Darel Middleton to the transfer portal

Y'all with a higher football IQ than me... am I explaining this too simplistically?

Pruitt's defensive scheme required huge guys who could stuff the line of scrimmage and tie up two offensive linemen, thus enabling fast LBs to make the tackle.

Our current scheme is to make calculated gambles to force turnovers and loss-of-yardage plays. That requires quick, nimble DLs who can run all sorts of stunts and get penetration.

Big line-stuffers like Middleton have no role to play in that scheme.

Given his family responsibilities, Middleton absolutely needs to go someplace where he can play to his strengths and showcase his NFL potential.

Sounds line a Butch Jones type, except on defense. Not fond of a repeat, personally.

Sorry, but big and strong OL and DL win in the SEC. We need more….bigger and stronger, not less IMO.

Tennessee won when Majors & Fulmer played 4-3 defenses. Anyone see any stuffing the run LY? I sure didn’t.

I'd be happy if it went TOTALLY to an NFL Farm system. Then have REAL College guys actually attending class & Playing Football vs other College Guys doing likewise. The current system has been a joke for 40 years anyway. These guys want to be paid , hail let the NFL pay them; and stop pretending they are actually Students. I'll root for Orange whatever.
This is exactly what needs to happen. If these guys think their value is at a certain point then create a farm league and have at it. There should be no reason that these institutions should prostitute themselves for sports. The money could be better spent on kids who want an education which is the assigned mission of the institutions.

The NCAA, or some type of over seeing body, needs jurisdiction. And, you won't have that until there us an associated PLAYERS body to deal with. this might be heading towards a players union.

All I know, is with Dline numbers dropping. The guys that are left will be grinding it out in the games.

Politicizing the game with a union will drive fans away. It will all become a bureaucracy

I thought two years ago that college football would not last another 5 years but that was due to CTE. I still think that the players who did not make it to the NFL and develop CTE symptoms will come after the colleges. There are a lot more of these players than there are NFL guys and the money demanded will be much higher. That is when the colleges will declare football is no longer worth it and push it to the farm leagues.

I don't usually post with an in-your-face attitude, but I think it's time we take some pride in our own behavior as Vol fans.

The hate and empty-minded accusations posted here toward this player, by people who don't know him or his motivations, is sickening. If that's all you have to offer as a so-called supporter of the Vols, go cheer for Bama--you've already shown yourselves to be classless.
I’m personally not upset. I want every player who isn’t on board with the new regime - whether it’s playing time, scheme or general attitude - to find another school right away. We haven’t really seen this much turnover this fast, but it’ll be better for us down the road.

Schools have massive financial obligations. They need the money. But I think they’ve sold themselves to TV money completely. I see the day when stadiums will be NFL size or smaller.

If he's unwilling to meet the standard Coach Garner has set, so be it. Best wishes to the young man going forward. As Mike Tomlin has said, 'I want volunteers, not hostages." (No pun intended)

at least 20 players have entered the portal since Saturday. I say at least because outside the actual portal, no site has accurate information..

Its only going to get worse as the new rules are implemented.
20 players?! From UT?

So...here's where I'm at:

DE: Butler-Bumphus-Blakely
DT: Bailey-Garland-Terry
DT: Solomon-Thomas-Simmons
DE: Baron-Eason-Young

Still 3-deep but any more defections and we'll start eating into that depth
Been out of the loop. Any talent there? I mean I know Solomon was highly recruited but didn’t see the field at Michigan. Rest are 3-star guys or converted LBs right?

Can only hope we gain more talent and better attitudes than we lose

Hear Hear!!

Good prospect. He really did shine sometimes. Oak Ridge boy.

Hope he puts it all together somewhere else.

Still guys, there are s a group of about 5 seniors and then a bunch of other 2 year guys on that DL.
Eason and Barron were LBs last year
We added Young as a DE, then the transfers Tremblay and Terry.

That's 5 guys ADDED from 2020
Yeah, I'm still not understanding why people are panicking...
I don’t understand the panic either. When fall camp starts, we will have 80-85 scholarship players just like we always have. The athletic ability will be as good or better than that of 8 or 9 other teams on our schedule.

The big question for the 2021 team is how fast the coaches and players can make up developmental deficits; implement new schemes on offense and defense; and gel as a team. Coachable and committed players will be key.

Note: Comment is general and not meant to slight Middleton who by virtue of age and family status is a special case. I wish him well and hope he finds a good situation.

I'm thinking Butler, Thomas and Baron were 4-star guys. I think their best football is ahead of them, even if Butler is a senior.
