"An exhaustive search is underway for a person of the highest integrity and character with the skills and vision to propel Tennessee to championships. This search will be my sole focus, and I will be in regular contact with Chancellor Davenport. I want to make clear that we are intensely committed to hiring the best coach for Tennessee." -John Currie

Helm wasn't whining, and Butch degraded him.

Heaven forbid!

Bet your gonna tell me next that coaches shouldn’t show emotion? Younger generation is in for a rude awakening if this is the case. There is a line, and, there need to be whistleblowers. Geez,

Used to have a b-ball coach who threw baseballs at us while hurling insults, L O L. Folks need to chill out.

Pretty sure AD said this exact thing verbatim when they hired CBJ. Actions speak, not words.

No, have u ever been on a team? Was everyone happy? Were the upset ones always right? Sour grapes is hardly ever a good source of info

Been on plenty of teams.

A real leader gives everyone respect, not just the ones who helps line his pockets.

Hurd may be sour grapes.

The rest paint a picture of a guy with questionable character. And these kind of stories followed Jones from Cincinnati.

This Helm story has been around a while was being talked about in the recruiting forum threads as recently as last week. It's not a new one.

I respect people who don't make it easy and demand excellence. I don't respect degrading people.

I agree with this, you can tell me I need to pick it up, you can tell me that I need to get better, but as soon as you start calling me names and belittling me I am done with you.

Because surely everyone who gets treated poorly or unfairly and speaks up is just a sour grape. Sometimes that might be true, but just as often it's the truth coming to light.

I've walked out in those situations. If you treat people like people, they will respect you more.

I’d say writing that out on paper in front of teammates wasn’t easy. If it breaks University rules or any criminal or civil law then it should be brought before council or a judge and dealt with. Otherwise, seems pretty tame compared to what else is out there in the world.

This may be the way Butch demanded excellence. Obviously it didn’t work. Problem solved.

If it was just Hurd or Williams, it could be blown off as sour grapes.

A lot of those issues were more than playing time or not getting along with a coach though.

Degrading people is one of the worst ways to lead.

Crowder

Kendrick

Bowles

Helms

Hurd

Davis

6 different instances of Jones being reported as displaying questionable moral character that have all been out there for awhile.

Took a pot shot at Mays last week after the decommitment through the press.

Chose to bail on his seniors the last two games when he had the option to "own" his mistakes.

Jones won't get an outpouring of empathy from me.

Preach.

People need to get over this notion that Butch is a "good guy". He's an a-hole who treats people badly. That's not a good look for anyone, especially for a coach who simply doesn't have the coaching skills to back any of that crap up.

I’m aware of some of the Helm situatuation and hope what transpired with many people will come out. First off, Helm was just as disgusted about what was happening to others as he was to himself. Butch recruited him hard portraying to be a strong Christian man, discussing bible verses and etc.. He was a fraud from the get go. Daniel left because he had lost all respect for Jones and couldn’t stand the sight of him. Butch is fortunate one of these young men did not hurt that little weasel.

What’s more disappointing is the many so called men (coaches, administration, staff) who sat by and watched this happen to kids.. The administration was made very much aware of what was going on. I’m sure more will come out..

I will also say being a part of the Vol experience meant so much to Helm and these other kids. To walk away away from that was a big deal. Vic Wharton was living his dream!
