Dan Mullen thread (merged)

What disappoints me is that when they lost their starting quarterback the only backup plan they had was a walk on freshman that made their team one-dimensional. Coach Jones allowed that to happen twice to force the Redshirt to be pulled off of Joshua Dobbs and again this year pulling the red shirt off of will McBride. Sound coaching dictates that you shouldn't have a team that relies so heavily on one player that even though you're clearly more talented than the other team that you would lose if you lost that player. I have seen a lot of the same mistakes that Coach Jones made in coach Mullen tonight and I would be worried that he would make the same mistakes if he came to Tennessee.

I would like to be the first to officially congratulate Dan Mullen on his 5th place finish in the SEC West. Great program building in year 9. #HailState

Congratulations to Mullen’s Mississippi State for going 1 and 3 in the last four years against Ole Miss. I’m so excited to to think you could be in Knoxville next year NOT!

Mississippi State doesn’t have the resources or tradition that Tennessee have. Mullen will be able to come in a do more with more. He’s just what we need. Someone who can add another 5 years of mediocre football.

He’ll go 0 for forever against Alabama here. We don’t care about our rivalry game.

Tonight's disaster at MSU probably won't change any opinions. Some people will take this as evidence that he's not a great coach. Some will continue to make excuses.

Mullen should not be in our top ten... Especially for the money that he would require. Mediocrity should not cost a fortune.

For all those pushing for him, here’s a stat for you and I think had Butch been here nine seasons it would be no different:

If you take away Kentucky who Mullen is 8-1 against, he is 25-38 in sec.

And... In those nine seasons he has played a total of two schools from a power five conference in the regular season outside the SEC.

What's the last MSU coach's SEC record?

Butch can't win a game in the Least. No comparison.

He's inconsistent. You could debate that it's hard to be consistent at Miss St.. Looks great one week, gets beat by a team he should beat the next. Sounds familiar. There would absolutely be no excitement in hiring Mullen. We just ran a back to back 9 win coach. I can't see Mullen being much if any better than that even if the product looked better on the field.

What's the last MSU coach's SEC record?

Sylvester Croom and Jackie Sherrill were the last two prior to Dan Mullen. Might be worthwhile comparing the three:

Jackie went 43-59-1 (42.2% win rate) in SEC play. One division title in 13 seasons. Best season was 10-2.

Sylvester went 10-30 (25%). No division titles in 5 seasons. Best season was 8-5.

Dan has gone 33-39 (45.8%) so far in SEC play. No division titles in 9 seasons. Best season 10-3.

So it would be reasonable to conclude that Dan is a better coach than Sylvester, and about the same as Jackie.

That's not a glowing endorsement, but it is what it is.

You know you can’t bring truth and facts in here. Those stats apparently equate to a .800 winning pct at UT.

Yep. :)

Someone is going to say, "but Mullen has the misfortune of coaching during the Saban era at Bama; you can't count a lack of division titles against him because of that.

But...

...don't we want a coach who can whup Saban's butt, at least half the time? Isn't that our first and foremost goal each season, SEC championships?

So excusing Mullen for not having any division titles in nine years is also condemning him from a Tennesee coaching search, because he can't do what we need to get done.

Right?

No, we just ran a coach who went winless in the SEC this season.

Definitely not a Mullen advocate, but I doubt that guy exists right now.

More than likely the rest of SEC will be on the outside looking in for the most part as long as Saban is at bama.

Maybe we can get a coach to prove me wrong. That ain't Mullen though.

We can. He's coming.

Saban's not unbeatable...he has just been living large in an SEC without any other coaches who can match him. But they exist. And we're getting one of them.

Will be announced in the next 5 days, maybe as soon as Sunday.
