans are the crust at the bottom of the cesspool.

Most Gator fans would be just fine with UT keeping Fulmer. Florida dominated him as coach at UT and Florida fans saw him trot out Jeremy Pruitt just as we were trying to figure out how we were going to deal with Mike Leach taking the SEC east by storm.

My point is, it appears Fulmer lost his closest ally in Davenport. She’s the reason he was there.

The new President may think Fulmer should have left well enough alone.

She was a political hire at the time. Given Tennessee’s title 9 troubles,or perception of them anyway, it was widely reported that they’d do themselves a very strong PR “favor” by hiring their, as the article title says, “first female Chancellor”. She had little discernible experience that recommended her for the job, besides her gender....iirc, she’d been a provost for a couple of years and the interim President at Cincy for a very brief time.

So while I agree that she wasn’t vetted properly and surely wasn’t the best candidate they could’ve hired, DiPietro had his hands tied a bit during that search.

This is true ... they were looking specifically to hire a female that had certain ideologies instead of the best candidate.

Mom died of cancer 8 years ago. Never got fired.

Yep, Woodruff and Dickey were a good team as were Dickey and Fulmer. Experience and youthful enthusiasm work well together. Assistants learn from coaches, and when they make the progression to HC, an ex-coach mentor completes the cycle. That is something that could never come from impostors like Hamilton, Hart, and Currie.

100% alignment with you on all that.

In an earlier post in this thread, I said - and I was only half joking - that firing Fulmer would be about the stupidest thing one could imagine at this point and therefore all the more likely...

We can only hope that a kernel of sanity remains and that Fulmer will be left alone. Because otherwise it will cut Pruitt off at the knees and the program will remain on the skids for years to come.

We all want to know the inside story. Personally-I don’t have contacts, so I have to rely on interpreting the VolNation tea leaves.

Or, another suggestion. Doug Mathews “Big Orange Sunday” is pretty good. He talks to Fulmer often. He knows more about what is going on than he can say without getting into trouble, but on the other hand- he has strong opinions and it’s not hard to read between the lines based on tone and choice of words. I’ll podcast next Sunday’s show. It’ll be interesting to hear his take.

This is simple. In Haslam's point of view she caved in to pressure and didn't stick with hiring Schiano. Then Currie gets Leach, with Haslam's blessing, but she listens to Phil instead and refused him, thus not allowing Currie to save his skin which clearly the way for Fulmer, we no huh

Deep in the heart of Texas here, I rely heavily on VolNation (for good or ill), for whatever I can learn about the football scene in Knoxville. I'll look for your podcast posting.

Should have gone Chubb then any QB not named Mayfield at 4 IMO.

Barkley is awesome but RBs have such a short shelf life in the NFL I couldn't see going number 1 with him.

That was part of my point. I didn't see the NY teams wanting Mayfield over Darnold or Rosen or Allen.

Well Chubb and Barkley were the 2 highest rated players in the draft and Broncos scored big time with Chubb at #5.

Be honest. Most Florida fans don't know how to think to begin with. It hurts their head

Better than Frost and Kelly?

I said potentially not definitely.

I'm not 100% sold that Kelly will still have that magic as the game changes and read options aren't as unique as the wishbone anymore.

Frost did a great job and he is the real deal...

But how many NCAA Championships do they have as a coach? Pruitt has about 4 or 5 with two different schools.

Go to 1045thezone.com
Or coachdougmathews.com
Or iTunes (podcasts for the zone there)

They are usually posted up there by noon. Last Sunday still available. He talks about the BOT changes for about 5 minutes towards the end.

I get a lot of good info here and find time for these podcasts during the week sometimes.

I’m a realtor, and a lot of Sunday’s, I do open houses 2-4. I download the podcast and usually can get through it while doing the open. Just pause it when someone comes in.

I’m sure it will also be discussed on Ainge in the morning. (Wnml podcast). I also download this and listen during the day. They get most of their info from social media- so Mathews seems more credible. But Ainge has some callers that have info sometimes. Like here, some info questionable, but still it keeps you feeling like you have your finger on the Knoxville pulse when in fact you are so far away. I hate Alabama radio here. I’d be crazy if I didn’t have the internet to pull this audio.
