Daniel Helm

The big thing with Helm is that he grew up in a strict religious household that didn't use profanity. Helm was an excellent student (hello ... he's at Duke now) and very professional and well-spoken young man. Butch knew this and that's why he did it. And if you think there weren't dozens of players and assistants who were treated like absolute crap throughout Butch's time here, you're wrong.

And if anyone actually thinks that Swain, a former player, VFL and member of the media, doesn't know pretty much every single inside facet of what went on with Butch, you are delusional AF.

Like I said, Butch isn't a good person. That notion that he's some great guy should've been dead after the Drae Bowles saga.

Degrading a proud young man in front of his teammates, brothers, and friends is about the worst possible way to lead. Imagine if you were an 18 year old kid having just came to the school you've always dreamed of playing for, quickly becoming friends/brothers with your teammates and your coach publicly does this to you. Imagine the shame and embarrassment.

I genuinely feel sorry for the kid and don't blame him for transferring.

A proud young man... blah blah blah..... he should have told Butch "no"

Cowards, thats the context.

Cowards for getting the truth out about this guy? The team’s play on the field the last 2 years, all the players leaving, other rumors, etc.....all these things have told us there’s something up in the facility with Jones.

Swain has told his audience for a very long time that there were issues, that when the trigger was pulled on Jones, that he would share a lot of the things that he’s known for a long time. Not sure how that squares with being a coward.

I’m aware of some of the Helm situatuation and hope what transpired with many people will come out. First off, Helm was just as disgusted about what was happening to others as he was to himself. Butch recruited him hard portraying to be a strong Christian man, discussing bible verses and etc.. He was a fraud from the get go. Daniel left because he had lost all respect for Jones and couldn’t stand the sight of him. Butch is fortunate one of these young men did not hurt that little weasel.

What’s more disappointing is the many so called men (coaches, administration, staff) who sat by and watched this happen to kids.. The administration was made very much aware of what was going on. I’m sure more will come out..

I will also say being a part of the Vol experience meant so much to Helm and these other kids. To walk away away from that was a big deal. Vic Wharton was living his dream!

Excellent first post!

As Basilio said, Butch should be glad he didn't get his ass beaten at some point during his stay here, whether by a player or by a parent. He certainly had it coming to him most of his time here.

If Helm wrote it down then he is a p***y..... it might have been a test.

I can almost buy this. Granted, it is a poor way to get a player to find his own voice. I have seen people do this sort of thing. If it is the real back story then the problem is that you are taking a young inexperienced player, that is supposed to respect his coach, and asking him to buck the system. Typically this would never be a good idea unless you have an incredibly solid performer with a huge amount of self confidence. It would be used solely to put him in a position as a leader for the entire team.

What the hell is your problem? How many times did you tell your coach 'no"? The answers is never. Doesn't work that way especially at the college level. How are you trying to blame the victim here?

I'm not blaming anyone, but calling a player or making a player put in writing they're a p***y is far from a criminal offense. You guys are acting as if he violated him with a broom handle.

I agree, but out of spite I'd have told him no and dealt with the consequences

Some folks have considered Butch to be shady for awhile. It wasn't accepted much, even on this board. "He is not shady, he's doing what's best for the program". I'd think some might see they were very naive.

Lots of examples of lying. Telling kids what they wanted to hear. Butch is going out as he should. He's going out looking like a chump.

Maybe helm was a pusssy... Ever think of that?

Fantastic player development strategy by Jones then.

Jones thought “how do I get my highly rated TE to play better? Oh, I know, I got it....I’ll make him stand up in front of the team and declare himself a *****. Yeah, that’s it, that’ll do it .....”

Excellent first post!

While I have lurked for some time, I felt compelled to respond to the Antone thread then decided not to... I do know Antone was a champ and tried his best to mentor these kids and inform others. Hopefully when the dust settles the administration will reach out to him...

It's only what best for the program when the program is winning.

I've said something similar. Butch could be shady if the product on the field allowed for it. Butch acted like Saban, he just coached like Dooley. Recipe for disaster. I've always felt his ways would be his downfall. He just wasn't a good enough coach to do people like he does and get away with it. I'd have fired him last year.

I also know that while Butch called Helm a p*** in front of the team, Helm never stood up and said I am a p** nor did he write it... When bullied to speak, a “yes sir” was the response...

This is the time when those of you who've spent the last year or two insulting your fellow fans because they were over Butch get to have your noses rubbed in it. If you don't like it, the Bama fan bandwagon is still open.

If that’s your desire, I have a feeling you’re not going to be very happy. But you’re used to that.
